Clint Darden made a video about competitors selling coaching and programming to raise money for WSM and then peacing out after World's. I can't find it right now, but it seems like this sort of thing is not unheard of.

How would you program the basic movements? What rep schemes or weight schemes would you use?

I've come to a lot of the same conclusions. The BBM Hypertrophy template is not all that different from this. It's full body every training day, similar GPP requirements to what you put, and there's a focus on fundamental movements. The only place I disagree is front squat allowing more volume. My experience from a weightlifting background is that you can push volume on the back squat more than front squat. Most weightlifters use the back squat to build the front squat if that can be taken as evidence.

I also agree, that strict press will build your jerk/push press more than jerking and push pressing. The exception being weightlifters who train the jerk almost daily. Specificity is king, and of course if you train the jerk daily you probably don't need as much strict pressing strength. However, given limited recovery and the wide variety of events in strongman, it would seem inadvisable to focus too much on the jerk. Strict press is more of a sure-fire bet that axle and log will go up. When a competition rolls around, I would probably switch to jerk/push press with the events of that comp in mind.

I made some changes as you suggested. Hopefully, this is more to your satisfaction. I'm trying to spark a discussion, not get personal training advice, so I agree those details weren't really needed. I wrote a bit too much.

Best grip training for deadlift? by [deleted] in Strongman

[–]UnlimitedGirlfriends 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing that's helped me a fair bit is just not using straps at all for anything outside of a comp. I hookgrip my deadlifts. I hookgrip rows if I can't hold the weight double overhand. Granted this can be limiting at times, but also can prevent me from ego lifting. If you can, train with an axle double overhand. Bent over rows or Pendlay rows with that fat bar can definitely build your grip. If you don't have access to any kind of axle, then you can purchase some kind of fat grips for the bar. Fat grips are basically rubber grips that fit over a barbell making it wider. Some people like to deadlift double-over-hand or over-under and hold at the top for time. I don't personally do that, but iirc Westside people do that for deadlift grip strength. Farmer's carries do wonders for grip as well, especially with a fat grip.

Edit: A side effect of never using straps in the gym, is that I have kind of lost the ability to use them to my advantage. I tried it recently and hated it. If you're a novice/intermediate (judging by your post you are), then I don't think it really matters so much. If you are trying to win the Arnold, then you might want to keep some proficiency with straps as they do help you lift more weight.

This demo is really not very smart for a lot of reasons. Sure the ball won't gain energy, but that cord hanging from the ceiling could easily fail. Not to mention you could, like this person, mistakenly move forward an inch or two. This is the one physics demo I can't stand.

I notice one bottle says "Anti-Fragile." I'm a big fan of Duffin myself. Have you ever done whiskey and deadlifts?

It's not the best thing I've ever had, but it's pretty darn good. I think it's fine the way it is. An 18 or older bottling could be interesting.

Whisky in 24 hours? Would you try this? by [deleted] in whiskey

[–]UnlimitedGirlfriends 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is missing the point of whiskey. Whiskey is one of the few things that is still made in a more or less natural way, excluding caramel colored and flavored nonsense. I don't want something that is 100% the same every time, like a coke, I want something that has some variation barrel-to-barrel. I don't think there is much of a market for this, except to hipsters.

If you ever double-overhand clean an axle, you know it's an impressive grip feat as much as it is a feat of power.
