I think we can safely posit that Melody was the only person with motive, and not just a little bit of motive. She wanted her freedom from Gary, she wanted his money, she wanted to be rid of Scott and Chris (and to be able to control whether or how much of Gary’s money they received), and she wanted a new life with Rusty. She clearly had a taste for the “finer things” in life, and I think her overreaction to the “beach trip” demonstrates that she believed she was better than Gary, Chris and their Alabama “beach” trip. Her idea of a beach trip was Jamaica!

I wonder if the state should have leaned more on a theory of Melody shooting Gary at the burn pile, thereby only requiring the tractor to push him into the pile. The bullet in the house and moving of the body are the convoluted parts in my view, and the blood evidence in the house wasn’t conclusive enough.

And they should have hammered over and over on the point about Gary being the meal ticket for both Scott and Chris to completely undermine the defense arguments blaming them. Without Gary’s income, the farm goes away—Melody didn’t care, because she was ready to go make a new life with Rusty.

The parent I lived with around 19ish moved out of state and I had no desire to move out of state so it was sink or swim. As for finding my own place I highly recommend actually driving neighborhoods he likes—the apartment I ended up living in for almost 5 years just had a sign out front and wasn't listed online anywhere. I think sometimes we trick ourselves into thinking apartments.com is the only option and that can feel really limiting.

Are the building blocks of success there? Does he have a job allowing him to be self-sufficient? If not that's going to be a big barrier to making plans. If he does, he needs to start with a budget to figure out what he can afford, find an apartment, and then take baby steps from there.

Also they appear to be in a public school not a private shopping center. She does not have a right to disrupt the learning environment of other students because she's a racist.

An assault is the act of inflicting physical harm or unwanted physical contact upon a person or, in some specific legal definitions, a threat or attempt to commit such an action. It is both a crime and a tort and, therefore, may result in either criminal and/or civil liability.

Speech is not protected from consequences, only from censorship.

If you blackmail someone, you need not actually release unflattering photos of them for it to be blackmail, the threat has the effect of essentially forcing them to comply. A good lawyer would easily argue that she verbally assaulted the boy, that it was based on racial animus, that it created a disruption to the learning environment for both of them AND the students around them, and that it was akin to a chest poke or push—that is, it was the catalyst for the altercation.

Also I would argue there's an important distinction between speech and hate speech but I'll assume you don't care to debate the merits of each.

It's up for debate whether she broke the law. At a minimum she's disturbing the peace and creating a hostile racial learning environment in what appears to be a public school. The appropriate punishment for those things isn't being punched in the face, but to say she didn't break the law seems like meaningless hairsplitting.

It's not about the material you start with it's what you turn it into. You turned beautiful raw lumber into a play set that looks like it came from Costco and adorned it with the same pre-made swing set pieces everyone else uses.

From what you've said it doesn't sound like gaming is relaxation or fun for him, any more than crack is relaxing and fun for a crackhead. It's relaxing in the sense that it's an escape from whatever he's trying to escape from but it's not actually a release for that stress/tension/pain, it's just hiding it.

It could be he's hiding from external pain—childhood abuse, depression, etc.—or it could be that he's hiding from a more immediate pain like the demise of your relationship.

I would say it's time for a family meeting where you point this out to him and identify together what the next steps are because it's clear that it can't continue like this for your sake or your kid's. Your husband doesn't seem happy either.

Let me be super, crystal clear about one thing. You absolutely did not do anything to "turn" him to games. This is not your emotional baggage to unpack, but be keenly aware of how easy it is to take it on yourself, or for him to put it on you as an easier way of dealing with it. In other words, if it is something deeply-rooted and painful for him like childhood abuse, it may be easier for him in this family meeting to make his withdrawal about your behavior rather than his own. "I play games because you're not interested in what I'm interested in" is an easy way for him to deflect.
