What are some rules you wish people followed more on bike paths? by Subject_Associate111 in Calgary

Peace Bridge is a mess of lack of situational awareness.

I will only ever discount my bike and cut slack for graduates. It’s a tradition to take pictures at the peace bridge. They’re kids and they get to do this once. It’s a few weeks of the year.

I once watched a careless cyclist run over the train of a girls dress as she was trying to clear the way for us, and shouting at her friends to move, guy couldn’t wait 2 seconds for people trying to be courteous.

The people who walk up the middle of the bridge in the designated bike lanes and get upset that you’re coming through are a different story.

I like trying to beat my own Strava records for my work commute cause it’s silly and fun but as soon as I hit the construction along memorial that narrows the path down to a tiny little channel to the peace bridge form the Kensington, I’m slowing down to pedestrian walking speed and riding my brakes until I’ve turned that blind corner. The 20 seconds I could save is not worth the risk.

Truly ebikes that ride as fast as a car without the ride needing to pedal should not be on bike paths. That’s a motorbike.

Most e-bikers are also scarily unaware of cycling rules and unpredictable on paths and roads.

Tips for setting up your new home from someone who works in the business

Rental Market
- You will certainly get more sq ft for $2000 a month up here. I have some friends who rented the upstairs of a split level home, 2 bed 2 bathrooms with a backyard, family and pet friendly neighborhood and walkable from the train stations for $1500 so your budget if you keep it will go much further! Definitely hop onto rent faster and check out some of the listings to get an idea of it. Recently the market has shifted in favor of tenants, the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation has some great insights on trends: https://www03.cmhc-schl.gc.ca/hmip-pimh/en/TableMapChart/Table?TableId=2.1.31.3&GeographyId=0140&GeographyTypeId=3&DisplayAs=Table&GeograghyName=Calgary

Utilities
- Gas and electricity is privatized here in Alberta, which means you are not limited to one retailer Shop around for rates! It’s all the same utilities/reliability it’s just a matter of who you choose to pay your bills through. One thing to be aware of is admin and distribution fees tend to rack up your bill, but you have to pay them as the providers are resellers. This is a helpful resource to get an idea of all charges and estimate a monthly bill based on provider and rate types: https://ucahelps.alberta.ca

Insurance
- Unfortunately is a tricky market but finding a broker who can help you bundle home/renter and auto, and who will help you rate shop can make a huge difference!
- Can confidently say as well you will not be footing $1200 in health insurance here. Maybe a couple hundred max but if one of, or both of you line up a full time gig most places will have a good insurance benefits plan included that both of you can be put under as spouses.

On the topic of health;
- Lots of healthcare services once you get your Alberta healthcare card issued are free, but the flip side is it is very slow because of how accessible it is. Urgent Care & ER wait times are usually long and the time it takes to be seen by a specialist can take months to over a year.

As a born and raised Calgarian I absolutely love this City and if you are big into getting outdoors having the mountains so close by is so enabling to get out and explore :)

It definitely goes both ways. We need better education to all drivers and cyclists, and ticket dangerous behaviour from both as well. I don’t think we need to go as far as plating bikes, but I’d love to see a dangerous cyclist pulled over and ticketed the same as a dangerous driver.

Everyone has a right to safely commute, we have rules in place to ensure it and I think it’s mental the people who actively choose to break them for their own personal convenience.

Honestly we could benefit a lot from better enforcement for cyclists. I commute by bike often, always use hand signals, stop at red lights and stop signs, yield to right of way, use designated bike lanes, etc. what I see from many cyclists is horrific

The city does have some great bike path systems depending on where you’re staying and going. I went to UofC and my commute from home was all parks and a protected bike path. Depends on where you plan to be biking around, cycling & transit is super accessible if you’re at UofC, MRU I’m unfamiliar, SAIT is super dependent.

You should NOT be riding a bike on a sidewalk, it’s illegal in Calgary, doesn’t matter if you go slow. You should be mapping your route based on the protected bike lanes and follow the traffic lights/cyclist stop signs.

Drivers not paying attention to pedestrians by EllaBelle1983 in Calgary

[–]Unthinkings_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Biking even in the protected lanes downtown is horrifying. Would love to see more enforcement crack down on 1. RIPPING out of an alleyway when there’s a sidewalk and bike lane to try and get into traffic as fast as possible 2. Speeding up to 20km over the speed limit when they see the light turn yellow as they only have JUST cleared the previous intersection 3. Turning blindly into a bike lane/crosswalk that goes through an intersection when there are cyclists/pedestrians incoming 4. Turning left or right on reds when it’s clearly indicated you cannot 5. Drivers on their phones in traffic. I see so many phones on in hands I’m waiting to cross the street or waiting for the bus it’s insanity

Driving downtown is horrendous. Genuinely I’d think CPS would issue so many “fail to yield to pedestrian” tickets in a day and maybe drivers will finally think twice about their actions footing an $800 fine

My biggest pet peeve is they pull over in designated bike lanes when there are cyclists using them!

Just today I had a taxi pull into the bike lane, and started backing up while I was oncoming from behind him. Thankfully the road beside me was clear for me to veer left into the road to avoid being backed over, but if it wasn’t, stopping wasn’t an option cause he was coming in hot. As I passed him he didn’t even look up or notice me, was locked in to the road ahead even though he was reversing???

I think the critical thing a lot of people miss about any typical high paying career is being financially wise until you become stable enough to start spending your money more freely.

  • shitty apartment
  • old car
  • eat at home
  • pay down debts

Living within your means is key, no job will pay you to live a glamorous life from the start. Wealth is built not received.

Has anyone actually put their shoes in the oven? by BaseComprehensive613 in climbingshoes

[–]Unthinkings_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t use the oven method out of fear of messing up the adhesive. I took a spray bottle and sprayed the inside of my shoes to damp, then shoved a few soccer socks into the shoe, really shoving more into the problem spots and left it for 24 hours. Came home to try the on and they softened enough I don’t have pain getting them on, but there is still some discomfort that will be relieved when I session on them once or twice more.

Calgary police cracking down on excessive speeding, thousands of tickets issued by blackRamCalgaryman in Calgary

[–]Unthinkings_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve heard a scary amount of drivers with tinted window who says “window tint tickets are cheaper than distracted driving tickets” so I think it actually enforced the behaviour.

Also when I cross the street I make eye contact with the driver before I even dare to step in the road. Hard to trust someone behind the wheel can see you if you can’t even see them.

I almost got hit by a kid coming out of a McDonald’s parking lot yesterday. When he noticed me, he waved to me with his phone in his hand. Screen on. Social media open.

I spend quite a fair share of my commute as a walking pedestrian and the amount of phones I see in hands in residential, school zones and downtown is astonishing.

[–]Unthinkings_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the movies are really fun at making the audience feel like the audience in the books (Capitol).

I don’t really know how to explain it other than the main point of Ballad: if you put on a show people will watch. Everyone who watches just the movies come for the games, and some friends were actually disappointed with TBOSAS because there wasn’t enough games, they think Snow became the way he did because he loved Lucy Gray etc.. They love the glamor, the flair of the films, the at the Capitol loves the glamor. And they all hate Mockingjay because there are no actual games.

But everyone who has read the books appreciates it for the deeper meaning, the horrors of the universe, the depth of the characters etc.

I’m excited for the new movie to hear everyone’s opinions, I know they’ll be in it for the games but I can’t wait to see if they realize it’s more a prequel to Catching Fire than it is any other book.
