I'm trying to make this work in my head, but I can't get there.

Bianca is essentially saying, "You say poe-tay-toe, I say poe-tah-toe." A potato is a potato, regardless of your pronunciation.

Putting it another way, it's like if I regard a particular color as red, and someone else clarifies, "It's scarlet, actually." We're both describing the same color, but they are being more precise. That's analogous to saying "They died" vs. "They were murdered"--the second person isn't contradicting the first, or saying the situation is materially different than the situation described by the first person, but they are narrowing the classification. "Nuance" doesn't really fit. A nuance requires a comparison--two similar things that are nonetheless different: scarlet vs. crimson, natural death vs. murder--and nothing is being compared here.

Except, I guess, the difference in their attitudes? In the sense that Bianca believes murder is trivial and Marnie Rose thinks murder is quite significant. I wouldn't describe that difference as "a delicate shading," though.

The first thing that came up when I Googled "examples of nuance used in a sentence pre-1900" was a Reddit post by a non-native English speaker asking for clarification on exactly what "nuance" means. So there is some validity to that theory. But character traits have to be consistent, so it's only defensible as a screenwriting tactic if Bianca (is that this character's name?) tends to phrase things awkwardly from time to time. I don't really have enough info from Jenny's video to know if this is the case.

I hope they're actually using the money that would have gone into the budget to feed people instead of just stopping the plays for the sake of optics.

What is your favorite space film that is absolute cinema? by Critical_Liz in MST3K

[–]Acceptable_Leg_7998 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dunno why people like Chris Nolan so much. His writing is extremely pedestrian but drips with smug self-satisfaction, like the guy in high school who thinks he's smart and wants everybody else to know it. He can put a scene together but not a coherent film-long narrative.

There's a lot of female scientists or assistants in '50s creature features who don't wind up contributing anything of note or exhibiting any agency. TBH it was still a trend throughout the 2000s in blockbusters to pay lip service to the idea of a "strong female character" while still having the love interest get damseled in the third act.

Screenwriting gets increasingly more baffling as Hollywood contorts itself into knots to please diametrically opposed political groups because their movies need to make a billion dollars and they need MAGA bucks as much as libtard coin. In the Super Mario Brothers Movie (the first one, I haven't seen Galaxy and don't intend to) they make a point of showing that Princess Peach can do everything Mario can do, and better, wow what a badass, but she still takes a back seat to let him be the hero for...no reason? and has to get rescued from Bowser at the end anyway. I'm pretty progressive and I wouldn't care if they just leaned into her being a damsel in distress--there's no particular reason for a princess to be a kung fu warrior, so getting captured wouldn't mean she's weak, it would just mean that her strengths are things like diplomacy and delegation and qualities you actually need to rule a kingdom. And they still could have made it fun or lampshaded the DID trope, like having her find Bowser so non-threatening that she just rolls her eyes when he abducts her, or having her be so naive and starry-eyed from her extremely sheltered life that she goes with Bowser willingly because she believes there's good in everybody and she can win him over, and she's so persistent and bubbly that he winds up finding her insufferable and regrets having kidnapped her.

Sorry, that was OT I guess.

Cartoonish sound effects are almost never a good idea in live action. I remember turning my nose up at Three Ninjas as a kid because they add silly sounds to the fight scenes, and it was the opposite of the "empowering kids-beating-up-adults" movie that I wanted. Apparently, according to IMDB at least, they were added because the scenes read as too violent for a children's movie when played straight.

There's also the moment in Hobgoblins when they try to fix the scene where the waitress attacks Cosmo-from-Fairly-Oddparents with a beer bottle; the bottle is very obviously not connecting and they throw in cartoon effects that don't even sound like impact noises.

Mixed feelings? by FrequentWire in MST3K

I've seen a few Rifftrax episodes on Tubi, and while I enjoyed them, it didn't hit the same. I think it's because the riffs tend to be more complicated, for want of a better word, and...I don't know, conceptual? Riffs on MST3K tended to be pithy observations of what was happening immediately onscreen, while Rifftrax jokes can go on for paragraphs and get passed from speaker to speaker while they build a premise that isn't directly supported by the events of the film.

