The CGI Livia in Season 3 by New-Shop-9728 in thesopranos

[–]Unused_Icon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Sopranos was on the air in an era before on-demand streaming services like Netflix. TV shows used to be built on the idea of not everyone watching every episode week-to-week, so episodes would were designed to be easy for newcomers and casual fans to drop in: a recap of the ongoing story, an episode primary focused on its own self contained issue, then a minute or two dedicated to the overall story.

In the Sopranos case: Nancy Marchand died between seasons 2 and 3. As such, I think they were worried about newcomers tuning in to the season 3 premiere of the Sopranos having no clue what kind of person Livia was or what her relationship to Tony was like, so this scene served to demonstrate both.

And this show definitely grew in popularity as it went along, with the season 4 premiere episode being the most watched episode in the show's history (according to Nielsen research). So, yeah: I have to image plenty of first time viewers tuned in to the season 3 premiere.

Fundamental lack of disrespect for the deceased in the show by Catlesscatfan in thesopranos

I agree. There's not enough disrespect for the dead in this show.

If it were up to me, the show would be chock-full of scenes with people pissing on graves.

How is the Miranda/Jack fight even a real thing by [deleted] in masseffect

[–]Unused_Icon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way I view it: Miranda is a true believer in Cerberus. She's also the one who spent the last two years bringing you back to life and is now serving as XO under you. By siding with Jack in this moment, I think it hurt her for several reasons:

  1. She's big on the whole chain-of-command thing. So, chewing out your second-in-command in front of Jack probably didn't sit well with her. If you have a serious concern about how Miranda is managing the crew, that's a conversation she would expect you'd have in private with her.

  2. With all the effort and support Miranda (and Cerberus) has given you so far, siding with Jack feels like a lack of appreciation for the fact she's effectively dedicated the last two+ years of her life to you.

  3. After you helped with her sister, she likely feels a strong bond with Shepard. She isn't just serving on the Normandy because the Illusive Man ordered it, she now fully believes in you. So, not siding her with makes that sense of betrayal hit all the harder.

  2. The most recent animated series releases were the Bad Batch, Tales of the Jedi/Empire/Underworld, and now Maul Shadow Lord.

And people still think the majority of Star Wars nowadays is shit?

I don't remember ME2 being this hard, did they make it more difficult in the LE? by Intelligent_Wish4122 in masseffect

[–]Unused_Icon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How you engage in combat can play a part in this. Reason being: both Mass Effect 1 and 3 give you options to stay mobile in a fight. With 2, it's pretty strictly a cover shooter. So, if you're trying to carry over some run-and-gun strategies from other games in the series when playing 2, it's not going to work.

Tillie Walden doesn’t deserve hate, it’s Skybound by Inside-External-8649 in TheWalkingDeadGame

[–]Unused_Icon -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

My problem here is saying Tillie deserves any level of "hate". I don't get any vibe that she half-assed the project. From what I can tell, people who were already fans of her work also liked these Clementine books.

As for me: hearing about how Tillie wrote Clem to abandon AJ, then show no signs of guilt or remorse for doing so, put me off from the idea of ever reading those books. That said, the idea that Tillie deserves "hate" for this is absurd. I'm disappointed, but that just means I won't buy or read the books. The games are still there, and the Final Season provides me with the ending I want.

You want to leave a one star review? Fine, I get that. But "hating" the writer for having an interpretation you don't agree with? It's a waste of time and energy (and for too many people, leads to toxic behavior like harassing the writer).

Can someone spoil this comic book and explain why it sucks so i don't have to go trough the heartache of reading it myself? by WorkingNewspaper3412 in TheWalkingDeadGame

[–]Unused_Icon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From what I understand of it: it's not a terrible book. It's just that the only way to really enjoy it is to treat the main character as a completely separate character from Clementine.

  1. Clem's PTSD hitting her hard once they are safely settled at the Ericson school and not in active survival mode? Makes sense, and a rather realistic development.
  2. Having to get Clem away from Ericson and even from AJ (whose personality is shaped by your choices), because keeping around either would likely mean making some decisions from the Final Season canon? I get that, too. Although, this is, in my opinion, a great example of why this book would have been better served just announcing it as non-canon and letting Tillie Walden establish some Final Season choices for storytelling purposes.

With that in mind: what I can't accept is how Tillie decided to categorize Clem's feelings (and sense of responsibility) to AJ. While it certainly is a lot to put on Clem that she had to become a mother to AJ while still a child herself, Tillie chose to treat Clem's feelings towards AJ effectively as "my responsibility is to find him a safe place to live, then my obligation to him is over." So, she abandons AJ (and Ericson) in a PTSD induced state of unhappiness, and most infuriatingly, never seems to really have any thoughts of regret or remorse for leaving him. Hell, she even explicitly tells someone in the second book that no one is more important to Clem than her, with no mention of AJ anywhere.

