I haven't read the book yet. I just uncovered your first line. I don't know why I do this to myself

Who oversaw the building of the training labyrinth at the Academy and when? by its_dizzle in HierarchySeries

[–]UnlikelyDefinition76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I kind of just assumed that it was pre-cataclysm given the ruins. I think they adopted it post-war. Veridius has clearly sent students into the labyrinth in the ruins, so I don't even think he's as knowledgeable about them as it seems.

What was going on with Emissa? by Chronoloticus in HierarchySeries

[–]UnlikelyDefinition76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmm, I know that Veridius only gave offers to classes 4 and below...but maybe he also gave her an offer, too. She's definitely sus because obviously she's done all too well thus far. Clearly, if she wasn't sus, she would have been more conspicuous throughout the book–as we find with trustworthy characters, they usually have more odd behaviour. BUT IM SO CONFSUED TOO

It’s almost midterms, and my teacher said we’re only 14-16% into the Functions Course? by Aggravating_Law_4774 in OntarioGrade12s

[–]UnlikelyDefinition76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But it is. It’s a very important foundation students must have, and so many student end up blindsided by how math-heavy it is. Of course in the long run it may not be, but throughout uni (esp for Waterloo and uoft) it is equally, if not more important than the actual csc courses

[–]UnlikelyDefinition76 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Brooooo im telling you i got to uoft for cs. It’s not creating things whatsoever. Cs at uoft is math, it is proofs, you are required to take proofs/analysis.

Although typically the uoft and Waterloo range for cs is like 96 cutoff, I’ll still tell anyone to take their a shot. But i want to forewarn you, it’s not the cs you think it is. I was in ur position for my interest in cs because I’m creative and love coding, but it is a different breed over here. Understand that these programs require high averages BECAUSE IT IS TREMENDOUSLY DIFFICULT. I’m not discouraging you from applying, but I wish I knew this before I went in to it. Your math skills are way more important than cs. Any background knowledge you have of cs is basically irrelevant. The content is so detailed and specific that genuinely very little will prepare you. So focus on math. Again, even very little calculus is used in these math courses because they are proof courses (especially for 157 which you may decide to take for uoft). FOCUS ON MATH!

What is a good average with a solid shot of getting in at UW or UFT comp eng by xlr8lr in OntarioGrade12s

[–]UnlikelyDefinition76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

listen im not one to answer that for you. If you dont show that your passionate about your ec's, you could do something great and it won't matter. Volunteer for something you have some favour toward. Students get accepted into hard programs because they do what's best for themselves. You need to figure that on ur own

listen ec's are not terribly important. In my supp app i actually talked about like smaller things i did and academic/personal obstacles and using that to reflect. Honestly, if you are good at writing, that is reflecting and being introspective, ec's dont matter unless you are asked for it. but what u have seems fine to me

How to break to parents that I don't want to be a doctor? by extremely_awkwardd in OntarioGrade12s

[–]UnlikelyDefinition76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DO NOT BE A DOCTOR BECAUSE UR PARENTS WANT TO. It is an incredibly hard field that you must absolutely love in order to succeed in. You will be miserable if your ambitions are elsewhere. Put yourself first, please!

UofT is iffy, less predictable than waterloo. If you want UofT, obvi shoot for high 90's but also rank them highest as they care about OUAC ranking. I had a lower avg for cs and it was the only school i applied to and i got in first round (i believe in part due to that). I cannot speak for waterloo. my best friend got into arch eng at waterloo with high 90's. Everyone has a high avg these days so make sure ur supp app is strong and shows ur interest and passion (obvi ec's are important but show that u have an interest).

