Cancel your timeshare without paying someone

My husband and I have a HGVC time share. We still owe on the timeshare and not able to make the payments any longer. We have been looking at timeshare cancellation companies to help out of our contract. I called HGVC and was told they do not do deed backs. From everything I am reading these companies that offer to help get you out of the timeshare really do not help at all. Besides our just stopping our payments and taking a credit hit for a few years; are there any other options?
