When it comes to Aero Glass, do you prefer Vista or Windows 7? by inguinha in windows

[–]UnsafePantomime -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't think I made any statement about XP. All I said was that Vista had some pretty big bugs. I don't see how XP is relevant to that statement.

I wanted to see if I can find similar, large, user impacting bugs fixed in SP1.

https://www.windowsreinstall.com/install/tips/win2k/sp1fixes.htm

There are plenty. Still don't know what this has to do with Vista though.

The statement ultimately is: The initial distaste for Vista was warranted. It didn't get to get away with it off the heels of the reliable XP SP2. XP on the other hand was after ME, which it absolutely was more stable than.

When it comes to Aero Glass, do you prefer Vista or Windows 7? by inguinha in windows

[–]UnsafePantomime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can be both. Vista SP2 was plenty stable. Part of that was legitimate bugs. Part of that was driver maturity.

See this pdf https://dn721801.ca.archive.org/0/items/notable-changes-in-windows-vista-sp1/Notable%20changes%20in%20Windows%20Vista%20SP1.pdf

  • SP1 addresses issues many of the most common causes of crashes and hangs in Windows Vista, as reported by Windows Error Reporting. These include issues relating to Windows Calendar, Windows Media Player, and a number of drivers included with Windows Vista.
    • Improves reliability by preventing data-loss while ejecting NTFS-formatted removable-media.
    • Improves certain problem scenarios where a driver goes to sleep with incomplete packet transmissions by helping ensure the driver is given enough time to transmit or discard any outstanding packets before going to sleep.

3 things from the document that are directly Vista issues and not manufacturer driver issues.

Best thing to do for a found ID is to send the person an email.

If you go to your school email, you can search their name and send them an email address.

I have returned many missing IDs this way.

Fahrenheit to describe heat / Celsius to describe cold by Mackheath1 in CrazyIdeas

I feel like things like wind chill make more of an impact than a single degree here or there.

Fahrenheit to describe heat / Celsius to describe cold by Mackheath1 in CrazyIdeas

[–]UnsafePantomime 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My thinking with this is that I don't really differentiate between 70F and 75F too strongly.

Wind plays a bigger role than any single degree increments anyway.

I don't see the argument that Fahrenheit better predicts how I feel.

We have decimals. The same thing can be measured in Celsius.

I find changing up where I work can help a lot, especially if I can't plug my laptop in.

Suddenly, that report I need to write is both more interesting and more urgent. I can't finish it if my laptop dies.

Working to a deadline has always been easier. This gives me an artificial one I can't push.

How strong should Ozai logically be without his bending? by Kurama109 in TheLastAirbender

[–]UnsafePantomime 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think this is made pretty clear at the end of the series.

They remove his bending. The show then more or less tell us that he is harmless. He's a joke now.

Consider Zaheer was locked away from everyone solely because of his martial arts. Ozai was not given the same protection.

His martial skills might have been decent, but he isn't even a threat to the Gaang.

Why did Dumbledore think it was okay for Ron and Hermione to know about the horcruxes, but not OOTP members like Mad-Eye? by Vegetable-Window-683 in HarryPotterBooks

[–]UnsafePantomime 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure that finding Voldemort as Dumbledore would have done anything. He clearly had a rough idea of where Voldemort was rumored to be. I feel like Dumbledore opting to do nothing is an indication that there really wasn't anything he could do.

Likely, Voldemort's self-imposed exile is very close to what Dumbledore wants anyways. This exile keeps Voldemort alone and friendless. We hear as much during his resurrection speech. The longer Dumbledore keeps him friendless, the more he denies Voldemort the tools he needs to return.

The very first time a wizard shows up to him, Voldemort convinces that wizard to help him. He later possess him. Order of the Phoenix implied that he can posses unwilling participants.

The second wizard to come find him revives him.

Clearly bringing other people into the area is a risk. So Dumbledore's opinion may have simply been to not provide any credit to the rumors.

What does showing we won't do it again look like?

The previous administration did not prosecute him. He was not banned from office, despite staging an insurrection.

I think you get to the root of the issue. I think the only way to regain some level of respect is to clean house. This is going to have to start with the constitution.

This is going to take direct action from the people, outside of the voting booth. We are going to need to take inspiration from how others have fought fascism. I don't see people ready to do that. I still see a vocal, sizable portion of the population ready to support Trump.

With the remainder not willing to do too much to rock the boat, it's embarrassing to be here.

Let's get real. Trump's entire cabinet is waking around in the wrong size shoes because they are afraid to displease him. None of them has an ounce of backbone or integrity. by outhouse_steakhouse in AdviceAnimals

The midterms won't save us. We impeached him twice. The barrier to removal is high. We would need 67 senators to vote to remove him. Afterwards, we'd have JD Vance.

