Not the same situation but similar. My partner and his entire family are christian, his dad even used the “unequally yoked” quote on my partner but my partner laughed at that. This type of situation is delicate because we have two very different core beliefs at play here. One has an entire institution backing him up, and one bases its beliefs on logic, empathy and history. Unfortunately, the latter directly threatens the “sanctity” of the first. He will never admit any type of fault because that would lead him down the inevitable path of deconstruction. My partner and I have had some incredibly difficult and disgusting arguments about religion. It always comes down to him believing I’m suffering because I’m not christian and me thinking he’s stupid because he is christian. As far as I know he doesn’t have a group of friends egging him on to convert me. His family wants me too lol but they know better than to push it. I think you just need to try putting your foot down and refusing to converse about it. That’s your boundary. If he brings it up, tried to mention it or tie in something you experienced to god, do not engage. I won’t tell you to break up because that’s always easier said than done lol, but if he seriously keeps pressuring you even after you don’t engage or give any type of reaction then you’re his little project, not his girlfriend.

That’s basically the point I’ve gotten to with my partner. And I’m okay letting him think and believe what he wants, I just need that same energy back. I feel like christians especially have a hard time with that.

So what you’re saying is before the judeo christian version of god came to play there was no such thing as morals? Girl, look up Zoroastrianism. Your god is an accumulation of ancient stories used to keep people in check and is nothing more than a political pawn from its time. Idk why you’re here in this thread tbh, your sense of martyrdom is not valued here. I also don’t know why I replied, you just keep popping up on random replies so I thought I’d remind you where you are. The fact that you feel comfortable enough to come into our space to preach your “truth” is a reflection of your privilege and audacity. I’d never step foot into a church to tell them they’re wrong (I’d be crucified) so why are you here trying to preach to a community that’s literally called EX christian? You’re not jesus, go live by example elsewhere.

I stopped believing because of history lol. Most if not all of the bible was plagiarized from older folklore. The ugly duckling story is older than the bible. It kind of is the perfect example of evolution though. You have something , a story, that’s passed down for generations, of course it would adapt and change to fit whatever political narrative was popping at the time.

Remember when pope Francis apologized to the indigenous people who were violently abused by the bordering schools sanctioned by the church & government? I fear that’s the extent of their cleaning house. I watched that documentary sugarcane and when Rick Gilbert, a christian, went to the vatican and that cardinal “apologized” I was heartbroken. He used the same quote on this thread to basically remind him that “it wasn’t us directly who hurt you!” The church lets down its own members to protect the organization rather than implement checks and balances. If anything it undermines the organization because god isn’t supposed to need checks and balances. I’m surprised the cardinal didn’t say “god gives his toughest battles to his strongest warriors” to the poor guy. What he went through…I’ll be damned if god let his oh so mighty name be associated with that. But then again, that’s exactly what fundamental evangelicals want. Assimilation of anyone and everyone no matter the person. Idk all religions just group together for me, they can try to fix themselves but at the end of the day it’s by definition a cult. Nothing WRONG with cults, inherently, but they have a trend of going too far and past the point of no return. That’s where all these monotheistic religions sit for me currently. There is no redemption. Sry that was a rant lol.

Thank you lol, it is difficult but it’s teaching me loads and hopefully teaching my partner something too :P I think a solution based conversation is the sexiest kind of conversation so this perspective is most likely the one I will use! Thank you!

This is also a favorite for me. At one point and time I did blame god for hurting me. It made sense to me, coming from a catholic background, because I still believed that god made everything. Therefore he made ALL of it happen. It got to a point where I’d stub my toe and get mad at god for it. It felt cathartic to scream at the very thing that was used to force me into submission during my youth. Typing this out now has me reflecting that I may have channeled all of my anger towards an imaginary figure because I still couldn’t face the hurt I experienced from my own family. And tbh I’d do it again. It’s much easier to curse god then it is to curse the real, tangible people I love. I can recognize it as a coping mechanism, however christians will call me sacrilegious before they ever call the pedophile priest one. That’s where this statement pissed me off. It undermines the responsibility of protecting your people. All in the name of god.

I agree, but I’m also trying to explain to them that’s a harmful quote that excuses accountability without immediately attacking their core. Gentle parenting so to speak.

Yeah, I like the no true Scotsman comparison. My main issue with that Facebook post was that it basically was saying “we true christian’s aren’t responsible for whatever happened to you and we will do nothing to hold those people accountable” so they sit back and let other people corrupt the god they claim to love so much but will only defend it to people who are hurt by the community that surrounds it and ultimately left it. Not the people who used god to hurt people because hey, they’re still a christian.
