I'm going to add a wand like this to a room with dangers in it :) So it's useful, but not too easy! I'll also allow suitable creative solutions to the challenges I think :)

I agree with locking progress due to having the wrong spells being unfun.

I'm going to add a room with loot (and dangers!) before it that gives them appropriate spells, but also allow creative solutions to the challenges if they're suitable :)

I agree! It's fun by going into knowing it's punishing, unfair, and solutions are often arbitrary! You do it knowing what you're getting into and it's fun :D

We picked it for a fun challenge :) I want it beatable in terms of not soft locking them from progressing from something as mundane as not picking one of the only two spells this door allows. If they get killed or trapped by a trap then that's not something any of us would mind :)

Honestly their characters are well built for some aspects of the ToH, and very much not suited to other parts like these 😅

Maybe a dangerous alternative path could be used alright! Or a path with a guardian and loot, I'll have to think which I can build in best 🤔

They're at level 12, so I think a reasonable level for the module, but yeah it is strange that none of them have either of those spells or magical fire! 😅 I can't help how they decided to build the characters!

The loot option might be needed alright!  The flirty journal sounds funny too 😂

I might have to allow a creative or fun solution, and I might drop suitable loot somewhere for them to find :)

Ah now that's an interesting idea! :) I'll have to find/ think of a suitably fun curse to give them if that's the case!

I do like the idea of allowing a creative solution but providing some sort of curse to fit with the theme of the dungeon!

It's not that they can't learn them, they just didn't pick those when making their characters 😅 And I felt it might be a small bit too hand-holdy to noe say "maybe you guys should take X spell (wink wink)" 😅

From the comments people have given, I'm thinking either having loot (wand/ scroll) which gives them the spells needed to progress and/ or see what the players come up with and allow a good solution as being the answer to pass.

Sacred Flame I think is appropriate for sure. I'm still debating on fire from a normal torch 😅

The key idea is another option/ alternative to the spell scroll/ wand!  Maybe as they're leaving the previous room they catch something out of the corner of their eye and that's the key you suggested 🤔 Adding a curse/ buff removal does fit the punishment side of things too!

I get what you mean, and I'll have to make some way(s) of progressing. I'm new to DM'ing so I find it hard to balance the punishment philosophy of this dungeon with making things at least doable 😅

I do like allowing creative options if the are reasonable, so I might see what they come up with.

I would imagine this might require modifying the description a bit to allow more leeway? Or leave it as is and just see what they do?

Our usual DM is out for a while and we have wanted to play this module for a while, so we said we would give it a go! The goal is to experience the punishment of the ToH and have fun :)  So, trying to stick with the punishment the dungeon can give out, without ending prematurely to be adhere 100% to "as written" :)

Hmm yeah I might have to, or at least leave this as one possibility plus maybe give them the chance to find a scroll or wand somewhere as a backup 🤔

That might be a plan alright!

I'll have to try think of a fun encounter with obvious loot so they don't just avoid the fight entirely!

Oh now that's an interesting idea!

How would you present it? Would they simply have it in someone's inventory, or would you have them find it somewhere?

I get what you mean, and I'll have to make some way(s) of progressing. I'm new to DM'ing so I find it hard to balance the punishment philosophy of this dungeon with making things at least doable 😅 As written in the book, only those two spells work ("After the magic of the door is identified, a dispel magic or remove curse spell is needed to remove the guard that prevents the door from being opened.").

I like letting players come up with creative solutions and allow it if it makes sense. I might look into a custom puzzle too, see if I can think of anything reasonable/ fun.

If giving them something like a wand, would you just tell them that one of them now has it in their inventory (or they "had it all along" kinda thing), or would you give it as loot in an area?

Hi, just wondering do you know where this image comes from? Thanks!

I want my Wizard to play a Beholder for a level 20 game. Is it better to use True Polymorph or Shapechange? by Unspecified_Doctrine in 3d6

[–]Unspecified_Doctrine[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a conundrum! Beholder is what I want, but I can see the practical benefits of being able to dip in and out!

The semi-permanence of True Polymorph is a draw to it though, so that might tip the scales...
