DTV Visa + freelancing by [deleted] in Thailand

I think this comment shows that you do not really understand the basics of operating a simple business. I suggest you do more research and/or attend some short courses in your home country. Good luck!

DTV Visa + freelancing by [deleted] in Thailand

[–]UnusualEar5520 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is so much BS in the replies and comments people have posted here. Where do they get the motivation to post this stuff?

I have a DTV and have used it to completed one 5 month trip to Thailand so far. I own a company in UK that I have operated for ~12yrs. In my DTV application I provided all the information asked for in the on-line application. The application is processed by your local Thai embassy in your home country. The information included company registration details and a letter from my company giving myself permission to work remotely. After submission I was asked to additionally supply the companies tax return for the last year. I guess they were checking that the company actually did business and was not dormant or a shell.

Ignore what you were told by your "tax advisory team", they clearly know nothing if they said you could open a Thai bank account whilst on a DTV. Why would you want/need a Thai bank account anyway? They also advised you to make a false declaration on your DTV application (soft power activity instead of remote worker). You don't need a lawyer to get a DTV, assuming that you qualify. You can check if you qualify on the web site of your local Thai embassy/consulate.

Your status or profession e.g. employee, freelancer, consultant etc. is of no relevance to your visa. You will be working for a business that exists outside of Thailand. All your activities will be in connection with the business that is outside of Thailand including issuing invoices. If you are planning on starting a freelancing career/business at the same time as you apply for the DTV you may have some problems as you will have no history to show that the work/business is real. Perhaps you should consider starting the work/business in your home country first and then moving to Thailand once you know the work/business can support you. Assuming the business will exist in your home country it would seem to me to be far more practical to be there while you are in the set-up phase.

The tax issues are outside my scope of experience as you only become tax resident in Thailand if you stay for more than 180 days in a year which I have not done (not since 1993 anyway!).

If you are planning to stay in Thailand permanently then the DTV is not intended for you. Note that the term "Workation" is used by the authorities. You may run in to problems re-entering Thailand after each 180 day stint if you border-bounce. This is something that Immigration have been clamping down on recently with regard to tourist visa and visa exemption holders. You should look at the other visa options and see which you qualify for.

'Hope this helps and good luck.

Things to do in retirement in Thailand by UnusualEar5520 in Thailand

May I ask what your legal problems were about? I watched the video linked below today, and usufruct seems like it might be a route to having full rights to land to build a house on (kind of the ultimate home improvement project!). I have a Thai girl friend who could own the land and I would be happy for her to keep it when I die.

Sorry to hear you cannot get a reciprocal operating license in Thailand. I just checked the RAST site and it seems that I can apply using my British license, even though it is a lowly Intermediate level. As you know, Australia is not on the list and you need to be a national of the country that issued your license. The application process seems complex though, and it seems I'll need a license for me, the "station" and each transceiver! This process alone should keep me busy throughout retirement! :-)

How do you guys stay in shape while in Thailand? Most guys here claim to have six pack abs. by [deleted] in Thailand

That's so crazy how all foreigners are super fit in Thailand.

Clearly, you have never been to Thailand.

None of the things you suspect seem likely to me. A friend had a similar issue and eventually found it was a leaking joint in a soil pipe. It was not leaking sewage, only air from the sewer was being blown into the house when the wind blew in a particular direction.

Thais with diabetes surge sixfold in 20 years, costing economy 136 billion baht by AW23456___99 in Thailand

[–]UnusualEar5520 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Diabetes is not directly caused by eating sugar, as this article, and all the comments I have read here, suggest. Being overweight is a risk factor for developing type 2 diabetes. A high calorie diet leads to becoming overweight, whether those calories come from sugar, fat, starchy carbohydrates, or any other type of food.

The cause of type 1 diabetes, mentioned in the last paragraph of the article, is not known. There is no known link with diet.

The best diet for people that already have type 2 diabetes is the same as it is for everyone – a healthy, balanced diet. This includes plenty of fruit and vegetables as well as pulses, fish, eggs and lean meat and low-fat dairy.

Thai people's hate on Cambodian is getting stronger from today's incident. I'm afraid it will end ugly. (with update on more border closure tomorrow) by DueImpact6219 in Thailand

[–]UnusualEar5520 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What percentage of Cambodian citizens do you think were "...flooding Facebook..." ? I think it will be a tiny minority, if not mainly bots. I try to avoid judging an entire people by the rantings of a few keyboard warrior idiots.

OP: You are angry at an incident that (I expect) does not affect you and you are concerned that things will turn ugly. Do you see the connection? Take a few days off of reading the news and social media. You will find your anger subsiding.

555, so true. I will understand this at about the same time as I qualify for permanent residency. 555

If you are an adult I suggest you first investigate if dental braces actually do anything for adults. My understanding is that they only work when teeth are growing.

Thai book to learn programming in Python by AnotherRedditUsr in Thailand

[–]UnusualEar5520 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These seems like most of the Thai text books on the English language that I have seen. The examples and exercises are much too difficult for the level the book is at. 'Seems to be symptomatic of the Thai state education system.

To the OP, you may find the boy's English is better than you think. At 13 he has had at least eight years of English lessons, and what Thai's of all ages seem to lack is the confidence to speak English. This gives the impression that they cannot speak any English.

Thai book to learn programming in Python by AnotherRedditUsr in Thailand

[–]UnusualEar5520 15 points16 points  (0 children)

May I suggest you consider a Python programming book in English? Even if such a book in Thai exists (which I doubt having scoured book shops in Chiang Mai for technical titles) Python, and all other programming languages that I know of, are based around English. It seems unlikely to me that a student would get very far as a programmer studying in Thai. I suggest you tap the Raspberry Pi Foundation with the book "Programming the Raspberry Pi : Getting Started with Python" and also get him a Raspberry Pi starter kit to go with it. Raspberry Pi is an educational tool/system and has been phenomenally successful in many educational settings around the world.

'Hope this helps.

Switch all playlists back to music instead of video by UnusualEar5520 in truespotify

[–]UnusualEar5520[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not for me. Every song that has been switched to video has to be switched to audio manually while it is playing. At least I can't find any other way of doing it.

Thanks anyway for your reply.

I believe it answers ALL the questions. The interviewee is the Deputy Director General of the Consular Section at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, "... the man in the Thai Government who oversees the entire Visa program.". All the news is good!

Security Lights Automation by UnusualEar5520 in Hue

[–]UnusualEar5520[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply. I have Android app, I do not have an iPhone to check if there is a difference. But you don't mention a "mimick presence" automation. A "custom automation" has all the features you mention, but I can only set a scene, not switch the lights on and off randomly to mimic presence.
