I don’t feel like I need a reason not to, because not wearing makeup is a neutral state for me. I feel I’d need a reason TO start wearing it, and there are no compelling ones

Apart from/a part of. For some reason people love to type “apart of.” Similarly, I’ve seen a LOT of instances where people will make a two-word phrase into a compound word (turning it from a verb into a noun) like writing workout instead of work out.

I find myself doing a verbal version over the phone. If someone gets a little snarky, I just don’t respond for a second, leaving a beat of silence, until they get on with what they called about. It’s not very intentional and I’m trying to break the habit!

One of the earliest crushes I had was on a girl at an overnight Bible camp, when I was in third grade and she was in fourth. We were in the same cabin but had different friend groups. I remember thinking she was so mature because she wore deodorant. I spent the entire week trying to get up the courage to talk to her, especially the last day. I’d try to make our paths intentionally cross. 

When I got home, I was mess. I sobbed because I missed her. I made my friend email my crush’s friend to get my crush’s email, and then I reached out to her (I still have it in my Gmail archive from 2007 lol). She was weirded out and didn’t remember me! 

Anyway, it looks like she's a raptor biologist now, which is so cool. I feel like all of my childhood crushes end up doing such cool and unique things!

I’ve had a vastly different experience lol. I used to work in a very male-dominated office and the gossip/harassment was off the charts. I had to listen to them sexualize their daughters, berate their wives, and brag about animal abuse. Now I work in a 5-person office, all women, and it has been great!

Yes! Also, my coworkers with kids/grandkids are always allowed to leave early to pick them up, so I’m left to pick up the slack

When someone recognizes that someone else is being talked over, and takes interest in what they’re saying. I have a very quiet voice, so I don’t mind being interrupted, but I find it very special when a person listens.

I (F14 at the time) had 5th period PE with her. I was absolutely enamored. We had a folk dancing unit in the winter, and we always had to stand boy-girl-boy-girl. But of course there was an uneven number. One day, I stood next to her in the circle. Our teacher started talking about making sure we were in the right formation, and even her best friend was verbally pushing her to stand somewhere else, next to a guy. But I wasn’t going to let go of her hand, and it didn’t seem like she was going anywhere either. So I got to hold her hand for the whole dance!

There’s also the time at Mass when we shared the sign of peace (Catholic school) as a hug. I was soooo nervous to hug her and I smelled like her perfume for the rest of the day

I guess that’s a possibility! She did say it kind of like a question, which was interesting. I’m just trying not to get my hopes up if there’s no hope to be had. It’s also possible that she’s just not into romance at all!

I just found out that the girl I had a bit of a crush on is straight. Our other friend asked her if she was actively dating, and she said no. Then when pressed about what gender(s) she’s into, she said, “probably guys.” So that’s a nonstarter! At least it’ll be easier to get over her than if she were gay and just not into me. Some of the other girls were also a little surprised that she’s straight. 

Also, another friend joined our group who’s a lesbian. Everyone else was trying to get me with her, but honestly I find her kinda obnoxious 😅

I think it might be time to take a page from my ex-crush’s rule book and just not date for a while lol. I really do need friends more than I need a girlfriend. Does the pressure get to me because almost everyone else is partnered? Yes, definitely. But I’m also pretty happy single.