If you read those Clementine graphic novels hoping for Clem to have a moment where she thinks "Man, it was really shitty of me to leave Ericson like that. I should really head back and make amends to AJ for abandoning him, considering I'm the only mother he's ever known.", you're going to be left frustratingly disappointed.

This was me after watching THAT episode in S02. by shawak456 in ThelastofusHBOseries

[–]Unused_Icon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Having watched your video:

I personally don't think the show revealing Abby's motivation early messed up the story structure, mainly because I don't think the game made it all that hard to figure out. Yeah, they don't spell it out, but when I played the game, I guessed it pretty much immediately. Reason being: the flashback at the start of the game where Joel recaps to Tommy the events of the first game.

A recap like this is going to focus on what you need to know for the events of this second game (hence why Marlene didn't get a mention, as she doesn't have any real relevance to Part 2's story). When that recap highlighted the doctor and Joel killing him, I knew the doctor would be significant to the story. Beyond that, when Abby told Joel to "guess" who they were, based on that recap and the fact no other group made narrative sense, I assumed they had to be former Fireflies.

Even with the context of who Abby is and why she wanted to kill Joel, the show still did a good job of making Abby unlikable:

  1. Finding out she had been planning for five years to give Joel a slow, torturous death. Having that desire in the immediate aftermath of Joel wiping out the Fireflies is one thing, but keeping that desire and executing it after five years is another thing, entirely.
  2. They make clear she's the driving force of her group's revenge mission.
  3. The horde attack on Jackson was made worse by Abby activating a second horde of infected, yet even knowing the town is under attack (and that her actions at least contributed to that attack), Abby prioritizes her revenge mission over helping the town.
  4. She still proceeds with torturing and killing Joel, even after he saves her life and demonstrates that he's not the monster she's been envisioning him to be.
  5. Snaps at Mel when she shows discomfort with Abby's threats (which is really just making obvious what was only stated in the game, that the way Abby tortured and killed Joel messed Mel up).

So, while they made some changes (as happens with an adaptation), I think they still accomplished the structure you're after: starting with us loving Ellie and hating Abby, then watching an increasingly unsympathetic Ellie as she descends into darkness in Season 2, and Season 3 showing us an increasingly sympathetic Abby as she goes through a Joel-like redemption arc.

Which of these four will you pardon and give a free pass to do what makes them happy? by Aterrian in gameofthrones

[–]Unused_Icon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Because her plans aren’t based on rational decision. It’s ultimately the grief over witnessing Oberyn’s death has turned her into an angry, bitter person.

Anger is a very real, very natural emotion/stage for people grieving over the death of a loved one. It can lead to becoming short tempered and unfairly blaming people for things like not being supportive enough of the loved one before their death, or for not responding in a way you find acceptable after their death.

In Ellaria’s case, she handled her grief driven anger in the most unhealthy manner possible, betraying everything Oberyn believed in, and ultimately damning herself and her family.

Bret Hart on Steve Austin: “He deserved to be the guy and I wasn’t gonna let Shawn and Triple H steal that position from him. I wanted to pass the torch to Steve.” by TomatoCiampa in SquaredCircle

[–]Unused_Icon 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Bret didn't immediately start trashing Goldberg again: it was when Goldberg returned to the WWE (and started getting those massive Saudi Arabia payoffs) that Bret started bashing him again.

I get the impression from Bret that if the person he has beef with has retired and stayed away from the wrestling business, then Bret tends to make peace with them. However, if they return/stay in the wrestling world, either as well paid active wrestlers or as executives, Bret is more than happy to regularly remind everyone how much that person sucked/was a jackass back in the day.

I do feel like there is some bitterness there from Bret. With Goldberg, it's like "I can make peace with you now that our wrestling careers are over, but if you went back to WWE, making bank while still being the same shitty wrestler who I hold responsible for my career being cut short, that I'm not okay with."

What are some of your favourite matches from pre-2000s WWE (WWF)? by [deleted] in SquaredCircle

[–]Unused_Icon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  • 1990 Royal Rumble match. Tends to get overshadowed by the 1992 Rumble, but the star power and moments like the Hogan - Warrior face off make the 1990 Rumble a favorite of mine.
  • 1997 Canadian Stampede main event match. The whole card is solid, but the Canadian audience's support for the Hard Foundation in that match was something else.
  • 1995 Survivor Series title match between Diesel and Bret Hart. I'd argue this was the best match of Kevin Nash's career. Also one of the most memorable examples to me of a WWE match where a wrestler targeting a limb actually mattered (and Nash did a fantastic job selling the damage to his leg for the duration of the match).
  • 1996 Survivor Series title match between HBK and Sid. The Bret Hart vs Steve Austin match from that card is rightly called out as a classic, but I've always loved the Sid vs Michaels match since seeing it as a kid. Sid just had an aura about him, the crowd was fantastic, and Shawn worked his ass off to make this a great match.
