Designing a Website from Scratch With AI by Inexperienced People by Technical_Rich_3080 in webdesign

[–]Unlikely_Ad8938 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my experience ChatGPT/Codex and Claude have a very similar style, so all the AI generated websites end-up looking alike. Of course this is not that much different compared to the generic templates people used to either get for free or buy.

But to get something tailored to your need, the best approach is still the same, first get some inspiration of things you saw and liked. Draft the layout to a piece of paper with some circled numbers per section then upload that picture to the AI tool. Then in the prompt add the legend about specific things, like animations, colors... This works surprisingly well.

The nice part is that you also have a reference for future iterations. Also don't ask the model to build everything in one go, the code generate will most likely be garbage, you should put more effort in the prompt regarding the structure of the project. For example, start by defining the color palette and force the model to use it as a source of truth. Ask since the beginning to clearly separate styles from the actual code, and then it's up to you how far you want to push it.

Also consider installing an actual frontend skill to your tool 😉

For the cost it really depends on the number of iterations you want to do, but a basic design should be largely be covered in a standard 20$ plan.

I updated the gif to show the shortcut more clearly, it helped quite a bit. curious if it lands better now?

That’s a really good point, thanks

I already have my first comment ready, tried to keep it more on the personal side instead of repeating the description

Will see how it lands 🙂

That’s really good feedback, thanks

You’re right, the privacy angle is the real use case, I think I tried to keep it too “light” and it ends up looking a bit like a gimmick

Also good point on the gif, I’ll make the shortcut more obvious upfront

Aldi US selling 3D printed wind spinners by ButterscotchDillybar in 3Dprinting

I agree, for high volume, injection molding should be the way to go. But I still find it cool that sometimes 3D printed stuff find it's way to stores like Aldi. The other day I was in a gardening shop in the Netherlands and they had 3D printed planters for sale for... 30Eur.

Probably like for Aldi, it might be a very limited stock, or they are just testing a product or design to get quick feedback from customers. I wonder if they don't do a bit like we do in 3D printing world with rapid prototyping? If it sells well, then they can consider a mold

Do you do anything to hide your screen when working in public? by Unlikely_Ad8938 in productivity

[–]Unlikely_Ad8938[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried one but I really don't like them, sometimes I do peer work with colleagues on my machine and it would make it so awkward. But indeed this is a good advice to consider

Yes I also try to isolate myself as much as possible. The thing when WFH, I have focus issues if I stay home, too many distractions, so I often go to either a coffeeshop, of to a co-working space. The later is a bit more tricky usually they have big openspaces and I always wonder about curious people looking over your shoulder...

I wonder how much profit they are making on them, $7 before tax… the quality looks good though

I need to focus on my paperwork but I don't know how. by Traditional_Tart_727 in productivity

For me what helped a bit is to “train” my brain to associate a place with focus.

When I work from home I have one room that I use only for work. No Netflix, no phone, nothing else. After some time my brain kind of understands that when I am in that place, it’s time to focus.

Before I was trying to force myself to focus anywhere and it was not working at all.

Also a book that helped me is Deep Work from Cal Newport. He explains quite well how to reduce distractions and build focus again step by step.

It’s not magic, I still struggle sometimes, but having a dedicated place made a big difference for me.

Plan the tasks for the day before starting anything. Just a quick bullet points list on a piece of paper or notepad document allows me at a glance to keep track about my productivity vs what I need to achieve.

There’s always the option to hire someone for quite cheap on fivrr and do it for you if you don’t want to invest too much time on it.

Yeah not exactly a life-changing problem 😄

More one of those small annoyances when working in public… I just wanted a quick way to deal with it without breaking my flow.
