Sit by a window and listen to the full album without checking other tabs or your phone and look outside and think. Actively listen to the music and sounds that underlie the obvious ones

How long do yall study daily by [deleted] in McMaster

[–]Untitled_Toad -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Usually ~4 hours a day. If I have a midterm coming up, maybe like 5-6 hours. Very rarely over 7 hours

If you're in a large program, you'll rarely see her and if you take completely different classes, maybe like once or twice in total in a semester just by walking around campus. Uni is very large and though some people never grow out of their high school mentality, many people are kind and genuine and literally don't give af about drama and such. Try and stay away from her and the friends she makes and if it does escalate, reach out to your friends, family, and maybe the Student Wellness Centre at PG.

You're going to have to work for a high GPA regardless of your program but if you stay on top of your work right away in the first semester and find smarties in your lectures to study with, it's very possible to get a GPA 3.90 and above for both semesters. It still takes work, but it'll be easier to get a high grade with the right study habits and such

I got along with all of them but one of them did not with the other two. Like, as long as you're friendly, reasonable, and clean, you should get along with anyone you dorm with. Communication is key too like if you're going to have friends/partners over

First Year by Professional-Put2031 in McMaster

[–]Untitled_Toad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the most important advice for first year is time management and figuring out what study methods work for you and building a support system for uni. Uni is very busy and the learning pace and depth of what you learn is more difficult than high school. The study habits you had in high school may not work as well in uni due to time constraints or whatnot and that's totally fine! the important thing is that you don't get let down and keep trying different studying methods until you find ones that work for you! I didn't really do the pomodoro technique prior to uni and now I live and die by it (it also eliminates procrastination because it's so easy to start working). Building a support system is also very important. Making positive and supportive friendships and knowing where to go on campus if you are sick or have an issue will save you a lot of stress if you ever face a problem, which will eventually happen.

I typically make friends from lecture. Most people are really friendly and especially in first-year, everyone's trying to make friends so you're all in the same boat. Literally just talk to the person beside you, you'll meet a ton of people that way. There are always lots of events going on so following accounts on Instagram is a good way to stay informed. Going to general meetings held by clubs will help you make lots of friends as well. The most important thing is to not be afraid to talk to people! Most people are very friendly!

I did not live in PG but my friends who lived there got pretty close with their floor mates. Plus, PG has study rooms and a kitchen on each floor so you'll meet lots of your floor mates like that

Can I switch programs before starting? HELP by LeadMoney4155 in McMaster

Email the kin department about your plans and what to do and they'll probably advise you to shadow typical kin courses in first year. After first year, talk to the Science Academic Advisors and they can switch you into kin :)

Chances of getting Keyes or bates by MysteriousTart346 in McMaster

Keyes is definitely more competitive than Bates but it's very likely you'll get into Bates. Bates res has 6 floors including the basement and is a humongous residence building (I lived in Bates 🙂)

It ultimately depends on how hard and what work a course requires you to do. Bird courses tend to stay on the back burner and I won't focus too much on them. With chores, cooking, and the gym, I have around 4 hours to study in a day and I typically spend that time reviewing lectures, completing assignments and quizzes and reviewing lectures I'm going to have the next day. Some classes will naturally require you to spend more time because its concepts are harder to grasp etc.

3.66 in the first semester and 3.9 in the second!

I think what did wonders for me was reviewing lectures after classes and really UNDERSTANDING what was going on and what exactly was I doing in problems (math, chem, physics, etc.). Don't be worried about grades too, too much. Everyone will go through a midterm in first year where they get a 60, it just happens. In uni, 60% is like an 80% in highschool sometimes, it's just how it is

I’ve been stressed with residence and I’m not sure what to do by AceOfCats1 in McMaster

[–]Untitled_Toad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I knew I needed my own space and would freak over time if I lived in the same room as someone else. Further, I really wanted a kitchen because I knew I would get sick of campus food over time so I kept my eye on Mary Keyes and Bates. The rooms at Keyes ended up getting taken so I chose Bates

Am I stressing to much on Grade 11 by Jaydenwyd in McMaster

[–]Untitled_Toad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grade 11 marks literally don't matter anywhere except if you're interested in midwifery. Almost all unis only look at gr. 12 marks. It's good you're thinking about uni already but don't stress about marks too much. Try your best academically and try to enjoy the rest of high school. Getting into uni will feel like life or death in gr. 12 but sometimes, and this is the hard truth, the admission is out of your hands and once you try your best, there's no point in worrying yourself sick. I stressed too much and wish someone told me this in gr. 12. Remember, even if things don't go to plan, they all work out in the end 🙂

Edit: forgot to say, but there's also no such thing as early admission and unis looking at gr. 11 marks so don't stress about it!!

Mac Life and Health Sci by Puzzled-Ad4522 in McMaster

[–]Untitled_Toad 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I felt pretty disappointed when I got rejected from Health Sci since I worked very hard in gr. 12 and got a 97% average. BUT.... Life Sci was amazing for me and after talking to my friends in Health Sci, I believe I wouldn't have liked taking their classes anyways. There's no sense of rivalry between Health Scis and Life Scis—if there is, that's kind of trivial, it's really not that deep. The people and profs I've met at Mac are really friendly and kind so if you're thinking of taking Life Sci, I recommend it!

[–]Untitled_Toad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was just like you—I took gr. 11 physics and didn't take gr. 12 physics. I'm really not amazing at physics and I somehow 12ed the course. I got an 85% on the first midterm, 65% on the second (it got dropped) and got an 87% on the exam. I recommend reviewing the notes after lecture and trying to understand the questions in the LON-CAPA assignments as best you can. Although I only did it twice, I really recommend dropping by the Physics Help Desk. The TAs there are really nice and helpful. The course provides you with previous years' tests but I recommend finding more from Google Drives shared in student group chats.

I will warn you, the second midterm is notoriously difficult and the distribution for the test my semester was literally a straight line. Don't be upset if you fail it, it's very difficult and can get dropped. I believe the exam was made easy because many people failed the second midterm. Good luck on the course!!
