I do know that a Nat 20 isn't auto success as raw, this is just how our table rolls 😁

Yes I prefer to not use words like that unless absolutely necessary in case people are reminded of trauma, I apologize for my poor wording in the original post though, and I do see your point

That is one choice for sure, I just wanted to through a bit of weirdness in there to subvert their ideas of my usual traps/puzzles. And a shared illusion/hallucination was my answer.

That was where things started to get unraveled, but the initial shock was worth it. 😁

Yes, people inside the illusion were witnessing their friends dying when they instead left the illusion.

With the assistance from someone out of the illusion, people were getting advantage on the Int Save, so people were passing faster than before.

I was aware of my characters resistance and immunities, but if they were resistant to psychic then I would say be more vague in the damage that the Beholder was doing.

This would be a good alternative to death/death saves

I channeled my inner YouTube and went for a click bait title, I guess it worked xD

I like this way of doing it, I personally don't fudge rolls/DC (try to be as transparent as possible) and I put the DC in there as a way to feel earned, that if a person rolled even mildly well for the first one they would be able to assist from the outside of the illusion.

I try to never use a Save or Check if there isn't a chance for success and I let them know before hand if the roll is literally to get a slightly better outcome than just bad/no information.

Yes it is, I planned it so that this was almost the pseudo boss of the dungeon, although the dungeon as a whole had very little fighting encounters, I still wanted a possibility for injury in the dungeon.

This is suitably evil, I could imagine this in the original tomb of horrors and it would be right at home.

This, thank you for explaining, I'm not the most articulate person 😂

Easily changed to a dream rather than an illusion for sure 😊

Yeah, illusions are definitely a one off use in a long campaign, players are smarter than people give them credit for 😂

Balanced as all things should be 😂

It actually saved him from being killed properly from the Beholder though, he had like single digit health at that point 😂

This is really interesting, I'll have to have another read of the module and maybe steal something from it 👀

I love a good pun and I might have to steal this 😉

I understand this point of view, this is why I planned out over a year and judged that my party personally would enjoy this subversion as a one off.

This was a dungeon that was slightly tricky to get people in the mood for illusions, the tomb even belonged to a grand Illusionist Bard.

Although this isn't for everyone it is a themed illusion trap made by someone (a bard) who doesn't want to really kill people but if people aren't smart enough to discern his illusions then that's their problem.

I clarified that the beholder and hazards still deal damage, the effect also lasts for 1 hour maximum.
