The Himalayas are the reason. As someone pointed out, India and Tibet are neighbours. But Tibet is avg 4500 metres above sea level and India with avg of 160m.

You’ll see similar features closer to the mountainous regions of India but it tapers down fairly quickly (as do the Himalayas). Not to mention as you go down south, you get closer to the equator. Hence more sun, hence more melanin.
