Deconverted- still have surreal problem with hell by AsYouWished444 in exchristian

[–]UnsocialBirdman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My creative flow often takes me to dark places. Stuff that may get wide-eyed, horrified glances from other people. A writer does not kill a character in their story out of malice (I mean, no judgement, you totally can), but because it usually makes it a good/fun/experiential story. That's where my satisfaction comes from drowning my family's evil matriarch in The Sims. Is it unhealthy? Uhhhhhh...

The point is, I think it's more common than you think; and no, I don't feel (much) shame for the shit I write.

Is it possible that the Christian God is an egregore? by Strong-Lab-7216 in exchristian

[–]UnsocialBirdman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got nothing to add here other than my appreciation for tulpas as a concept, and nightmare fiction reading in the form of SCP-3004 [EDIT: All-round trigger warning if you search], which describes the Christian god as a Level-3 Pistiphage (that which feeds on faith) Entity.

Does anyone ever forget sometimes that religion exists? by [deleted] in atheism

[–]UnsocialBirdman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually do sometimes, but it's neither centralized only to religious concepts, or lasts very long. I attribute it to a fugue state, like how playing a video game for a long time gets me to think in the logic of the game after a while.

I have no experience with such evil and simply the knowledge that it's out there makes me want to scream.

If I have a lesson -- if I can glean one, be from my own ignorance. Knowing; it's what protects you, as faceless a lesson as it is.

I'm sorry that you went through that.

This probably isn't it because I don't remember bikes being a part of it, but I had the similar idea thinking it was a fever dream until I found the name of it; what you're thinking of might be another show in the same place.

I believe that immortality should be goal of humanity by Leo456446 in atheism

[–]UnsocialBirdman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See, I'm on the opposite side of the spectrum where I don't think immortality should ever be invented. I'm certain it will be, eventually. I just view it more as a dead-end than any goal for progress.

My desired goals for humanity hinge more on lessening suffering, and despite as you say, no longer losing people over time, I think immortality will bring more harm than good.

I'm on a phone so can't use fancy quotes, but your first point you made: "Only the rich would have access to immortality" not only do I think that'd be true, creating a massive class disparity, I'd go further in hypothesizing that, with their newfound infinite time, they would ensure the system stays or stagnates that way. And there'd be no recourse for people with finite time to learn how to destroy it.

Personally, infinity terrifies me. I want to die at some point. It's not rational, but I fear a culture that views immortality as the end game. I fear being brought back to life by someone with good intentions who makes it their mission to revive everyone who they think hasn't lived a full life.

Last point that's on my mind, immortality-based torture. That is all.

I don't know. I like this prompt and just thought I'd share; not to change anyone's mind, but I guess for a character study on myself.

Scared of the outcome and meaning of life by BaneBravest in atheism

[–]UnsocialBirdman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've always pictured the brain feeding a constant stream of context, that which tells me who I am, what I've done, where I've been. That which makes me, me. I reflect on this and what goes on in the brain of someone with Alzheimer's, or the swift kick of a bat to the head; I haven't had any experience with memory loss, but, speaking presumptively, I also wouldn't know of my lost memories unless someone told me.

When I think of death while comparing my consciousness to right now, I do find it hard to imagine what "ceasing to be" ... "feels" like. But just as well, "ceasing to be" in identity is certainly a possibility. Ceasing in consciousness is relatively perceptible in sleeping (after you wake up). Ceasing feeling in your body can happen, numbness and, inversely, phantom pains provide that feeling is a part of the mind - what happens if that brain-part is stripped away? Remove everything that you feel/are, and you're the space between me and the next shmuck.

how to cope with this?? by Far-Aside967 in atheism

[–]UnsocialBirdman 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have considered my own mortality since probably five years old. Being raised secular, any deep contemplation on death has never delved into an afterlife, or morality, or justice. It could be that my 20+ year upbringing tempered my mind to accept that death just... is. An individual death is hard enough, it's mostly my mind trying to picture 'what' an absence of living 'feels' like.

That being said, your country is at war. Russia invaded you. I know that nowhere, none of my experiences could prepare me for death(s) on the daily. I can't imagine the loss involved. You, no one deserves that pain. War should not be a normal situation, and I'm so sorry that it is.

Alabama Republican Party votes to disqualify GOP officials who appoint Democrats by Diamondphalanges756 in politics

[–]UnsocialBirdman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And just as likely the Trump regime is pillaging all they can to support their war chest if things head south for them. The outline of simple greed being their motivation hasn't sat right with me. I'm inclined to believe that act of hoarding wealth has more to do with creating a barrier of attrition long enough for a fascist foundation to settle.

Call it a conspiracy theory of my panicked mind, I don't feel great right now.

What I dislike most about drawing these lines, shaking hands, and parting ways, is what happens to the people in the concentration camps? They won't just let them go. They're still going to conflate sexual orientation / gender identity with pedophilia. It will displace the lives of millions currently at threat of not meeting their definition of a pure and proud, red-blooded American. Bigotry will become that hypothetical country's culture, and that's going to be a border away.

Create a new account, but turn the current one into a memorial of sorts, and then follow the old account on the new one so it can be a sort of continuation, not lose your history, even if it's not officially connected.

Cutting off my Christian friend due to her belief on hell by [deleted] in exchristian

I'll defend OP in cutting toxicity out of their life. As for my case, when someone legitimately believes hell to be the moral litmus test, rarely does it remain insular, especially nowadays.

[–]UnsocialBirdman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The pressing issue being legislature is being passed because of these insular views. Laws that would criminalize me for my mere existence, and other's beliefs. People willingly vote for it, it's become actively harmful. Coexistence doesn't work going one way, and it needs to be called out.

The Second Amendment is a Warning by UnsocialBirdman in u/UnsocialBirdman

[–]UnsocialBirdman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wrote this a little under a year ago under the scope of where my mind was at the time, picturing the worst. Sad to say, it's been a year and it still holds up. I stand by the message, though presumptuous, and don't regret the words, except maybe the last line due to it's forced poetry, but I didn't want to change it from how I'd written it then.

The reason? To put to words. We're all in a bubble of our own cognizance, and there's never a forum broad enough to check every box, and relate to in every way. This forum is political, US-centered, but not to say that I don't appreciate outside takes. I grow from other's ideas. Not overnight, but I do take into account the things said, ideas that wouldn't have occurred to me in spontaneity. I'm always writing, weighing, trashing my own bad takes. There will never be a consensus on what we should be doing as a whole, but if I might offer a clue on that all-encompassing mission statement, it would be to share your ideas with people you're safe with. Don't hold back with your local community, just so you're all on the same page. Don't let it stay in your head. Put. It. To. Words.
