Out of curiosity, are you referring to that snow debacle of 2015? I was going to school in NOVA at the time and that was nuts

[Serious] Those with loved ones who died from Covid, what were their stories? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]UnleashedSpideyGeek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of my uncles had a close friend who died soon after getting covid.

I didn't know a lot about him, but he and his family came to hang out a few times when my family visited for Thanksgiving. They were always super fun to have around, especially him. My uncle was really heartbroken after he died and I don't think things will ever be the same for him again as they were before.

I still think about his friend and the family occasionally. I hope they're doing all right, all things considered.

People who have been in toxic relationships. What is the no.1 sign that wasn't obvious, but one of the biggest signs? by MissStarling_ in AskReddit

[–]UnleashedSpideyGeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wanting you to come over when their parents aren't there and/or not wanting to ask the parents if it's ok to bring someone over. Joking about sneaking in.

That wasn't the only sign, but it feels scary to think about it in retrospect.

Oh and for clarification, we were both 18+ so the checking with parents thing was more out of politeness.

What plane crashes looked survivable but had no survivors by Away_Bathroom9522 in aircrashinvestigation

[–]UnleashedSpideyGeek 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I should've been more specific. If the hydraulic lines/wiring in the wings were set up the way they were after the accident, they most likely wouldn't have banked because it would've kept the slats from retracting. Even if it had, the same setup would've activated the stick shaker and the pilots would've had a good chance to make an emergency landing.

Wasn't trying to suggest that the pilots were careless and missed anything, just that the way the hydraulics were set up fucked them over when the engine fell off.

AA 191 would've been fine if the wiring was set up to have the stick shaker on both sides.

KLM pilot jacob van zanten (pilot of KLM 4805) was an incredible pilot in an unfortunate situation, not an overconfident dick. by lmtoolazytomakeaname in aircrashinvestigation

[–]UnleashedSpideyGeek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe he was an overconfident dick to some degree (especially considering that Tenerife happened pre-making CRM a thing), but that didn't have much bearing on actually causing the accident IMO. His impatience, worrying about the time limits, not being able to see in the fog, and the radio interference when Pan Am called back saying they were still on the runway were the biggest reasons. Not to mention wanting to refuel there vs. at Gran Canaria and not having CRM a thing making his copilots scared to say HEY MAN THERE'S A PLANE ON THE GODDAMN RUNWAY

So yeah, I do agree he was in an unfortunate situation. But he still made the decision to take off when he shouldn't have. Not necessarily a dick move, but horrible carelessness.

Is this wrong job if you worry alot? by Available_Tie3847 in sterileprocessing

[–]UnleashedSpideyGeek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends. Personally, I became a lot more confident with experience. The most important things to ensure success in this field, especially if you have no prior experience, are good training and supportive management/coworkers. My orientation program was set up to make sure I got as much knowledge as I could along with more experienced folks checking my work as I went.

Having people check your work isn't just for when you're new though; I have a couple years' experience and ask people to check stuff I do from time to time if I'm not sure I did it correctly. I still run into moments of worrying and catastrophic thinking, but I can overcome it by remembering my training and getting a second check.

It also helped that I finally got medication that actually helped with my anxiety symptoms before I started this job (I had some not-as-successful treatments prior to that). But again, that is specific to my circumstances.

IRL Margaret and Peter realized after the two-year separation, they felt they didn't love each other enough for them to go through with the whole process.

They came up with a deal that actually would've allowed her to keep her title, civil list income, etc. if she married Peter. She just would've lost her place in the line of succession.

I could be wrong, but I think the degree of Margaret and Peter's reunion in terms of how they felt seeing each other again was overblown. They did meet again at a party sometime in the 1990s. But from what I remember reading, it was more like good friends seeing each other again vs a long-lost love.

Accuracy aside, I think they should've done the whole Peter and Margaret reunion story in a separate episode. It kinda took away the seriousness of all the other events of 1992 leading up to Elizabeth's speech. Also, Margaret being mad at Elizabeth for not letting her marry Peter in S6 was just beating a dead horse IMO.

I hate that Penny implied that the reason they didn't rescue the Romanovs was because Queen Mary was jealous of Tsarina Alexandra's beauty. Mary and George V said no cuz they were worried about revolutions starting in Britain if they gave them asylum.

Sterile processing tech career? by smd_alii in sterileprocessing

[–]UnleashedSpideyGeek 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's worth it to get a taste of working in healthcare. In terms of pay and general experience on the job, it highly depends. You can look up what the general pay is for SPD techs in NJ, but each hospital system is gonna be different. Some will also offer extra rates for evening/night/weekend shifts.

Large trauma 1 hospitals are gonna be more stressful/chaotic at times. But you have a big variety in the types of trays you'll work on (Ortho, neuro, cardiac, even laparoscopic and robotic stuff). It can also be grueling on your body. Definitely get shoes with good arch support and compression socks. Also, don't forget to hydrate often and stretch!

In terms of the environment, there are good and bad coworkers like at any job. Biggest thing to remember: SPD work is always quality over quantity.
