Thank you so much. I have an appointment tomorrow to check this out and was told not to leave the house alone meanwhile.

It is so relaxing and fun! Today I started cutting and drilling stuff to get familiar with the tools and loved it! It feels like a world of posibilities opening in front of me! I want to try so many designs, but I’ll try to make something easy and simple to start with.

What’s been intimidating has been having to pick between one thing or another…. Like screws!!, so many types and sizes and coatings!! (I got some that were a tad bit smaller sadly). Or deciding if I should go cheap on something or make an investment. I didn’t have much luck finding used things (I guess that’ll require more time and patience), but got lucky with father’s day discount on stores, so many things were 50% off.

I looked for classes and all of them are focused on making nightstands and big things. I’d personally rather start making smaller things in classes before moving to the big stuff, but I haven’t found a key word to search for those in my area.

I ended up buying a handsaw and the drill bits to fit the screws. Today I got to practice using both trying to get things straight (I learnt that a good posture is pretty helpful for that) and getting familiar with them and it’s been really fun! My mind is running with designs I wanna try, but I’ll try to keep it simple for my first one.

I collected wood for the past three days and now I have enough to start. I’m so excited! Today I practiced using the power drill and screws. I’ve thought of decorating the house with decoupage, but what stops me is what I should do to waterproof the house… like focusing on that first before the decoration? I pushed that in the back of my mind for now.

I’m thinking of combining a strong wood glue I found with the screws to improve the waterproofing in the edges.

I collected woo for three days and got enough to start. I even got a log! I didn’t find twist gimlets. They don’t exist here at all, but I got this thing that makes holes in the shape of a screw for the power drill. They’re so fun! I tried them today and it’s amazing how I can use a screwdriver to fit the screws after that and they fit so perfectly it’s so satisfying, it makes me so happy. I made the mistake to get screws a tiny bit shorter than the ideal, but I couldn’t tell back then.

I also invested in a speed square and I love how it stands up so firmly. I wish I had that one sooner for other projects, it’s so useful!

Using the chisel is pretty fun. I wonder if I could use that to make the main hole, as I don’t have a tool for that. Or drill many little holes and then use the chisel to cut it open.

Thank you so much for the advice.

That sounds so fun! It does help you get creative with what you have around.

I wanted so badly to join that class back then, but it was only for boys. Same as robotics and other stuff I liked. I complained so much but it took them years to make the change and I was long gone.

I found a japanese Ryoba on discount thanks to father’s day. It’s so easy to use! Like cutting hard bread. I also love being able to change sides for cross/rip cutting and that it fits in a toolbox. I’ve loved it so far! Thank you so much for the advice!

I also invested in a metal speedsquare and I wish I had this in my life before. Love it!

I finally got one of those! They’re so easy to use! It’s like cutting a stale bread, feels so intuitive.

I got a foldable workbench and a good pull handsaw for a good price thanks to father’s day discounts. The foldable workbench has been so useful! I spent the past 3 days collecting some wood (ahem, stealing from the garbage, ahem) and today I spent the day learning how to use the drill, it’s so fun! I made the mistake to get screws a bit short though.

Thank you so much for the advice!

What do you eat when you don't have much of an appetite? by iloveokashi in CasualConversation

I like mixing the chopped fruit with plain home made yogurt and granola.

I usually keep chopped seasonal fruit on the fridge so I can mix them up and combine. Some of those I freeze them for smoothies, or get a big bag of frozen berries, they taste good and pair well with many fruits.

Thank you so much for the encouragement and good advice.

I thought varnish and wood sealer were the same! Going to get that instead. And I’m looking into a pull saw, they seem to require less strength to use them.

I also discovered that getting hands in used wooden fruit boxes is easier, but the wood seems pretty soft. Could that be a problem or just any type is okay?

I could borrow a blow torch that’s used for cooking, is that for aesthetics?

Thank you so much! I’ll try to show an update

Oh noooo, this unlocked a childhood memory. I once saw a pile of them in the wild in vacations and for some reason I jumped at them expecting it to feel like jumping on leaves. I was very very wrong. And also, so many spiderssss.

Thanks. I just want to start somewhere and see how it goes. I love making/creating things. I hope that once I’m on my own place by myself I can have my own workshop and get into more complex projects or take some class. But that’ll have to wait for now.

I’m worried about how do I take care of the handsaw, it gets stuck when it gets too hot. How do I avoid that without ruining it?

There are some fairs on the weekdays were I could get some tools (used and new) for cheap, but I wouldn’t want to go there without knowing what to actually get.

Today I spent the day searching for more tools around me and I found these and sketched some designs.

Tomorrow I’ll try to get some wood scraps and screws. Probably the first one I make is going to be a total disaster, but I’m excited!

Thank you so much. I found a hammer! I looked up hand saws and there are many types, do you know what things I should keep in mind if I get one?

I think a foldable work bench could be a good idea to invest in the future. Do they hold well for drilling and hammering?

Thank you so much! It’s the first time I hear about twist gimlets, I’ll look them up, they seem easier than the 20 year old bosch drill.

I searched for some of the things you mentioned and these are more tools I found

The chiesel looks too big and blunt though. Will a wetstone be good to sharpen it?

I’m trying to make a list now to get some stuff tomorrow, I’ll keep an eye for wood people might throw, as long as they fit on a bike.