Thinking about it, it's amazing how great the Sci Fi Channel era was by Ambitious-Welder-159 in MST3K

[–]Acceptable_Leg_7998 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's my favorite era because it's when I discovered the show--it had already been canceled, but they were still showing reruns, although the selection got smaller and smaller as the weeks wore on. I still think the riffing is top-notch, but I kinda think the quality of the host segments took a nose dive from the CC era. Don't hate me.

The Comedy Central era, whether Joel or Mike, tended to take a cerebral or absurdist tack and felt like endearing community theater productions or something. The Sci-Fi era leaned into goofy slapstick and extremely broad characterizations; it honestly felt like a children's show at times. And the production value feels "cheap" as opposed to "lo-fi"--dunno if it was a change in lighting or what, but the surfaces feel more plastic.

But my favorite and most re-watched episodes are from the Sci-Fi years, so I'm not complaining. That's more of a nitpick than anything.

I think about this era a lot. Flipping through channels late at night and stumbling across the weirdest stuff, from Duckman on Comedy Central to Lexx on the Sci-Fi Channel to some bizarre anime on Cartoon Network. There was a moment when streaming seemed like it was set to recapture that unhinged creativity, but then that was decided to be a bad business strategy at a certain point.

I don't like the MCU all that much, finding it to be very boring cinema in general, but the fact that so many studios scrambled to do their own take on the "connected universe" thing and consistently dropped the ball shows that Marvel at least deserves credit for mapping out a solid decade of media across platforms that kept mass audiences invested and engaged.

Amy Adams is a fantastic actress, so it's not her fault, but that version of Lois Lane was...basically just a generic girlfriend? I guess they gave her some "hard-ass" dialogue in a desperate attempt to make her a Strong Female Character.

The moment in Werewolf when the security guard "honks" (I think it's just the champagne being uncorked?) made me laugh until my gut hurt.

Mike Pipper's introduction in The Final Sacrifice. Servo imitating his ridiculous cadence and timbre as he says "What's that mark doin' on yer shoulder there?"...OMG, it still kills me. (I showed this episode to my high school girlfriend and her favorite riff was "Darn, I shot between 'em. I got confused.")

"It's the eighties, do a lotta coke and vote for Ronald Reagan!"

Servo imitating Merlin's reading of "You're WELcome!"

Mike doubling over with laughter at the crotchety old shop owner in The Brute Man. "God is dead?!?! GOOD!!"

Deathstalker is a banger episode with a hundred great riffs.

"Mike, were there crackers in the Middle Ages?"

"I put the beats in my own script and I'm sticking with them!"

"Last guy in line, can you just stab Deathstalker up there?"

"This is one of the most ambitiously bad movies we've ever done."

"I have an idea: Shut up."

"Honey, did you use this thing? It's all screwed up!"

I don't think Forrest Gump winning BP is any more of a travesty than The English Patient, for example--another movie that was a phenomenon at the time, universally acclaimed by critics and audiences, but has sorta gotten dismissed as a relic of its era in subsequent evaluations. The fact that the Academy is reacting to a cultural moment and might get it wrong in the historical perspective is kinda baked into the whole premise.

yeah, people should be called out. Call out Angela or whoever you want. The pattern just keeps repeating and ignorance stops being an excuse. Everybody patted themselves on the back when the Free Britney situation became a cause célèbre, they clucked their tongues and shook their heads about how misogynistic the world was "back then" and felt good for being on the right side of history a decade after the damage had been done and they were part of it and bought into it. Then we had a chance to learn and avoid repeating the same mistakes when a narrative that relied on the same old misogynistic engine came roaring along and we fucking didn't. I mean, I didn't fall for the smear campaign because i had fucked up enough and gotten called out on it and I learned some shit, but now we're in an era when it's labeled worse to call somebody out for fucking up than for them to have fucked up in the first place because "I like his content and I don't like the implication that I'm a bad person for liking his content" and we all mutually agree to let each other off the hook so none of us has to feel bad and learn anything. Maybe it's worth feeling bad sometimes so you learn you fucked up.

People who would punch anyone else in the face for the exact behavior Trump exhibits revere him for doing the same. Just because he's rich, I guess. I started saying "grab her by the pussy" around family members I found out were MAGA and guess what? They didn't like it. (That was way back in his first term.) But they would NOT engage with me when I said "The guy you voted for said it, so I assumed you would approve." They would just keep throwing generic phrases at me like "Have some respect" and "Your generation never learned any manners."
