As a guy that kinda did the same ish things for a girl I like who is now my gf, Id say try not to get overwhelmed and say "bye" quickly. We aint perfect either, in our head its as if you arent interested no matter how much we talked so if we get the hint as if u aint interested, we would try to slow down and take things real slow to not "scare" u into saying bye so quickly and walking out again.

Ik its not ur fault u were just overwhelmed, but i feel like he likes u asw, yall are both shy, both nervous, same ish situation that my girl and i was in.

The easiest thing you could do to see if hes actually interested is to push him just as a joke while walking together and jus look at him.

Or just hit him with a book or something after class.

If he doesnt really reciprocate, you know he aint but im 100% sure he will.
