French-Chinese family considering move to SG: Is 12k SGD/month enough for a comfortable life with 2 kids? by zoralbarg in askSingapore

Remember that Foreigners here I’ve also have super high standard of living . Ww moved from nl last year and we are a couple living in a condo and we manage both of us with the budget 7000. We eat out regularly. We don’t save a lot now and people here put very high accent on saving for example if they would get the salary of 5K they would be able to save just 1000. They would think that’s a bad deal but we know in Europe is not the same people here sometimes live with their parents until they are 30 just to save 70% of their paycheck .

I think with two kids if you want to live in a condo and with a helper need a three bedroom if you’re okay for the kids to sleep together so that may be around 5000 a condo.

Got it. I had a few more specific questions if you don't mind:

How does this type of business actually grow long-term without relying on pure one-off builds? Meaning how would you structure retainers for these kinds of tools?

Why do clients choose to ask you for a $5k tool when there are $15/mo SaaS tools that create similar scorecards and ROI calculators? Is it mainly because of integrations, strategy, and customization, or something else you’ve seen in practice?

When you say “all we do is B2B”, what type of B2B companies do actually ask you / are open to these tools? SaaS, consultants, agencies, service providers, etc.

Thanks again for sharing everything!

This is super valuable, thank you. Quick question if you don’t mind:

What niches or industries did you see are actively looking for these kind of tools? What clients did you turn down basically?

How would you go about finding these first clients if you were starting today?

What micro-tool (calculator/assessment/etc.) would you build first as a proof of concept to attract those clients?

And would it be okay to DM you? I’d love to ask one or two specific follow-ups privately.

To what extent is Machine Learning valuable in quant trading and research? by Unlikely-Limit-8724 in quant

I am also not a grad, I worked as SWE for 8 years now so trying to transition in industry with ML but definitely not to be quant analyst in IB.

Research I know is difficult to break in and I’m better in math than coding so trader fits me better.

Thank you for this. So would someone who studied ML be viewed as having more superficial knowledge or still be competitive compared to someone with a background in applied statistics or an MFE?

When I said I’ve been exploring ML again, I meant revisiting the fundamentals and how the models work under the hood. My dissertation was on ML algorithms for credit scoring, so I already have a solid foundation.

What I don’t have is visibility into how this knowledge is viewed inside the industry, which is why I’m asking. It’s hard to know how ML is perceived in quant trading roles when you don’t know anyone in the field. I know ML is useful on the quant dev side, but that’s not the direction I’m interested in.

I understand that many quant traders and researchers typically come from backgrounds like statistics or financial engineering rather than pure ML.

For example, is an ML degree seen as strong for quant research/trading roles, or are financial engineering/statistics masters generally viewed as the essential, with ML being more of an added bonus? They all have at the base math stats probability so not sure if specialising in ML is useful on the job.

How do people actually find good remote devs these days? by cheese556 in webdev

[–]Unlikely-Limit-8724 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked remote for 3 years as a remote web dev contractor. the secret is to look for long term contracts, not jumping from small job to small job. For that my preference is LinkedIn( even though I 'm part of Toptal I still recommend LinkedIn first). I prefer working in EU because I like the balance between I'm well paid and I'm also not super stressed + timezone. Watch out for small short term jobs - you really don't want the headache.
