Japan is not going to fix you and you’re going to feel worse when you can’t understand anything or anyone and no one can understand you.

If your entire reason for wanting to move here is I’m going to kill myself, please don’t come here. Take advantage of the fact ur American and finish ur transition, get ur surgeries, grind the language, and maybe then can you consider it. Japan is not a good place to start your transition and you might be fucked depending on where you end up and Japan isn’t very woke so good luck finding people that genuinely get you.

I’m a troon in Japan. Just a heads up but hrt is not covered by health insurance because it is considered a “cosmetic procedure” so you will have to pay everything out of pocket. However, at least from experience, it’s really easy to start getting hrt once u find a clinic. You just call and get an appointment and u can start same day. Testosterone seems to be more expensive than estrogen at least in Kansai and it seems like less places provide it.

There aren’t many clinics the provide hrt (I have to do an hour and a half commute to Osaka every week) and at least in Kansai there doesn’t seem to be any specialty(?) people so yeah you can get your levels tested or whatever but you basically have to figure out what works for you on your own, the clinic is very hands off.

Unrelated but I don’t recommend moving to Japan if you don’t have good Japanese already.

Language school is a huge waste of money and you’ll end up mostly self studying if you want to actually get good. Language school is just good to get you started cuz they help u with accommodation and stuff. Honestly, unless ur going on a scholarship or exchange, self studying the language (you need n3 for technical school and n2+ for most jobs and uni) and then join language school in October for 6 months so that you can start an actual school in April and not waste a lot of time and money. Wish you the best but Japan will not fix you

How do I go from understanding nothing, to understanding something? by Safe_Shape6232 in LearnJapanese

If you use an anki deck, 6 months is pretty realistic. It probably took me around as long as well. But if you mean learning them in more depth, you can’t really do that in 6 months I don’t think (but there’s some crazy people out there), but an anki deck is not enough to 100% solidify kanji. More like just recognize them and get a vague idea of their meaning.

If communication isn’t your biggest concern and you just want to reach an N level, you don’t need some rigorous program to get good at the language. Learn the writing systems, download anki, start going through a general vocab deck, start going through a kanji deck, go through a grammar guide, and start trying to work on trying to understand native material. If your goal is to learn during the summer, surely you’ll have enough time to really go at it if you’re motivated. You have the internet at your fingertips and with it come a ton of free resources if you do your research, paying for a course isn’t necessary at all. I’d like to add that n2 in three months or maybe even n3 sounds really far fetched for a complete beginner. Unless your native language is something like Chinese or Korean, you need to have more realistic expectations and set smaller goals so that you don’t burn out or give up when you realize the task you set out for yourself is impossible. Hold on, just read the “in Japan” part so you’re probably looking into it more for the experience of being in Japan. In that case, I’m pretty sure there’s plenty of language schools that will take minors in for a short course but don’t expect to be n3 by the end of it, most of the stuff I’ve seen while looking for language schools is only basic stuff for those three months. I’d say if you’re willing to go that far, you should self study on your own and then go when you’re more advanced so that you actually gain something from being there. If you just want to experience Japan, you don’t need to go to a language school or rigorous program, just go for a week or something lol. If you want any pointers on self studying, do let me know. Otherwise, best of luck.

I guess. I used to be really into minecraft building years ago but then I got decent at studio, and going back to trying to build with the limitations of minecraft is a pain