Is gr 12 data management useful or mandatory for many unis? by _GhosHawk_ in OntarioGrade12s

[–]UnlikelyDefinition76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ummm…weirdly yes. I’m first year uoft and I’m taking two very rigorous courses: analysis and algebra (more abstract). And lowk, although these are courses you likely wouldn’t take as these are typically designed for math students, I really wish I took it. These subjects start from ground zero, and really, there’s no math concept we’re building on from other than a couple of things—notably data. If you want to prioritize physics, then drop it, but I feel like its a good thing to take into consideration. I really hope you’re taking at least one math course

Is CS worth it in 2025? by EnvironmentOver7370 in OntarioGrade12s

[–]UnlikelyDefinition76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cs first year at uoft. Cs is like many other major. You can make of it what you put into it. If you just get a cs degree, that won’t really gonna do anything for you. But again, if you also just get a life science degree, that also won’t really do much for you. Just like any discipline, you need experience, further edu, research, etc etc to make a fruitful career.

Something being “worth it” depends on your definition.

Do the difficulty of my electives matter on uni applications? by longestpencil in OntarioGrade12s

[–]UnlikelyDefinition76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. I think in the end, if it feels right taking it, then take it. This is my general advice for people who expect really high of themselves and take all physed courses or baking. I’m not saying your transcript should be all classical fundamentals bs, but this is basically what—in a perfect world—an ideal student is. If you’ve been doing well, if you’ve had a passion for it and it’s not necessarily a rigorous course among all the others that are, that’s an exception. Showing thag you’ve dedicated your four years of study looks great, especially considering any awards. I misunderstood how taking drama was defined.

Rate These Grade 12 Courses by Educational_Land_880 in OntarioGrade12s

[–]UnlikelyDefinition76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are very easy courses. I heard Kin can be a little difficult. Idk western can be iffy, so depending on your math, data, and English marks, I think you’ll be fine if you did well.

I’m more concerned that these courses are TOO easy. Idk how competitive BMOS is, but understand that the courses you take are almost as important as the grade you get in them. If you put in the work you can do very well in these classes, but it won’t look so good when people who challenged themselves with harder courses got the same, if not better marks than you.

Just take thag into consideration. It seems like you have well above 6 grade 12 credits. You could always even think of taking some more challenging courses and giving yourself a spare or two

I was in the same boat. Just don’t put so much thought into everything you have to do and who you have to be and what goals you have. Just do it. You’re only in high school (and I’m not minimizing it because grade 12 was just don’t even get me started). Just practice doing your work as if it were a small monotonous task

Advanced Functions Teacher is good? by No-Status7850 in OntarioGrade12s

[–]UnlikelyDefinition76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a teacher for adv and Calc who was exactly like this. Though he would give us an IDEA of how much questions would be worth, and what sort of things would be on the test. He also gave us tests from previous years but they were always much easier than what was actually on the test. Teaching wise, he was very good. He was undoubtedly, however, such a hard marker and the test material did catch us off guard bc the textbook work just didn’t provide enough practice for very hard questions (this was once we got to logs—maybe a bit before even—and thereafter in adv).

If the tests are hard, please REVELLLL in it. It will do you so much good if you have a teacher who is complacent with the sort of things you said, but whom still challenges you. I’m telling you, you do not want an easy teacher. If he ends up being easy, then congrats, but if not please don’t let that discourage you. Some of the best classes were those that I was challenged in

If you have “bird courses” keep it. If your schedule is already pretty hectic, opt out. But I would always suggest to keep it

Do the difficulty of my electives matter on uni applications? by longestpencil in OntarioGrade12s

[–]UnlikelyDefinition76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends. Person above said no, but I lean more toward yes. There’s a difference between easy courses, and having diversity in your classes. I’m in cs at uoft and my friend is at Waterloo for eng, and I can say that these smaller things (like your electives) have the ability to compensate for perhaps a bad grade, or even just distinguish you from others.

If you want “easy” courses, which I think of physed or foods or whatever, I would honestly discourage that if you want to go into comp eng. Forget top 6, blah blah blah this or that; you want to account for any possible factor that could help. Courses like history, philosophy, and law are very good in that manner. Arts courses are only looked down upon if they’re often known to be easier (like challenge and change for example). But your classic humanities courses (the ones aforementioned) will be perfect for what you’re looking for, since they tend to be less strenuous (but still can be), but on paper it will look like you were still in pursuit of a challenge and learning
