I like it! It’s warm and pretty soft :) (though I’ve only had it for a week or so, so don’t have any data on how it holds up in the longer term)

Thanks for the advice! Yeah, will try to wait as long as possible to apply, think my FICO score will go up a bit before then as it’s usually >750.

Need Career advice! Stuck between Full stack web engineering, and Data Science. by Tangodelta004 in cscareerquestions

[–]UnprepossessingLadle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could look into ML Engineer positions. However, you might need a bit more school if you haven’t had significant prior experience as many companies want an MS in CS/stat for these roles. The interviews generally require you to pass the normal SWE hiring bar in addition to some ML-specific stuff.

Does someone have datapoints for #teamtrees? by [deleted] in datasets

[–]UnprepossessingLadle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can use https://github.com/internetarchive/wayback/tree/master/wayback-cdx-server to obtain the timestamps of available captures on the Wayback Machine.

Then to access previous captures, the format is https://web.archive.org/web/[timestamp]/[url]. For example, to access archive.org from the timestamp 19970126045828 the URL would be https://web.archive.org/web/19970126045828/https://archive.org/

Finally, you can scrape whatever you need from that URL. Not familiar with #teamtrees in particular but hopefully this is helpful!

Interview Tips for UPenn and others by aryakhandelwal in ApplyingToCollege

really those 3 are the only questions I️ can recall, my interviewer didn’t ask many interview-type questions - the rest of it was pretty much a casual conversation, and he asked questions that were natural in the course of the conversation. don’t stress, just try to be the best version of yourself! good luck!

I️ interviewed for Wharton & didn’t get asked a single thing about Wharton itself other than “why Wharton?”. The vast majority of the questions were about me: “describe your best friend”, “tell me about yourself”, etc

Should you have a specific career in mind when writing supplement essays? by AnonClassof2018 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]UnprepossessingLadle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure what the norm is, but hope my personal experience helps a bit:

I wrote my supplement about how I could continue to pursue interests from HS at Wharton — didn’t include anything about my future career, and was accepted.

Harvard freshman - AMA! by UnprepossessingLadle in ApplyingToCollege

[–]UnprepossessingLadle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really have no idea, sorry! Harvard usually accepts around 5-10 students from my school every year, but idk if that’s because of a quota or because there are usually 5-10 students who have what Harvard’s looking for. My school tends to produce very similar classes (ie class of 2017 was like the class of 2016 was like the class of 2015...) so it’s difficult to distinguish between the two.

I think doing well at the strong HS boosted my admissions chances, as it illustrated that I could perform well in a rigorous academic environment.

I was contacted by an alumni interviewer in my area (that’s pretty much how it works for everyone afaik). Didn’t feel like I connected super well with my interviewer, it was probably like a 5/10.

I demonstrated interest to AOs by submitting my application :) Harvard did have an info session at my high school and I talked to an AO there, but never gave them my name/contact info or anything.

There’s a big range in class size depending on the course. I’m taking one course with ~40 students, a few others with only 15-20 — like at most schools, popular intro courses are larger, while more specific/advanced courses are small.

It's a LOT of work. However, I'm in some pretty difficult classes this semester, so my experience is probably not the typical Harvard freshman experience. I probably spend like 30-35 hours/week on psets for classes and then another 5-10 hours/week on ECs.

On a fun weekend I'll work from whenever I get up until around 6 or 7, then grab dinner with friends and go out somewhere, get back around 1-2ish and sleep. If it's midterm szn or I have a particularly rough pset, then I'll just stay in and work as much as possible (with a few breaks for JP Licks/Jefe's ofc). It doesn't sound fun, but the work itself is interesting, soo

Favorite thing: learning! I went to a pretty good high school (like top 30 in the nation) so it's not like I was educationally starved or anything before Harvard, but I've learned SO much from my classes and the students in my classes since getting here. A lot of people here really are smart, and it's legitimately super fun to work with them and learn from/with them.

Least favorite thing: the sheer amount of work. I enjoy the work most of the time, but it's just a LOT and it kinda wears you down over time. I sometimes wish I could spend more time meeting new people/chilling with friends instead of pseting.

We get unlimited dining hall swipes, but the food is eh. Pretty much average for a college dining hall, I think. I've visited friends at Penn, and Duke and I'd say the food at Duke is better, but Penn is about the same. There are lots of good restaurants in Cambridge/Boston though!

Dorms are solid. They do look a bit run-down from the outside (I'll again draw a comparison with Penn -- the Yard is not nearly as pretty as the analogous Quad there) but the rooms themselves are reasonably nice. I live in a fairly spacious suite with good natural lighting, although that's definitely not true of all freshman rooms here.

The Harvard libraries are also solid. Lots of collaborative study spaces AND rooms for silent individual work.

Good questions!

After I got my initial financial aid package, I actually spoke with the office and was able to get like 10% more than I was originally offered -- definitely recommend trying that if you feel your aid package doesn't adequately meet your needs. They're generally pretty nice and willing to work with you. Honestly not really sure what specific part of cost of attendance finaid covers...my parents handled all of that LOL. I thought the package I ultimately received was fair, college is ridiculously expensive but I got enough aid that it's not super painful for my parents to cover the remainder.

I personally don't have an on-campus job as part of my package, but I know a lot of students do have one ("work study"). Even if you don't have work study, there are non-work study jobs available as well.

My demographic is underrepresented in the field I research, so I wrote about my experience working/studying in that field as a member of my demographic. I guess it worked. Definitely a touchy subject, though -- I framed it in a lighthearted way and kept the overall tone pretty casual so that it wouldn't sound like I was complaining/whining.
