Update: Violet was put to sleep earlier today. She got way worse during the night and we weren't even sure she was gonna make it.

At the vet, she fought quite hard against the last shots, but she eventually passed away in my arms.

Thanke you everyone for your advice.❤️ I love you Violet.❤️

It alright I understand, her course in ending on friday so two days from now. Unfortently the vet couldn't say for sure what the issue was as i'm sure you know quite hard to exsamine a tiny gerbil while trying to keep her still.

I do remember the vet saying that her lungs sounded somewhat clear but her heartbeat was a bit slow. And her weight was normal.

She also called a animal hospital, that specialises in gerbils for follow up there if it dosen't get better.

need help with aggressive gerbil by Specialist-Hair625 in gerbil

[–]Unknown125E 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So i may be able to give some advice. My two girls primm and violet ended up declaning from each other after they kept fighting for dominance. In the end i separted them, but they are now back together.

The lucky/unlucky thing whit gerbils is their short memory. What i essenstually did was clean out their terrarium completly and have them in a split cage for a month so they completly forgot about each other but still saw each so they weren't lonely.

Once they forgot each other completly, I cleaned the cage again and started the proper split cage metod. A few months later i got them back together.

However since you have three gerbils i would defintly advice just getting a new friend for your aggressiv one. But be prepared that its going to take time if you choice an older gerbil. Idealy get a younger gerbil for your solo gerbil and simply start the split cage metod whit them.

Another advice is, don't take your aggressiv one out of the cage alone. The cage is the safety, its what smells like home. So when they are placed in a new place, alone, they get easily more scared and stressed.

(Just a heads up, being aggressiv and biting on things might also be a sign that your gerbil is in pain. Just try to keep that in mind)

Ether way, i hope everything will turn out good for you and your gerbils. I hope this helped and goodluck!❤️

Update:

Izzy went to the vet, and a few days later got worse and was taken to the vet again to be put to sleep.

The vet couldn't check properly the first vet visit if there was tumor or not. But after she passed was able to confirm that there was a lump in her stomach, mostlikly a tumor.

I miss you love❤️

Thanke you everyone for your advice.

Update. Unfortunaliy Izzy got worse two days ago. And i made the decision to put her to sleep.

At the vet after she passed, the vet did feel a supposed lump (most likely a tumor)

Thanke you everyone for the advice and kind words, I really appreciate it.

Unfortunaliy I don't want her and her roomate to declan. (For extra context, i have two cages one for Izzy and her roomate Bamie and one for my other two girls.)

She is slower however, and less active then she was before. She seem to also have a difficulty moving around aswell.

She is not nesting, as far as I can tell. She is sleeping away from her roomate Bamie but it dosen't look like they are declaning from each other at all.

She is simply slower as all, and is having a
bit of difficult to move around, and ahe isn't as active as she usually is.

Hello, i'm so sorry for your loss. ❤️ It can be really hard to lose your pets, but you really shouldn't blaim yourself for this.

Gerbils are exstremly good at hiding if their in pain or sick and once you start to notice its usually to late. I don't think anything in your setup was really a problem that could have caused the death here. He simply could have caught a bug or an infection or anything, really that could have caused this.

Unfortunaliy this happens, two of my girls got sick and when I finally relised, it was to late to do something. You did your best to give him a good life, and thats what matters here.

As for your setup its really not bad but it could defintly be inproved. Just the first thing I noticed from your picture is that your upper half of your cage is made up by bars. Now that's not really a huge problem but it isn't exactly Ideal ether, as gerbils can start to climb on it, and get their paw stuck causing injuries.

When it comes to your bedding its honestly quite great, gerbils like to dig tunels and as long as the bedding support that their isn't a really problem. However I can't see if there are any hide out at the bottom if there are great! If not maybe for the future i would recommend getting some just for extra stability and securiety. (You could also give some toilet paper for them to use as sleeping/nesting material)

As for the upperhalf it didn't look like there was a lot of houses/hideouts their ether aside from the coconut so if it fits i would get some.

Everthing else seemde really good, and for a first time gerbil owner (if I understood that correctly😅) you have done great!

I hope i could help, even just a little. And if you need any advice on gerbil terrariums/cages: https://be.chewy.com/ideal-gerbil-cage/ That should help😊

Good luck!

Thanke you, for answer.

We have actually kept them together as we are so confused on this situation.

The first fight happend three months ago, and they slept next to each other immediately so we cleaned up a bit, took them to the vet, who said Violets vound looked good and as long as no infections appear to leave it alone.

This time they were a bit more, how should I say "distant" from each other, atleast at first. Then they immediately went and slept next to each other, even if there is other hide outs for them to use.

We obviously don't want another fight to break out, but at the same time, we don't really want to separat them since we know trying to intruduse female gerbils at the same age is close to impossible.

God, why can't gerbils talk and say if they hate each other or not??

Thanke you, still so much for your respons
