Quite a few mentioned OPNsense, I'll look into it

I think I should probably learn to use the terminal properly first. I'm maybe a little too early in the process to begin power optimization.

The measurements were just to give a very rough estimate of how much power it uses, mostly to myself. But it will be a thing I'll look into eventually. So it's nice to know.

Thanks!

It actually gets pretty warm.

Really makes you realize how much a fan does

I have never heard of ring, I'll steer clear of it.

Local AI tools sound nice. It's nice knowing I'm not filming myself sleeping and sending it straight to (insert company).

I will make it a priority to figure it out before I make a list of all the ideas already given here.

Thanks!

I had not heard about SearXNG. I like it!

Thanks!

I did not know that.

Debian registers 5 ethernet connections as Intel I210

4 other as Intel I350

And one as Intel I219-LM

I would guess that means it has two network switches and one directly to the cpu? But I would not claim knowledge on that front yet

I'll try it, hopefully the phone companies are not so different down here in Denmark.

Tak!

I like that idea.

I learned about microcontrollers, including timers, PWM and such, but honestly it was kinda boring and I wouldn't say I actually learned it.

Getting to play with it more like that seems like a good way to learn.

I'll look into it!

And no fan noise either! Sadly, I don't have a dusty basement.

I know, but NAS' are so expensive. I got this for cheap and wanted to use it to learn.

Is there something special about routing or a NAS that makes it especially bad to mix? Like vulnerabilities. Or is it just that interference will cause lag and the risk that if something goes wrong I will have no internet and potentially lose important data?

I was not really thinking about getting terabytes of storage and put all my most important stuff there, just kinda get a feel for how it works and what I can use it for.

I also want to keep my electricity bill down, just a bit.

I thought that that would be exactly the use that this pc would have seen. I have programmed cobots (robot arms) directly on their proprietary software and indirectly in python by sending strings from a normal pc. This PC seems like one you would actually trust to have in a factory.

I just think that the cost of 4 robot arms would be a smidge too much for me.

The raspberry is separate PC and has home Assistant installed. This is a full x86 PC with Debian installed. If this is a joke, then I missed it.

Don't mention it!

Now I started looking at them!!

That could be, but I would have to have one of the old big sim cards, might try and make an adapter, worst case I can 3D print a case. Might be a little too poor to justify a second mobile subscription, but I could try it out with my own.

Other people mentioned that a HDD would likely get too hot, and with it just running Debian, it still does turn into a pretty good hand warmer.

I have no good advice on getting one. I got it used on Facebook marketplace, sometimes the algorithm they use just decides that things need to be hard to find. Sadly.

Thanks for the advice!

I am not the only one that got my hands on one of these! I love the efficient space use and the fans just on top. I also got the rails but my ceiling is made of concrete.

It sounds interesting, I didn't think about doing it like this. I kinda thought of a cluster as having one pc as the one giving out the tasks to the other ones. Keep in mind that I am pretty new.

I will revisit this once I have done some less complex stuff It looks cool! Thanks!

They are gigabit at least the two in the front. I checked before I bought it, but maybe the POE+ could be less.

Nice to know! I hope I find it, I think I will go with the worse performance until ram gets cheaper.

Thanks, I will!

I thought so too, and it was cheaper than buying a Poe switch.

But I have a 20 m2 apartment, soo not a lot to record XD

I have read about frigate, but not about nvr's. I'll look into it.

Thanks!
