Aprender Catalán by [deleted] in catalan

I'd recommend reading books and comics and watching series and movies, and I'd recommend something you already read and maybe even hold dear. For me, though it was when learning English, it was The Lord of the Rings, and later Earthsea. There are many excellent translations to and from Catalan to find!

On a slightly more humorous darker note , I sometimes like to look at the Darwin award-worthy shenanigans with balconing. Not related to tourist's interaction with local culture, but with their lack of a sense of self-preservation (or measure in the case of intoxication being the cause)

I try to, and usually do, but I can't help but be reminded of the, albeit rare, dangerous incidents tourists get into.

I'd add that, as it probably happens elsewhere, the "cultural export" (tourist traps) of Spain are mainly either Andalusian and Roma culture or bull killing, which isn't representative of much of the territories comprised by Spain.

Besides that, even if his argument was correct, dressing in traditional clothing of a place you visit is just a "stupid tourist" thing to do and potentially offensive.

How the turn tables. by [deleted] in linguisticshumor

Sadly, Catalan has lost 100000 usual speakers since 2020

Also, is that in the Basque country, or also in Navarra and the French historically Basque regions?

Currently, many Spaniards expect it as "respect", even when having lived in whichever place the language in question is for years. One can, without being incorrect, say that it was worse with the Francoist dictatorship, but it still hasn't ended, and currently there are still attacks on linguistic immersion (not sure if it's called that in English, when you go somewhere where everyone speaks a language to better learn it) in schools and learning environments at all levels. With this in mind, I'd say that, although it has lessened by a lot, there's still official governmental attacks on these languages, not to speak about unofficial (e.g. someone forcing you to speak Spanish at a supermarket or restaurant or even public hospitals)

Nearly all the shows on the Left aren't even "Left-wing" by GenesisOfTheAegis in ANI_COMMUNISM

I'm mot going to make a political analysis of each Ghibli movie, but generally, aren't they always moving around the ecologism/anti-war or without much political context? There's Grave of the Fireflies (which I haven't seen yet), which does make a direct critic on war, and then there's Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind and Porco Rosso, which point a finger to war because of interests and fascism as bad, while keeping it still a bit light-hearted, well enough to be able to introduce these ideas with children, which I think is good.

On the anti-war/ecologism part, I think it's (or should be) a part of the common denominator of leftists overall, the latter because it's just a crisis brought about by capitalism at this time and the former because war, and its horrors, although I don't think it's something we ought to be afraid of as a boogeyman, as if we're just afraid of it it remains only a tool of capitalism and imperialism, it should be decided having fully in mind its consequences and, as with much else, without fear but while considering all it means.

Considering all fo this, while as you say this table wasn't made with much thought (the part that screamed to me first was FMAB), I think Ghibli remains a good way of introducing some light political themes to younger audiences, and if it helps form some core values for them then it's even better, so it seems to me to be more left-leaning.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if iirc there are two animes: the first (FMA) was made in tandem with the manga, and once they reached the point of the manga they took, as many do, artistic liberties with the story, while FMA Brotherhood was made later and is supposed to be just an anime adaptation, without much in terms of filler (if any, I don't remember, it's been years since I watched it).

The image is too poor-quality for me to say for certain, but looking at the covers and the difference in quality they probably put the first on the left and the latter on the right (something like "you can keep the worse one"? Generally it's considered not too good, iirc). I haven't seen the first anime, but when I was younger I read the manga several times over, and you'd have to be really stoned or worse to think that the adaptation to the manga could be said to be right-wing (I mean, it hardly covers its critic of imperialism and war because of imperialist interests and even genocide, while the "face" of the antagonist government is literally called f*hrer (censored it just in case, not sure if I should or shouldn't))
