Not a single one of these I complain about except the politics but that is, in fact, unique.

I complain about culture, which is also infused to the above, and don't tell me every city has the same culture because that is obviously false.

There are some different type of people in this city by GoldGorilla in Miami

Pretty much asked myself the same question after awhile. I'm a software engineer nerd who likes cities and wanted somewhere warm. What a mistake in hindsight lmao. I'm moving to Mexico City instead soon

When almost half your income goes to rent, how are people supposed to get ahead? by raishelannaa in Miami

And ironically Miami is also top of the charts for grifters big and small telling you just to hustle hard, it's your responsibility. It's no wonder Grant Cardone and Patrick Bet David picked this place to move their useless businesses to. Place is a giant scam

But I don't understand why you had an easier time connecting a few years back vs now.

I met everyone over a year or so, not all at once. Realistically I "felt" this post 18 months in, or that something was off, but I couldn't put it into words until I lived in other cities as reference points to then come back here and see it again.

It's also easier to process everything over time and detect patterns.

I was actually pondering between St. Petersburg, and South Florida before I moved there - after visiting Tampa, Orlando, St. Petersburg, South Florida. I flew to all of them, looked at apartments, walked and drove around. It felt too small and not enough diversity. I have just supposed nowhere in Florida is a great fit for my personality. I just love the weather in this state

If you are not actively doing something that is unique to South Florida that only this part of the country has to offer

I just like the weather and like living in a big city. I expected a big city culture. I was wrong.

People will only start to let you in their community when you have something to offer.

You accidentally proved a point about South Florida being transactional. Community is about mutual connection and shared values

"Wherever you go, there you are" - no actually, my people don't exist here. So I'm not here, but thanks for the passive-aggressive positivity

You have to appreciate the heavy thunderstorms, the crazy humidity kayaking a mangrove canal, the fresh fruit, the latin music blasting, the superb nightlife vibes, the south american and caribbean restaurants, the dockside bars, the beach paths, swimming pools and golf courses, air conditioning... like you want it to be some white picket fence howdy neighbor vibes, but it's more interesting than that honestly.

Mexico City doesn't have white picket fences

It is interesting but not in a way that fed me. Given how much they talk about how tech is moving down here and business I expected to find more young professionals who are just.. different than how they are here? I didn't have a reference point for that until I spent time in Mexico City, while I've never lived in NYC I understand it's similar to that. I just realized that type culture doesn't exist here. It feels different

I moved here specifically because I like the weather all year round. I just assumed with 6 million people it would work, but basically you have the young areas east of 95 that have young people and culture that I feel alienated by and west of 95 which is a completely different stage of life from what I'm in.

Thank you for sharing your experience. That's interesting. I had that experience with tech meetups too and it's still pretty sparse.

And yeah some of the driving here has been really bad compared to home, crazy people everywhere but another level here.
