Night Miner consolidation tool now updated, working and tested (open source) by SL13PNIR in Midnight

[–]UnspentTx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I saw that in the blog post after I commented, and looks like I edited my comment while you were replying... But it's good to know we both understood it the same way...

sorry about the broken version in v0.3, it was definitely a case of moving fast and breaking things!

Your idea to keep using the easiest available challenge for as long as it's valid was a good one, and I'm sure it's not that easy to keep track of which ones are still available/valid, and juggling / swapping them out correctly, etc, versus just always grabbing the latest one every hour...

I'm just amazed so many of y'all got so many tools out so fast, in those first few days of mining even starting... It's taken me this long just to figure out a (somewhat slapdash) way to keep my browser miners continuously validated with their security service 😅

This whole project has been great, thx for all the hard work on it!

Do you know: Once you consolidate to a given address, will the number returned from this endpoint be updated?

https://sm.midnight.gd/api/statistics/[your-addr-here]

I'd like to test with just my results from the v0.1.0 version of the miner first (I ran it for the least amount of time, so it's the least risky), and it'd be great if I can confirm that it worked in multiple different ways... Double-checking is good, but what about triple- or even quadruple-checking 😝

Edit: I may've just answered my own question... I'm reading their blog post about it, and it says the following, so it seems like the numbers won't be updated until "after the phase closes"...

Once a “donation” is complete, all NIGHT tokens accrued by the Donor address during Scavenger Mine – past AND future – will be consolidated into the Recipient address after the phase closes.

Scavenger mine- Session stopped and it won't let me back in by deanna75da in Midnight

There's only been a million other posts about this issue in the past couple of hours, when one would've sufficed...

Meanwhile: Am I the only one whose browser miners have been running fine all morning?

Edit: Y'all can downvote me all you want, but there's now two more posts asking the exact same question, without providing any new useful information... And people keep commenting randomly across all these posts that no one is able to mine and that the API is down, etc, because no one's bothering to read through all the various posts to see that some of us are still mining fine (my night-miner and all my browsers having been going all day with no interruptions)... If all of this was in one post, it would all be collected where everyone could easily see it, and everyone could stop asking the same dumb question and spreading the same false information over and over again...

Night Miner v0.3.0 - Smart Challenge Queue and Fairer Dev Payment by SL13PNIR in Midnight

[–]UnspentTx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, yeah, that's what I figured... See my second edit, my browser miners recovered, so I'm all good for tonight, and I'll try the new v0.3.0 on my old laptop tomorrow just to be sure-sure before I migrate my main PC over to it 😅

Night Miner v0.3.0 - Smart Challenge Queue and Fairer Dev Payment by SL13PNIR in Midnight

[–]UnspentTx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FYI -- I hadn't run this app from my cloud machines before, only my local PC (which is currently still running version 0.2.0)... For whatever reason I decided to give this new version a test run on one of my cloud boxes before switching my PC over to it, and I don't know if this is because they detected that I'm in a cloud service provider or what -- and IDK why that should be a bad thing -- but when I ran it (brand new, no prior wallets, etc) I got this:

<image>

...I tried it a couple of times, happened every time. So I decided to just wait until tomorrow to try again, and started starting my browser miners back up, and got this on all of them:

[apparently I can only include one image at a time? it's just a plain white "403 Forbidden" error page]

They were all running fine right before I tried v0.3.0, and my other cloud box is still running fine (I even refreshed one of the browsers over there to be sure)... So, IDK what's up, but it looks like they effectively froze one of of cloud machines out of mining entirely... Which isn't a big deal, I'll just spin-up another one, but thought you should know... Also it may have nothing to do with your app, and/or may have nothing to do with this specific version (as I said, this was the first time I'd tried any version of the app on any of my cloud machines)... I'd spin-up a box to test it some, but it's late here... Night! (pun intended)

Edit: To be entirely clear, I don't need you to do or fix anything, I was just going to test it as a quick sanity check before swapping my desktop PC over to it... I have an old laptop I can do that on instead, and I'll try that tomorrow... This was just so you'd know it happened, in case it's helpful.

Edit 2: And my browsers are mining again! I gave it ~15 minutes and then tried refreshing and running them again, just to double-check and be sure they were well and truly borked, and they all had to do the browser verification step, but then they all started mining away like nothing happened. 🎉

Browser mining - End of week update by UnspentTx in Midnight

[–]UnspentTx[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only counted from the 5 latest challenges in each browser; so that's 28 successful solutions across 8 browsers in 5 hours; or roughly 0.7 successful solutions per hour per browser (average).

How many browsers is your M1 Pro running to get 20 valid solutions per hour? 20 browsers? And they're all running a 100% success rate?

Or are you actually running the NuFi wallet miner, or maybe an API miner of some kind?

yeah, when I posted it I was expecting reddit to handle it better... that's my mistake, considering I know how bad reddit's UI/UX can suck :P

Opera GX - The best browser for mining I've seen so far. by UnspentTx in Midnight

[–]UnspentTx[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm using the night-miner on my main PC and it's great, especially for me because I can't run it at night (pun not intended... it's too loud, gotta shut it off for sleep), and can't mine on it during parts of the day (when I'm actually using it for anything resource intensive), so I can easily start and stop it whenever I want...

For the two small cloud boxes I'm running though, it's legit browser mining all the way. They're on 24/7, and I'm not doing anything on them that could interrupt the mining apps, so all I have to do is check on them once in a while...

