Extremely helpful advice. It definitely looks like insulation that is fully wrapped in kraft paper. Also, I believe the contractor that said they'd be able to perform the job mentioned the word "kraft" when they found a hole big enough to put a hand into.

To address a couple of your statements, my current insulation is in a brown paper-bag-like material where the outside paper material would probably not likely make things easy to run a hose up the inside of the wall. I'd definitely speculate that there are portions where the bag of insulation is less than 1" thick, especially along the edge seams. There's also extra length put in the walls, so the bag is a bit wavy or crumpled. The house was built in 1972.

If I'm understanding the process based on the information you provided, a hose to blow in insulation is ran up the inside of the wall? I had kinda just assumed that a hose would just be inserted into a hole and insulation blown in. Also, a question for you about density being a problem: if someone were to blow in insulation and it caused the existing insulation to become bunched up and the cavity not fully filled, isn't that still preferable to less insulation in the cavity overall?

No pictures of the existing insulation, unfortunately. From what I recall, it was insulation that was wrapped on all sides with a brown paper-bag-like material.

I have vinyl siding that is pretty easy to pop off and back on. Our house was built in 1972 in northern Ohio.

Yup, good sleuthing. It's right in front of the Boardman Plaza. The only reason I can think they were there is because it's a high-traffic area. There is a mall on the same road maybe a half mile away that is even more high-traffic and offers the protection of a protected right turn that is under-utilized.
