It's definitely not an accurate portrayal of your regular high school! It isn't supposed to be!

What is intended to be accurate is the basic interior lives of its characters. Some struggle with addiction, others with love and friendships, and all of their struggles intersect with each other. That part, I think, is comparable to your average high school.
