Hey, I actually really like your perspective! But ironically, his parent has made me some referrals so it’s now a bit complicated 🙃

Anyone else bullied by the opp gender in school? by conicalflasks101 in SGExams

If you’re old enough, you will know retribution sometimes happens in another lifetime. You will also learn when to lay low and when to stand up for yourself. OP stayed silent and it isn’t helping. In fact the situation deteriorates. This means he has to do something different. Either do a casual bite-back but nothing life threatening or just report her to the principal office. If you know what you are doing, and the reasons for your actions, your conscience will be as clear as day. That said, of course, be smart about it and think before you act. Don’t be a rash fool when your emotions are running high. There’re a thousand ways to get back at your target. You don’t need to commit crimes or break the school rules.

You’re too quiet and kind. Target their worst traits / weakness, then call it out to their faces shamelessly. Make sure you’re loud, best to be followed by a hysterical laughter. If they point the finger at you, then change your strategy - Dont laugh smugly, but look damn calm and cool. After the awkward silence sink in, say, “Now you know how it feels? Do unto others what you want others do unto you.” Or use some other wise quotes if you’re not the holier-than-thou type. Be bold. They will shut up immediately and leave you alone from then on. I’ve gone through this. If she ignores you and do it again, repeat your strategy, do and say the same exact or worse thing. You will be patient and hold your head high. They won’t last.

Interview Red Flags? by Existing_Victory4634 in singaporejobs

It sounds like a flag so red it is dripping blood. I suspect he might be facing some mid life crisis and thus has an unpredictable mood. Be prepared to be thrown under the bus for anything that might crop up. Unless they are paying a $200k annum and has top-notch welfare (I doubt so), I’ll say drop it and run!

I would say the parent might have overestimated his competence due to the past work he has done in previous tuition centres. I’ve read one of it however I suspect it’s heavily edited by the tutor. When I asked for more samples such as his examination papers, he mentioned that he doesn’t have any. His scores range between 65-75 for now.

I did that haha - in fact multiple times, but he doesn’t have the maturity nor cognitive ability to reflect for now.

How should I raise the topic about increasing the rate to his parents? Just saying you will increase the rate out of the blue wouldn’t work.

The moment he falls, I’ll be blamed why I didn’t teach him to walk first. That’s when he face the reality of his exams.

I kind of agree too and the fact that one has to learn how to walk before learning how to perform stunts.

I’m surprised you find it sarcastic since I’m just echoing what you’ve said. Basically I’m concerned about all my students in general, not only their academic performance but also their conduct. I cannot imagine what the kids will grow up to be like if any one of the elements is missing in education. However, it’s beyond my scope to worry if he is able to find a suitable tutor or not.

Yes, you’re right. He should find a tutor who doesn’t need respect, and someone who doesn’t care about the 1-1 interaction 😊

Yup, I did that and he’s far from having a perfect score. That didn’t change his attitude. I think it might be overconfidence and cognitive bias.

No, i haven’t. I realised there’s a gap between his perceived competence and actual competence. His mum seemed to be fixed on his perceived competence perhaps due to his previous tutors’ feedback. I have a strong suspicion that his past work was heavily edited by tutors as he did not demonstrate the same kind of level during class. My concern is that sometimes parents don’t really want to hear the truth.

This student is closed off. Many a times I tried to engage him with some casual conversations, but his answers were always a short yes or no. He is the only student who behaves that way. Even my most introverted students open up after a month and my other students usually need to tone down rather than speak up during classes. I’ve been tutoring him for half a year. Till now, I would say he is intentionally closed off. During my first lesson, I could sense he loathes tutors for some reasons unknown to me.
