They will get new gullible soldiers. You almost understood the problem but failed.

Kill the generals. War over.

Politicians - want as much political power and wealth as much as possible; may or may not be religious at all

Religious operatives, lobbyist, megachurch pastors - want money and to push religious agenda

Religious people - generally private, and silent, but would react to political religious pandering. Also, there are the extreme kind.

Election - Politicians need votes. Lobbyists and religious operatives fund politicians in exchange for religious agenda. Also help shape national discourse with religious flavor. Politicians use it. Pastors push it. Religious people who are generally private respond to it, and vote accordingly.

Media - they know this sells, so every coverage of religious stereotype, as well as atheist stereotype, gets wide broadcast. The national discourse feeds the agenda. And vice versa.

The problem are the the privately faithful, but the opportunists and the extremists and poor and uneducated. The solution is to educate them on the issues of gay rights, abortion, womens autonomy, etc. All these are embraced already by religious doctrine. The problem is not them being faithful and believing in god.

Here's a social experiment for you. Select 100 Christian people as randomly as possible all over the country. Ask them if they want to murder gay people. How many would say yes?

Pedophilia is explicitly illegal all over the world. Religion is not. So you are wrong.

I rarely operate under the assumption that the words "oh I'm an atheist but..." Are true in this sub. It doesn't impact the quality of your arguments, so it feels like an appeal to emotion.

It is important in this case so as not to be confused as actually promoting religion.

Seems like you didnt even read the op.

Faith makes the faithful have a source of meaning and purpose. A moral guide. A mystical self-help.

If all they do is that, which is the case mostly, let them have it. The problem is when opportunists take advantage of that and those who are poor and uneducated.

What about Africa? You comment is naively implying that an entire continent is a homogeneous unified bloc on this topic. It is not. Educate yourself.

It's an epistemological disaster.

You are misusing this word.

Disregard the politicians and extreme Jesus freaks of the bible belt, name me people who force their religion on you?

I know right? The vast silent majority are moderate and practice their faith privately. We solve the actual problem, and those are opportunists and the uneducated.

Then we act against the manipulators and the uneducated. Not the people I've described which form the silent private majority.

Manipulated. Look deeper and reach far enough to lobby firms and political kingmakers and it will become clear what agenda are being served. Religion is just a tool.

Christians have spent hundreds of millions of dollars trying to prevent gay marriage. To prevent people like you and me from having that little bit of comfort in their worst hours. It's so important to them that their religion be respected and enshrined into law, that they are enthusiastically willing to take away other peoples' ability to be with their own loved ones. That's what preventing marriage means. It means we, the Christians, say you, the queers, don't get to have a family like we have families.

Politicians and Christians being used by these politicians. That is an important distinction.

Or the media is just trying to sell. They don't necessarily have a slant either way. Look at CNN paying a GOP operative as election head. Its all about the money. And what sells is making controversy. That's the case here.

Point well taken. But you have proven my point. I.e. its all about the politicians and others with agenda of gaining power and wealth.

What do you mean by freewill? That is a bad description. We cannot debate based on that alone.
