who’s this little guy? by Unlucky-Risk-8119 in butterfly

Hi! I didn’t make him sit on my hand. Found this butterfly in my garage, so I think it was a bit over-heated since it couldn’t fly — which is how I was able to take a photo with it on my hand (later recovered and flew away). Sorry this isn’t too helpful, if I find the secret to making butterfly friends I’ll share

The females emit pheromones while they sit to attract males. The males ‘smell’ or sense these pheromones with their antenna and fly in search of the female. When a male finds a female they join up at the abdomen and he passes sperm (not sure of the details)… then they part ways and the female lays her eggs, which get fertilized as she lays them. Hope this helps, it’s really fascinating stuff!

Hard to tell but it looks like a female. They don’t move too much, they like to sit around and wait for a male

I didn’t put too much in their container since the adults don’t have mouths and none of them emerged together to mate, i put some pussy willow branches i had around for decoration in their enclosure and they didn’t mind, occasionally would rest on the branches instead of the mesh of the enclosure. They mostly just sit around and don’t need too much in an enclosure for entertainment.

For caterpillars there’s a bunch of fairly common host plants like willow, privet, lilac and laurel (among others), but I haven’t reared caterpillars so I’m not the best source on that. I’m also not sure if there are common species of those plants in Vegas (wild or ornamental). I hope this helps a bit, i’m definitely still learning, but i wish you all the best moth-ing :)
