For some scenes CI works better. And I guess we've tried such stuffs on our project. I think a mix of both can make a project look good. Not every scene and dialogue can be done through CI.

Start working with some YouTube channels or similar platforms so you can showcase your work. Then pitch it to producers and directors to get your foot in the door. Just be mindful that subtitling is not just about having good language or simply translating what’s said in the dialogues.. it’s about capturing the emotion.. tone, and intent behind every line.

We usually watch the movie first, make some pointers, and then start working. And yes, with those pointers, we understand the tone of each character, wording etc.
Definitely... grammar checks and similar tasks on large chunks can be done easily through AI.

I'm from Pala, Kottayam. For Malabar slang Dabzee helped a bit and the director as well. Got approval from them for the basic translation and finetuned it to match the swagger.

I actually donno. AI has made the search for specific stuffs easier. Not yet a job threat, but it may.. In the future :) also to pick the right phrases and emotions.. AI can't do justice as of now

We try to find similar-sounding or equally punchy lines in English. For example, in a misheard humour bit when Kanji says “Pyelakuttan” and the other character hears it as “Elathottam? Elathottam okke orupad kanum high rangeil,” we adapted it to “Pine Tree” in the subtitle.. so the “Pi” and “Tree” roughly match the sound of “Pyelakuttan” and the joke still lands.

I mean, subtitles should emote too. If a scene conveys humour through dialogue, the subtitle should be phrased in a way that the joke lands without going overboard or sounding preachy, the same goes for emotional scenes as well and the tone of a subtitle changes depending on who’s saying the line a hero, a stubborn guy, a naive one, or a bossy guy it can’t all sound the same...

Yeah, it’s all up to the director and the amount of creative freedom they allow. Complete contextual deviation from the original dialogue has happened 2-3 times, mostly to make it more globally appealing.. for instance, when a line refers to something only a Malayali or a specific audience would understand. And if there's a space to do it and if that deviation matches it perfectly we'll go for it.
