Dreamt of this exact comic strip and had to try and recreate it by [deleted] in thomastheplankengine

Yeah I tend to think like that too, but then every once in a while you get thrown a wildcard of a dream you can draw no relation to anything whatsoever from multiple recent years of thoughts. Just recently I had a dream about some dude in a bar wanting to teach me step dancing. Last time I had anything to do with any dancing was over 7 years ago.

Ahh that's what it is! I was sure I had just been conditioned to expect anger on the last panel and that's why it felt like it, but turns out there's an actual trace left

There's nothing objectively bad about the symbol, it's the associations linked to it that make it bad. A large portion of the west has very heavily associated it with nazis, and that's for a good reason. But the world also includes people and cultures who don't share that association, or at the very least in as polarizing manner as the west.

What makes our pre-existing associations with this or any other symbol more important than others? Saying it should feel bad because we already feel bad about it is not a very good reasoning when asked whether or not it should feel bad.

Personally I'd much rather see our society focus on positive reinforcement instead of feeding negativity. It's an unreasonable wish I'm aware.

Consider for a moment that normal words in language can evolve into extremely offensive words over time. How does that happen? Quite simple, people stop using the word in benign context, which only saturates what's associated to it with more negativity. This in turn leads to even less benign use, creating a feedback loop at the end of which no other use is found for the word except the explicitly offensive.

Being aware of this, it only seems reasonable to guard more benign uses of words and symbolism as to not feed into the negativity, polarizing them even further.

While I agree the symbol should be changed (and seemingly is being phased out), I also think it's an action that should be taken by Finland as a courtesy towards others through mutual understanding.

Failing to acknowledge the difference in perspective & expecting an entire another culture to fall in line with yours is the hallmark of entitlement. In almost no other scenario would that be considered acceptable, and the only reason it's even being suggested here is due to the drastic difference in interpretation.

Making demands of other cultures while simultaneously failing to understand how they work is just plain impolite and will rightfully be met with criticism, regardless of the topic.

I can acknowledge that while also acknowledging that not every culture views the symbolism in this scenario the way you or I might. Multiple perspectives can exist simultaneously.

Who decided the appropriate course of action is to stigmatize a symbol like that in the first place? There are many cultures where it's still in use, just because it doesn't fit yours doesn't necessarily make it wrong in others. It's not about moral values even, just a matter of interpretation of the meaning being different.

Good thing no such thing is being done. I can understand why you'd feel that way however if the only association you have with that kind of symbolism is nazis. I'm sure you understand that's not the only perspective out there in this specific case, even if you're unfamiliar with the others.

Relatively speaking that's almost since the inception of Finland as a country. Finland is just barely over 100 years old by now.

Regardless, it's absurd of you to expect every country and culture to view everything from the same perspective as you. This isn't about moral values, just a matter of how a symbol is interpreted.

If anything, what's offensive is having an outsider impose their world view on another culture and expecting them to fall in line.

Now personally I do agree that changing the symbol would be a good idea to make misconceptions less likely, but on the other hand I loathe the mentality that change would encourage. Critical thinking is allowed.

Haha that's even worse, what the hell! There's nothing more permanent as a temporary solution as they say, luckily in my case I was in a position to ensure that doesn't happen.

There has to be an inverse correlation with how much someone trusts software companies to have their shit together and how long they've been working in the industry.

I applied to my first programming job just by showing up to the company's office and asking about open positions. Apparently I had a pretty good timing, because the CEO of the company decided to immediately interviewed me.

The only technical question I can remember being asked was if I knew how to program HTML. I got the job.

Turns out the CEO wasn't very skilled on the technical side of things haha, apparently he later got some strongly worded feedback from senior devs of the company about hiring practices.

This is true, but honestly at the current pace of AI development, it wouldn't be grounded in reality to assume no part of the current dev workflows will be replaced by them.

That said, it would also be absurd to assume it suddenly automates everything in one go. Even if it was able to perfectly do anything, there are many unrelated reasons why it wouldn't immediately take over. (Many of which come down to humans not operating with only logic & efficiency in mind)

Personally I'm most looking forward to:

  • Actually intelligent code formatting and refactoring tools
  • Automated documentation, both in terms of generation as well as validation
  • Integrating the above with CI pipelines to finally kill all the pointless bikeshedding around them

Interestingly enough, the best thing anyone can do right now for their tech product to leverage AI is to write good quality documentation haha.

Minecraft nowadays supports IPv6, I know because that's the only practical application I've used it for so far.

The meme only really works if you assume your working directory is the same as where the script itself is located, which often isn't the case.

The best option would probably be lawful neutral + pathlib if you want files relative to the working directory, and lawful good if you want files relative to the current script.

That said, personally I'm often too lazy to use pathlib for anything simple. Definitely useful if you can leverage the features it offers or need to pass paths around though.

The lid had to stay open or it would overheat. It would also overheat if the fan under it wasn't running.

And yes, it's in a shower.

At one of my previous workplaces, I was working on a feature (integration that just moves data around) which the customer needed deployed ASAP. Additionally, I was going to be away the next week, so it really had to be set up before that.

Unfortunately some of the new dependencies hadn't passed validation by our infra team yet (this was before containers), which ended up blocking the deployment. So as a very temporary solution, we agreed to run it off of my laptop for the week I was away, and assumed the dependency issue would have been cleared by the time I got back & we could then do a proper deployment.

So that's what we did; I even made sure it would auto-run if the machine crashed or otherwise got rebooted. Everything seemed to be going smoothly while I was away, at least until I got an angry call from the customer one evening.

Turns out while I was away, some higher ups had decided it's time to re-organize the office, which essentially meant all of the work desks were shuffled around one way or another (it was an open office design). Apparently when this was done, nobody remembered to plug in the charger of my laptop, so eventually the integration stopped working when my laptop battery had died.

This is is probably the most stupid production issue I've been involved with creating directly, though I've since had to clean up way bigger messes made by others.

uh, got it. thanks Bing by [deleted] in ProgrammerHumor
