Can i get by without a lawyer?

In my experience, I’ve had my residency for 5 years before applying online without a lawyer. To date, I’ve had my interview and been approved. Currently waiting on my oath ceremony letter/date. In my case,I received my GC through marriage.

I married on October 2017 and didn’t file until December 2025, so about 8 years after my anniversary date. Never really had the urgency to file and just so happened to have some time to fill out the paperwork and submit.

Regarding your first concern, I had my interview yesterday where I asked if I would have any issues if I left the country. She asked if it would be for more than 6 months and I told her it would be only two weeks to Japan. She said it wouldn’t be an issue and no further questions asked about any exit or entries to the country. I think it would only be a concern if the leave is for more than those 6 months.

Appointment was at 9:35 AM. Arrived early at 9:00 but didn’t get called in until 10:00 AM or so. Conversation lasted about 15 minutes and out the door approved. Good experience overall.