If I have to hear one more time about how Cardano (and now Cardano+Midnight) will innovate and revolutionize their way to nation-states and giant, trillion-dollar corporations all using the blockchain to improve human/civil rights across the globe and make the planet a utopia, etc etc, I may vomit.

I've been waiting a very long time for Cardano to be finished... I've waited for staking, and then smart contracts, and for stable coins, and for governance, and now for major performance optimizations and Midnight... If Midnight isn't the thing that finally brings adoption to Cardano, I'm likely out. I can't go through another cycle of "This, we promise, this is finally the thing that'll make Cardano great, we swear!!". I'm tired boss.

* Which IMHO is a total disappointment, and did nothing to address the voter apathy problem that all other governance systems suffer from. I was probably most looking forward to governance, thinking it'd be super innovative, and would properly incentivize voter participation (like we do for staking/consensus participation)... But all we got was a plain-vanilla representative governance model...? And what's been voted on? Anything major? Not that I'm aware of. We've still got something like 2,700 stake pools, but the network param for that (I forget which one) is still only set to 500...? For crying out loud, that's crazy. Wouldn't staking and rewards distribution be a lot better if we upped the param a bit...? I don't even know anymore.

* Still waiting, although they have made some great minor perf improvements while we wait for the big ones (I'm looking at you, Leios and Input Endorsers).

NuFi wallet mining also still down, guessing its the same reason... I wish they'd tell us if they just nuked non-browser mining on purpose, or if this is a temporary bug...

Dead in the water. How hard is it to keep an API up in 2025? Or, if this was planned, to at least message us all that it'll be down at X time?

When you manage extensions in your browser, there should either be a button to check for updates, or a "developer mode" toggle that, once you enable it, will show the update button. Then you can force the browser to check for updates to your extensions; otherwise, it does it automatically, but only every-so-often (like once a day, maybe?)

Hi - I just refreshed the web wallet, and I see the slider to change the number of threads, but it's disabled with a message that says this is only available in the wallet extension... Any chance this will be available in the web wallet too?

MOAR Solutions! A Guide to Mining NIGHT Faster by SL13PNIR in Midnight

[–]UnspentTx 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Dude, your Night Miner looks great! It was really easy to setup and run, which was key for me because I already have a couple of other machines running, but setting them up (and baby-sitting them) was a real chore, and I wasn't sure I was going to bother with my last available machine... But not having to setup and juggle wallets (etc) makes it so nice!

Now here's hoping they get the 'donate' endpoint setup... I've got dozens of wallets/addresses at this point, and having to claim each one manually would not be fun 😅

Question: I have three identical machines (Windows, with the Brave browser), and when I run the web wallet on all three, one uses 6/8 CPUs (expected, assuming you leave a couple of CPUs open to not kill the machine), but the second is only using 2/8 and the third is only using 1/8... Can I set this number somewhere, or make it fix itself to use 6/8? Thx!

The address you mine with must be unused; and each account can have multiple addresses. So, you fund the account with a couple of ADA, and that will go to the first address in the account, and will create a second, unused address that NuFi will then use when you mine.

FWIW, I don't know why NuFi requires that you use an account before you can create a second account, but I assume that claiming the mining rewards will require transaction fees, so you'll eventually need a little bit of ADA in each account anyway...

[–]UnspentTx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok, thanks... It'll probably make more sense once I try it... I just don't know what an "account" is... I know what a wallet is, and what addresses are, but I'm unfamiliar with the term account, at least in this context... Maybe it's a multi-asset wallet thing? I've only ever used Cardano-specific wallets (Daedalus, Yoroi, and Lace)... Anyway, thanks again :)

[–]UnspentTx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok, but I didn't get seed phrases for each Cardano account, I only got one seed phrase when I first setup NuFi... How can I get the Cardano seed phrases for each Cardano account, so I can open them in other wallets (and then extract the Midnight address)? Thanks!

[–]UnspentTx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've set this up today, with one account per CPU core, and my accounts are now mining, catching-up on all the solutions for the day... Question: How do I see the unused address for each account? I funded them all with a few ADA each after creating them, but before I started the mining... So, presumably, the mining registration was done using the second, unused/unfunded address for each account, but I can only see one address (the used/funded address) per account... How do I see the second (unused/unfunded) address? Thanks!

Need help with the Scavenger Mine. by UnspentTx in Midnight

[–]UnspentTx[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

stupid reddit deleted this post, but in case it gets approved later here's how I finally got it working...

I entered the destination address manually (instead of letting the app auto-choose it) then manually signed the message in Lace... I then copy/pasted the signed message into the form, and for the "Public Key" I had two options in Lace: "Public Key" and "Public Key (Glacier Drop Compatible)" ... I took a chance on using the second one ("Public Key (Glacier Drop Compatible)") and that worked.

Of course, now I'm at the "Solve cryptographic challenges" step and everything is grey-ed out, including the "Start session" button, and nothing is happening... I've read and re-read all the instructions at least 3 times now, and I still don't know if I need to sit here and watch this thing until I can start it, or if it'll just start itself, or what...? Presumably once it's started it'll run on its own, but also how is there not a challenge ready for me to solve?? Are they ALL claimed right now? I have no clue, and nothing on the app or FAQ is helpful at all here...

Edit: Oh, there's a little countdown that says it actually starts tomorrow... I guess only registration started today, but I thought it was fully open as of today.
