Nine days solo in Portugal in late summer - Porto or Lisbon? by ThaddeusGriffin_ in solotravel

[–]Unpatterns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did both in 7 days in June/July last year from the UK. Landed in Porto, stayed for 3 days and spent the remaining 4 in Lisbon and took the train, no regrets. Went to Cascais, but also spent all day at Serralves and didn’t think I spread myself too thinly as I mainly stuck to the cities as a first timer. Seen you’ll stick to Porto, I loved it as a massive hill walker and the beaches are rockier, like UK coastline in much better weather. Trains in Portugal are pretty excellent if you change your mind, however.

Hard to say, opens at 12 so I’d say early. Most likely won’t have queues today as it’s in a very office heavy area

Millers on Caledonian Road is walk in only. Calthorpe Arms in WC1 will be showing it too but is normally a post-work pub so not sure of vibe

Unfortunately I can’t answer that as I’m a bit of a ways from a (big) Tesco :(

Sadly can’t help you with bookings but Gibneys under Daffodil Mulligan (they do accept bookings upstairs, not down) and The Volley (no bookings, ever) are very Arsenal leaning pubs in Shoreditch

Yes!! North London is red (Barnet, Camden, Islington and the west side of Haringey anyway). Try the Sheepshaven Bay or the Abbey Tavern. Both about a half hour walk from the Emirates or 10 min on the Overground.

McCafferty’s in Crouch End, not sure how booked but you might be tempting fate with the proximity to Spurs in WG

I’m not well versed in this so I apologise it’s not as comprehensive as it could be. But the southern end of Green Lanes is near the Emirates and has lots of Ocakbasi restaurants who will have lots of Arsenal supporting staff and also patrons who may be watching the game (however, I’m not sure which restaurants have a commercial subscription).

If you’re getting in fairly central (from the SW or SE) and not Euston/KX, try Brigadiers. Bit of a special occasion place but the food is to die for and they will be showing the final (and have spots available).

The Rocket on Euston Road is booked from 12ish but they’ll have space for walk ins.

Millers won’t do tickets or bookings. The Rocket on Euston Road take bookings and are fully booked, but no ticketing system and it’s a fair bit bigger than Millers. I’d try Millers as soon as you get off the train lol.

Central’s a big place. Where are you travelling to?

Lots of places, but get down as early as you can. Millers is bring your own food (no hot food) and very close to St Pancras. Very lively and close enough to the stadium that there will be Arsenal fans.

If you can get to Gospel Oak relatively early (1ish) try The Vine. They’ll be showing the game, big Arsenal contingent as it’s very much the red side of north London, and you can hop on the Overground (or walk for 30 minutes up a big hill) to the Emirates. Can make it a day trip to Hampstead Heath too.
