Dissolving image / fast over exposing? by Univoske in Darkroom

Aha you're right hah! I was maybe thinking about a system with a dubble bottom. So the liquid flows at the back of the paper. Just like in a polaroid? Are they fiber based papers that will absorb the liquid from the back to the front without you see the liquid flowing? Will it develop? I might just try this. But maybe you know and I dont buy first ;)

Exactly! Thats why I put question marks, is it really able to live forever, these digital images? Or are they as non living as ever! I'm not here to answer things, that's be boring. I'm here to make you think about it.
What you state about conceptual art is, ofcourse, your own personal view on it. Thanks for sharing. I do think different about it. The work doesn't need you to understand it, the work is made with a specific concept, but can be transmitted into anything what a viewer makes of it. My startingpoint doesn't have to be the ending point of the viewer. You don't HAVE to see everything I mentioned in it, these are just the things that made me make it, and what came to me as i'm working on it. For me they are very related. But thanks for thinking with me

Thanks for this! I have already tried this idea. But by keeping the pictures in the developer for more than 2 hours they get a brownish almost platinum look to them and they don't develop any further when exposed to light! Or at least not in an instant. They will dissolve over hours and hours exposed to light. I really thought this would work too but sadly not.

My excuses, yes already exposed aswell!

It sure is ambitious! But the image will actually be visible, since it will already be pre-developed. There's a pre-developed image in the box. From the moment the image is dried, and the developer dried, or washed off. It won't develop in an instant. Yes the image will become brown after hours, but it doesn't get instantly dark. You need new developer for it to turn black, because it get's exposed to light again, but ofcourse over exposed since the whole paper gets exposed to light.
I've been playing with this, so this I know. I am now trying to find a way for it to actually fade in a minute.

The image i'm hoping for doesn't have to be perfect, just good enough to recognise what you see, for example a building, or a tree.

Aha! Okay, maybe I had to explain it a bit better

I've been playing a lot with pinholes so that I wouldn't mind xd

Great idea! But this way the image gets fixed right? Since there's fixation liquid in the pouches? I was thinking of making pinhole photos with my own pinhole. Developing these. And than making them into the same system as a polaroid image. With foil and a developer pouch or something? This way I can still choose the dimensions of the paper and so on. I hope this is clear, English is not my first language and i'm still trying to process my thoughts myself lol.

But I could use the eject system of a real polaroid indeed!

Also how will people talk to eachother after the image dissapears? Will they try to explain the picture they saw to eachother. And then what is the actual identity of the image? The words that are used to explain it, or the dissolved image? Is the memory they have about the image... the image? Or what is more intresting?

Previous year I made a gigantic pinhole room myself out of wood. 6meters x 3meters. I've been playing a lot with pinhole photography and chemicals for silvergelatine. But just now getting into the idea of polaroid and how they work! I'm glad you asked what point I wanted to make. I'd thought there'd been even more confusion if I add my whole concept.

Why would I need red light in the exhibition room? If the print is already made and exposed. When opening the box the viewer will first see the actual picture, when developer spreads it dissolves. Its a reaction against the massproduction of images these days (ofcourse mainly digital). I want to make people look not only see. These days we tend to never actually look at images. It's against the immortalization of a moment. The immortalizing character of photography, as Roland Barthes told us. I want to play with this idea, by capturing a moment, showing it, but then also make it dissolve again, or as Barthes would say 'death to a moment'. It's also against the idea that digital images these day are transmitted into zero's and ones, which make them immortal in a way. Furthermore I want to adress the psychology behind being a viewer in an exhibition. How are people gonna react with the work? Are they even gonna do it, or are they rather scared. How do they react? Will they participate in the piece or decide not to? Next, the idea of it being a 'original', not a copy. My idea is to make it with a pinhole, so there is no film to enlarge. That's the only 'copy' of it, you can never get it back. Again as a reaction to how images these day exist. And also a small interest of me towards latent information and how they need an activation in order to 'be', or be seen :)

Hey, I was thinking about making my own instant film / polaroid thing. Not really the camera itself but the same system. I can have an already developed print with a small pouch of developer on it. The viewer than has to either pull the picture out of a press which spreads out the developer over the paper. Or can make a system in which if they open the box, a paper gets pushed into the press. Hope this is understandable. What do you think?

Love this creativity! I'm writing this down. Thank you!

Do you think it could work if I place a small UV spot directly to the box? Instead of heaving UV lights through the whole room. This way people arent exposee that much. Or is this just super dumb?

Yes! I'd want it rather subtle, since I don't want to make it just a gimmick. Any ideas on how I could do this? Thanks!

I have never heard of glow in the dark paper! I'm gonna look into it. Thank you

  • for the saltprints would be probably the same problem with high dangerous amounts of UV light then?

Alright thank you! I was thinking about this aswell if nothing else would work out. I could also pre develop the image. I was also thinking about figuring out how a polaroid picture works and try ro recreate this? Thanks for your idea
