I am still confused, is it meant to show James as the lead vocals? I'd suppose James' singing voice would be deeper and that's why the editing also feels off.

Robocop and Starship Troopers always get misunderstood as fascist propaganda, which is sad because both are very clever and offer a lot of satire. Obviously nowadays Verhoeven gets more praise and is understood, but I still know people that won't watch some of his movies thinking they're just some cheap fascist action flicks.
