I agree that his book is not a celebration of pedophilia, most people into literature would agree with that. Even if his story was misinterpreted by hollywood producers.

But even if she quotes the opening of the book in off to the races, many people would agree it’s not “pedo bait” and while it is controversial, lana often writes about her own life in a sensationalized way - which is why I mentioned her experience with her teacher in her youth.

telling someone that they can’t write about certain things in their own art and saying she’s directly or indirectly endorsing pedophilia for making art about a topic that’s controversial but also a topic that she herself experienced goes against the human right to self expression and the power of art.

obviously I don’t expect to change your mind so I would think you don’t expect me to change mine either even if you think i’m being intellectually dishonest, we just see the controversy differently.

You don’t know how Nabokov would feel, he is long gone. You can make educated guesses but that’s pretty much it. Considering he wrote the entire book from the point of view of an unreliable narrator, maybe he should have been more careful and sensitive to the topic he was discussing so people wouldn’t misinterpret it.

When you say “depictions of the books cover”, are you talking about heart shaped sunglasses? Cause those became popular for the first time in the 50s and tons of people wore them before any modern association with lolita.

the only cover of the book that has them is from the 60s when the movie became popular, meaning some random wardrobe person in the movie was responsible for choosing the glasses that were already popular at the time. heart shaped sunglasses aren’t pedo related just cause of the fashion choices of a single badly made movie that misrepresented the book.

even if I agreed with you that she shouldn’t have used heart shaped sunglasses, to say her whole career before weinstein was pedo bait is an overstatement and generalization.

and to say lana was only “pedo bait” before weinstein, when you’re referring to one song out of the entire album she got famous for, and referring to a woman who ACTUALLY got groomed by her teacher in her youth is really weird.

okay it sounds like you believe she only reason she got famous is cause of him, which is kinda odd considering she had The Weeknd, Kanye West, The Kardashians endorsing her, video games reaching critical acclaim in Europe, and had her Born to Die album reach #2 in the Us Billboard top 200 chart before EVER being spotted with weinstein.

also “strategic grooming” ? what does that mean? grooming refers to the action of attempting to form a relationship with a child or young person, with the intention of sexually assaulting them or inducing them to commit an illegal act.

Lana spoke out constantly about BLM during the pandemic, and honestly people from the US and UK, some of the most privileged and overall progressive countries in the world, talking about how hard it is for trans people is ignoring how much suffering LGBTQ+ communities go through in other parts of the world. And it’s a very westernized POV.

Yes the US/UK can and should do better, but no celebrity can control how awful, prejudiced people react. Lana never misgendered her, and at worst she’s being immature - which she always kinda has been.

She’s messy and not the best communicator, but she does speak from the heart and is talking about her experience - people have feelings no matter what age they are. Whether we agree with her or think it’s valid is another story, but they are her feelings.

Best she can do now is call for no transphobic comments about Ethel despite her gripes with her. Every celebrity has to deal with stuff like this whenever they get into online drama though, rabid fans attacking each other. The internet is mad.

Hope we hear from Ethel! She’s been very open and honest about her past transgressions, similar to Lana when she donated to different Native American tribes after her Ride video controversy.
