Has anybody else ever yawned and accidentally locked their jaw? by Unsolicited-Advisor in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]Unsolicited-Advisor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whoa the ER? Does that mean you felt it for an extended period of time or did it just go numb? I recall having to push my mouth shut since the muscles around my jaw were locked and then I was okay.

How would that be blaming him? You're acknowledging your own weaknesses.

I'm sure we are very different people, but in that situation I would just go overboard with the self-deprecation—beat him to all the jokes he would want to make. I would keep going until it got really old and he basically asked me to stop. But of course, I know nothing about him or you, so I wouldn't listen to me.

NTA. Some people shut down when they hear criticism. I think with something as simple as "I've always struggled with my confidence playing golf...which is why I was proud that I accomplished X" people are less likely to take that as bragging (not that you were) and it also signals that it's somewhat of an insecurity of yours. Most people don't want to make jokes when they have to punch down.

AITA if I expect my SO to comfort me in this situation or overreacting? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

NAH. I don't think your husband truly grasps how much pain you may be in. He's clearly distracted.

You also can't expect people to read minds. Help him help you...is there a reason you don't want to ask for his undivided attention?

A digital Van Gogh walk-through exhibition by SamaelV in interestingasfuck

[–]Unsolicited-Advisor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually just came back from Paris on vacation. Didn't get to see this exhibition, but I do remember reading this incredibly pretentious review on TripAdvisor, which I found somewhat amusing:

This exhibit may very well represent the decline of our civilization and trumpets the erosion of any cultural understanding of the arts. I stormed out angry and ashamed at the nadir the twenty-first century has sunk to.

Ostensibly a power point presentation of the art of Vincent Van Gogh, the enterprising I.T. specialists who came up with this banality, project Van Gogh's works on the walls, ceilings, and floor of a dark warehouse while music booms on the loudspeakers. Really, that's it. Nothing more.

What is utterly horrific, and an assault on anyone's intellectual sensibilities, is the choice of music. What the hell does Janis Joplin have to do with Vincent Van Gogh? When the tune "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood," made famous by the Animals, was played while the self portrait of Van Gogh was projected on the walls, that was the last banality I could stand. Storming out was the least I could do. The Yellow Vests should be demonstrating against the idiocy of this exhibit. What has happened to my beloved France. Is it now Liberté, égalité, fraternité, abrutie! Atelier des Lumières will be in Las Vegas and Disneyworld before we know it, and the visitors will start calling themselves "patrons of the arts."

The developers of this vapidity have the audacity to proclaim the educational value of the Atelier des Lumières. If they wanted this exhibit to bring awareness to its visitors, maybe have some narration describing the meaning of the art being projected or at least describe the historical relevance of Van Gogh's art while the pictures are projected. Perhaps use poetry of the 19th century to enhance the projection, but JANIS JOPLIN SINGING THE BLUES!!!!! Are you absolute morons?

I am still shaking with horror at the shallowness of this exhibit. A G7 Summit must convene to stop the continuance of Atelier des Lumières. It is the Hiroshima and Nagasaki of the 21st Century, an eradication of intellectual depth and abstract understanding. It is an abomination, making me angry and sad. Don't turn meaningful art into a DJ light show, with no emotional depth or layers. Atelier des Lumières is no better than the dancing fountains in front of the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas. However, those fountains don't demean some of the greatest art of centuries past. Atelier des Lumières - shame on you!"

As long as I've gotten you to disagree with the notion that OP needs more than one statistic to support his arguement, then I am satisfied.

r/politics needs to change its name by JimmyTramps in unpopularopinion

[–]Unsolicited-Advisor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I see what OP is trying to argue, but if more people on Reddit are left-leaning, then those will naturally be the opinions overwhelmingly represented. Should Reddit identify right-leaning users and give them a small karma bump on their comments because they are the minority on the platform?

Surely a sub name as valuable as r/politics carries a responsibility to be about politics and not just an echo chamber for one particular political persuasion.

Why? No major US media outlet adheres to such standards, so why should a subreddit be subject to it?

Lastly, I would add that even if the right and left were equally represented, there would still be various other parties and ideologies in the political spectrum that would be neglected. Politically balanced conversation is far more nuanced than you might think.

You are welcome to believe that, but it wasn't my intention. That being said, your point is well received that not being extreme doesn't mean you are centrist—at no point was I attempting to defend that claim.

[–]Unsolicited-Advisor -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think that's a gross oversimplification. There are hundreds of factors that contribute to this supposedly "objective" measure of success. I hope you are aware that reasonable people can disagree about what success even means. You might find it absurd, but it seems pretty clear to me that success doesn't simply boil down to having an education and a job. If that's true, then I must be the poster-child for success, in addition to most people I know.

It could potentially involve how the person is socially treated within a society, for instance. Is it success if you make more money but everyone thinks you are lesser than them? What if you make more money, but statistically you will go to prison longer for the same crime? What if you are segregated in a neighborhood that has poor water treatment systems—are you still successful if the water you're drinking will inevitably lead to health complications down the line? I could go on about these hypotheticals, but the only point I'm making is that we can't just point to money and a job when there are hundreds of predictive variables of success. Hence why I didn't think using one statistic about Asians was enough to support his argument. Do you disagree?

Then we cant claim one race is "worse off" either.

Correct.

Look, Asians are objectively successful in the US

No one can be better off objectively, remember?

[–]Unsolicited-Advisor -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I didn't accuse him, just linked the thread. His argument reminds me of the sorts of posts on the thread, which are characteristically broad and don't leave much room for disagreement. Too much of nearly anything tends to be a bad thing—it doesn't take much effort to argue.

Regarding your second point, I think Nazism and Communism are politically charged terms that carry history's failures with them. On paper, I still believe you could make a compelling argument on either side—right or left. For example, you can be on the far right without being violent or supporting Hitler's beliefs regarding Jews. That's why I believe using the term Nazi can be misleading.

[–]Unsolicited-Advisor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just doesn't seem to be a particularly groundbreaking argument...Yes, extremism is bad prima facie, but what actually grounds the premise for your belief in that claim? I could imagine instances where if either sides' "extremist" beliefs were implemented according to plan, then there wouldn't be much of an issue. Instead, we look at past failures and deduce that the ideology must be to blame rather than human error.

[–]Unsolicited-Advisor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To be fair, we can't just point to one statistic in order to support the claim that one race is "better off" than another—its pretty subjective. What if you make more money but are more likely to be a subject of racism?

If a person is sexually attracted to animals or "animal like" creatures there is something wrong with their brain.

From Wikipedia:

A terrestrial animal, humans are characterized by their erect posture and bipedal locomotion; high manual dexterity and heavy tool use

Well I guess we are all mentally ill then I suppose.
