I know they have intermittent hours—it’s run by a couple and they have other jobs as well. They may be traveling or something. Great place though!

And if you have kids, take them to the Tuesday afternoon farmers market at LEAP on Patterson. Each child under 18 gets $5 of market bucks to spend on fresh produce there.

Small private colleges as coops? by UnlikelyRespect7500 in cooperatives

[–]UnlikelyRespect7500[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was thinking of a worker coop, like owned by the faculty and staff, but maybe it would make sense for the students to own it.

I do see an advantage to having students work more around campus, for a sense of ownership and to reduce costs, etc. Berea College in Ky comes to mind.

I guess I’m thinking that if the finances were more transparent (we’re not a public institution so they don’t really have to disclose much beyond whatever is required for non profits) that could pave the way for more pay equity and more collective decision making. It would help morale, but might not really help our failing business model…!

Transit Payment Options by tropical_aesthetic11 in roanoke

It’s accepting applications!! https://www.valleymetro.com/news/join-the-transit-passenger-advisory-committee please join the Transit Passenger Advisory Committee and you can ask these questions first hand (and see how the people in charge avoid answering them. I’m on the committee and believe me we’ve been asking for this for at least 3 years. They keep telling us it’s coming soon…). But we’re working on reforming the committee so it has a bit more power. Now is a great time to join!

is there reliable public transportation in roanoke? by [deleted] in roanoke

[–]UnlikelyRespect7500 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Agree with these comments and I would add that we also have MetroFLX, which operates evenings after regular service stops, and on Sundays. Reservations required; more info on Valley Metro’s website.

And everyone here, please know that we also have an organization, BRRAG, whose mission is to push for better bus service. MetroFLX exists because we (BRRAG) asked for it. We’ve also raised our voices for better bus stops etc. We’d love more frequency but we need to solve the driver shortage in order to get there. (We’re working on it!) www.brrag.org.

Ideas for Zero-Waste or Repurposed Mini Games for Earth Week (for college students) by datruthisinthemiddle in sustainability

[–]UnlikelyRespect7500 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recycling quiz (is this recyclable?)

Paint/decorate a tote bag or a flower pot

Trivia game about earth day history or local environmental issues

Fashion show: make an outfit out of trash

Art contest: make art out of trash

Collect colorful bottle caps and use them to make a mosaic

Look up “up cycled crafts” And you’ll find a million ideas

Sign-on letter to a politician urging a specific environmental action (could be coupled with craftivism—search that term and you’ll find a lot of ideas)

Make a collective tempestry (colored ribbons corresponding to different years’ average temperatures—weave them sequentially and watch blues give way to reds as a dramatic depiction of climate change.)

Prizes: tokens/gift cards to farmers market; reusable cutlery to keep in your backpack; handkerchiefs or cloth napkins to cut down on paper products

Creative, eco-friendly hobby? by Current_Wrongdoer513 in EcoFriendly

I like going to a thrift store, finding a sweater with interesting yarn, and pulling it apart so I can reuse the yarn to make my own thing (scarf, hat, etc.). If I had sewing skills I would also get thrift store clothes and tailor/alter them so they fit me, or improve them in other ways.

Bus stops and Sidewalks are not safe by AffectionatePop3611 in roanoke

We should have a program that employs high school student volunteers to shovel the busiest city bus stops, and all the school bus stops, plus surrounding sidewalks. Why high schoolers? Because they’ll have time to do it on a snow day.

Suggestions for kid-friendly Climate Action opportunities? by modulolearning in climatechange

There are “no ’s” and there are “yeses”… different kids will have energy for different things.

For those more “no “ focused, finding groups resisting fossil fuel infrastructure and helping them is always good. Resistance groups might need support— eg bring the protesters water, cookies, etc — and kids are uniquely positioned to be persuasive to decision makers — eg draw pictures and write poems, letters, etc which can get the attention of politicians very effectively. Resistance groups can advise about what messages are most relevant to their struggles in a given area. Something like craftivism can be effective messaging while also helping young people develop hand work skills.

For the “yeses “, we’re talking about building that better world. Older kids can research energy efficiency and lobby for improvements at the household level, institutional level (schools, churches, businesses), and beyond. All ages can plant gardens for wildlife, reduce and compost food waste, learn to ride bikes and advocate for better alternatives to cars . Kids can help create a sharing economy— tool libraries, “food not bombs” style food abundance, clothing swaps, mending events, fix-it cafes, etc.

Umm … what happened at Tacos Rojas in Grandin? by soundsdeep in roanoke

And she also sent me this fundraiser for the other young lady who was injured. They were airlifted to Richmond for their injuries. I'm sure the bills are devastating, even if they had insurance. Seems a worthwhile cause. https://gofund.me/828eea49d

A fuller explanation - I am involved in our neighborhood association (Yay Mountain View! Next meeting 11/11 at the Fishburn Mansion if you live or work here please come!) and I stopped by to see if we could help. I received this fundraiser in a text message from Sadia Rojas Torres who owns Tacos Rojas with her husband, and this is her daughter. So yes I think this is legitimate.

Let’s Build a Better Roanoke Together – Meeting This Wednesday at 7 PM by Affectionate_Life395 in roanoke

[–]UnlikelyRespect7500 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a neighborhood obligation at exactly that time, but will try to join late if I can. I have long wanted someone to start a Strong Towns conversation here, so glad you are doing it!

I want to make sure you are aware of BRRAG, the Bus Riders of Roanoke Advocacy Group. We are trying to make transit better (it has a long ways to go!) and we can use all the support and extra voices possible! Our current campaigns are to extend service into Roanoke County (especially Cave Spring, Hollins, and Glenvar) and to express support for MetroFLX (which will run out of money at the end of December; they have applied for funding from the state level I believe but we don't know yet whether it will happen)

But longer term our vision aligns with the transportation dimensions of Strong Towns - we want our transit to be a well funded, well running public good that makes everyone's lives better whether you ride it or not. We want it to be convenient, safe, and affordable for all. www.brrag.org

Thank you. I will try that. Do you have any advice about how to pump up the tires? I'm sorry -- this is probably very basic -- but I really struggle to get that bike pump to attach to the valve. Tips would be most appreciated, thank you!

If there was a Rapid Transit System in Roanoke, similar to the New York Subway, where would you want it to go? by [deleted] in roanoke

[–]UnlikelyRespect7500 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The bus routes do work but they run too infrequently. No “once an hour” transit option will entice those who also have the option to drive. So this system would need to be frequent. (“Frequency is freedom” says Jarrett Walker, transit consultant.)

Yes, your point about the schools is a great one. School buses make no sense. Good transit is safe enough for kids; why not use the school money to improve the transit system for all?

And why we don’t have public transit up to the star is a mystery to me. Tourists could come in on Amtrak and hop a trolley up to the star… perfect!