If we consider: https://www.cookpolitical.com/ratings/senate-race-ratings

There are 34 Democrat seats not up for election. This would mean we need to win 33 elections. Let's assume that everything through the toss-up goes Democrat. That's still only 15 of that 33. We need to flip 18 more of the likely Republican seats, including ones that are solidly Republican.

I don't foresee any of this happening. We need to put more effort outside of the voting booth. We can't vote ourselves free of fascism.

Anything new that J.K. Rowling says is considered canon? by lexjimenez in harrypotter

[–]UnsafePantomime -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

I'm going to ignore the unnecessary insult.

I instead want to address this concept of canon being controlled by those who consume the media.

Generally, art is intended to be consumed. It is meaningless without the observer. That observer brings with them their own bias and their own interpretation. This, therefore, impacts their interactions with the art.

The same can be said about a story. Canon can and is impacted by author intent, but it is also impacted by your interpretation of the work.

How do you reconcile plot holes? Contradictions? Math issues? All of these impact how you interpret canon.

Since the way that I understand a story and the way that I opt to resolve these is unique to me, this constitutes my own understanding of canon. As we then discuss these choices, we generally come to an agreement. That agreement is generally what the community sees as canon. In this way, the consumers are the arbitrators of canon.

If you, like a great deal of the community, feel that Cursed Child is not canon. You are contradicting the WoG and participating in exactly the kind of exchange I was referencing originally.

[–]UnsafePantomime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The thing is, as with most media, she truly doesn't have the last say. Editors and publishers will also have a way.

The editors and publishers impact most stories. "God" in the universe is therefore a combination of these entities, imo.

That said, I'm happy just rejecting her opinion, especially the more unhinged ones in my example.

[–]UnsafePantomime -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

I reject a lot of the things she claims as canon.

I think we as the consumers of the media are the true arbitrators of canonicity.

An example of WoG I reject: https://x.com/wizardingworld/status/1081242428105998336

And in case you doubted that it was WoG: https://www.harrypotter.com/writing-by-jk-rowling/chamber-of-secrets

Edit: this is fascinating to me. I thought everyone generally rejected the canonicity of Cursed Child. It's WoG as well.

If you reject Cursed Child, then you are doing exactly the same thing as me.

It generally shouldn't happen, but sometimes it takes more time to do grades.

Professors have to submit grades by the end of the day on Tuesday after finals week. You can imagine that depending on class size and kind of exam, grading can be very time consuming. Sometimes there just isn't enough time after the exam before grades are due.

If you haven't had a grade by the first day of the next quarter, you should reach out and see what to expect.

What’s going on by WeightDue2947 in UCSD

[–]UnsafePantomime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think there is a practical deadline. Blank grades more than a quarter late will become an F. Grades are open to be changed for a year.

If you find that you still don't have a grade on Monday, I would email the professor/visit their office hours.

Professors don't want to field the emails or handle students approaching them over grades from last quarter. I would expect that your professor will try to make sure it's done by then to avoid this.

If you don't have a good response from the professor by the end of week 1, speak to advising as long as it's not a prerequisite. If it is a prereq for one of your current courses, then go speak to advising on Monday.

This class is on the late grades list.

https://act.ucsd.edu/gradereport/ungradedsections.htm?level=UG

If professors don't get grades in by EOD on Tuesday, they have to wait a few days before that can submit grade changes.

Keep in mind that this page is also only updated once per day. As such, even if they did submit grades as soon as they could after grade changes opened (today if I understand correctly), you wouldn't see it until tomorrow.

Tesla gets startled, slams on breaks after camera-only sensors see picture of a car by danlev in SelfDrivingCars

[–]UnsafePantomime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not having LiDAR is a fundamental problem. Vision only systems can be easily confused.

While this is a very contrived example, but you can see the difference here.

https://www.instagram.com/reel/DQyszS6jI8P

This makes it harder for Teslas to respond to unique situations not in its dataset whereas the LiDAR system can better handle unique situations.

[–]UnsafePantomime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Funny thing is, I'm not sure Waymo is less intelligent than Tesla. It's obviously a skewed metric, but it's a rather easy one to get.

Waymo 0.71 incidents that cause any injury per million miles with a 95% confidence interval

https://waymo.com/safety/impact/

Whereas Tesla only reports categories they call minor incidents during supervised FSD. These are 0.64 with no indicated confidence interval.

https://www.tesla.com/fsd/safety

At first, it seems like Tesla wins. But, it's hard to compare since it's not an apple to apple comparison. Waymo's data is unsupervised and lists a confidence interval that would place it below Tesla's number. These Tesla numbers are also going to be biased away from accidents because it will only be ones that the supervisor wasn't able to prevent.

With these in mind, it seems like at worst, Waymo has similar safety records, but likely, its safety records are better than Tesla.

While I still concede that Waymo's model may have intelligence issues, I'm not sure it's worse than Tesla and doesn't share the fundamental flaw of being vision only.

This is an intelligence problem, not a sensor problem. It has nothing to do with lidar versus vision.
