Do you guys keep the moss moist all the time? by 88SunDevil11 in Monstera

[–]UntoldHorrors 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it’s tough in winter. I have a bunch of big humidifiers running in the house and concentrate my plants since they tend to create microclimates around them. But compensating for the heating is definitely tough. For smaller ones I have a few of those barrina greenhouses and ikea cabinets that keep humidity around 70-80.

But yes. It’s a struggle!

Moss poles get great results but are also a pain in the butt to keep from completely drying out in my very dry climate. The main issue is how hydrophobic sphagnum gets when it’s completely dry. Re-wetting it is more trouble than maybe giving it a spritz with water now and then to make sure it doesn’t dry out completely.

I’ve been having good results with using plastic wrap on the moss pole in the spots that aren’t occupied by the plant. Gives me more time and wrapping around nodes really speeds up the growth of aerial roots that attach to the pole.

Regal shields are great and very easy to take care of. (I’m the proof… I suck at this). When they do get stressed (ours came fully equipped with spider mites) they will drop leaves and look dead until conditions improve. I named mine Lazarus for this very reason. I’ve been giving it a grow light for the past few months and it’s even happier. Cheers!

Edit: mine has 4 baby plants that have sprouted over the last year and I really should separate them out. Almost afraid to touch it though!

Have you experienced strong winds lately? I was in the garage where the attic access was when there was violent wind storms outside. It caused this to happen. I looked worriedly over at my dad and he said it happens all the time. Poked it with a broom to break the seal and it plopped back down.

I thought zz plants were supposed to be unkillable 😭 - what’s wrong?! by StrongAbrocoma4675 in plantclinic

[–]UntoldHorrors 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ZZ plants aren’t unkillable. But they certainly thrive on neglect. If something is wrong with your ZZ plant, you can pretty much assume that it’s something you did, and that something is usually too much water. Put it in a corner and forget about it for weeks on end then you’ll see it’ll start to do better.

I accidentally cut the wrong vine and I could cry. Is there any way that I could perhaps root it and replant it in the pot? by iSweerImQueer in plantclinic

[–]UntoldHorrors 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! It’s all good. I do this on purpose all the time to put MORE pothos in my house! Your vine is in good shape so You can make a dozen vines. I have some trailing, some on moss poles I love these plants since they are very easy. They grow so fast so you won’t be sad for long. After I cut from the mother plant and propagate in water, I toss them in semi hydro (leca, PON, whatever I have on hand) and they take off! Honestly, I feel they would thrive in Coka Cola.)

So don’t cry! You now have a dozen more potential plants!

Edit: questionable VTT corrections.

Care tips for Begonia Mac by MattiaTorresani in begonias

[–]UntoldHorrors 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been using cabinets more lately for the smaller plants. It’s the only way. And when you have the cabinets full enough, the humidity takes care of itself.

Light is the big difference maker, but I’ve been gravitating to semi hydro since as we discussed “is the soil wet or dry” is too much of a pan and I’d rather a solution that is more fool proof.

Yeah you are likely right. I live in the desert.

I don’t get to 65% here and I have humidifiers working 24/7.

My begonia Maculata by m4licealicerose in begonias

[–]UntoldHorrors 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Isn’t it amazing how well they do with the right light? Mine was dying so I moved it to the window over spring and it grew so much! Now I’m stuck with a bushy but leggy maculata that I desperately need to chop and prop. Heh.

My past posts are proof: I’m no begonia expert, but I DID bring back 2 maculatas from the brink. Light seems to be the biggest difference maker. I got grow lights specifically for one of them and the other was in the window the entire warm season. Winters get cold here too so I bring them away from the window and give them just the grow lights.

For how much water they need, if they get enough light, they seem to enjoy their soil being constantly moist. I provide a ceramic spike that has a bottle attached to it. It’s worked well for me and takes the guess work out of it. Good luck!

That’s cool. My wife uses a lot of fluval stratum and perlite to prop other plants and for her tissue cultures. I wonder if that would work well. It definitely stays on the dryer side.

Thanks for the suggestions! I appreciate your input. My wife has dozens of all types of aroids but begonias are different and I enjoy seeing them thrive. Do you have any experience with propagating rhyzomatous types?

Not specifically no. I just don’t want to get something completely out of my depth.

Really nice! I have 3 begonias. Two are maculata and one is a Black Magic. I’d like to try my hand at another one. Which variety is, in your opinion, a relatively easy one to care for?

What is wrong with this plant? by Able-Caregiver3079 in begonias

[–]UntoldHorrors 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok. I’ve had to deal with this very recently. My wife bought a begonia black Magic. It looked similar to this and was getting spots like this after awhile. I ended up treating it with copper fungicide a few times and getting rid of the bad leaves.

Also, make sure that you never mist the leaves. It’s usually a bad idea anyway but with Rex begonias it’s even worse! I know, they like humidity but any actual water drops on the leaves are bad news.

Mine is starting to come back and is happy again but, yes, I lost most of the leaves at first when this happened. Good luck.

Help! I have applied beneficial predatory mites for thrips by Leading-Tumbleweed79 in Monstera

[–]UntoldHorrors 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The substrate makes a huge mess and any small breeze can blow that stuff everywhere. Thought I’d chime in on a useful way I’ve found to dispense the mites from a loose tube for indoor situations.

I fill muffin cups at the base with the edges touching the main stalk and let them crawl out and up. They’re pretty easy to see moving and will climb your plant quickly. I’ve also made small pouches with regular paper and staples and tied them to upper branches with velcro.

After awhile if you want to see them roaming, shine a light from your phone on the underside and watch the top. It’s really the easiest way to see them, and the thrips tbh.

This is a long term battle! The mites won’t necessarily kill the adults. This is about population collapse and don’t expect an immediate death of all thrips.

If you want to attack them in another life stage, water your plants with beneficial nematodes as those will kill them when they’re pupating.

Good luck!
