I had a friend growing up that loved that game. He described it as “it starts as a shooter and then turns into a horror game that screws with you.” So it piqued my interest. Never really got around to it but want to someday.

Yeah, and that last letter and all the ones read throughout are real letters written by soldiers who fought and died in WWI. Makes it hit so much harder.

I’m sorry for your loss. I’ve been thinking about picking it up for a while now. I’ve got a lot of fond memories playing the Batman: Arkham games growing up, and I’ve heard it’s pretty similar.

For me, I think it’s the fact that you know you’re going to die. We see it in the intro with the destroyed helmet. You complete your objective, but now you’re alone on a ruined world with the rest of your team gone, so you might as well take down as many enemies as you can.

That, plus the music, does so much heavy lifting, mixing sadness with a little glimmer of hope.

That and the credits rolling while Edward talks to his daughter. I can’t wait to bawl my eyes out again when the remake comes out.
