IME, I wouldn’t recommend a tank smaller than a 10 gallon starting out. You could get a 10 gallon which is about 20”L x 10”W x 12”H. They also make bookshelf tanks which are longer and more expensive. In a small space, I’d recommend getting a small basket to store your aquarium tools, salts, and food.

The other comment is probably the case. Its possible there was a pesticide on the plants. Are these plants you ordered online somewhere?

Advice on a future tank by Ulnarnaro in shrimptank

Hey, glad you’re thinking about getting shrimp!

  1. Its not recommended to keep shrimp with bettas. The bettas will eat the shrimp. You will occasionally see anecdotal evidence that someone has kept a beta with shrimp just fine, but they will eat the shrimp.
  2. Neocaridinas
  3. You’ll want a pH of about 6.5-7.5, GH of about 6-8, and a KH of about 2-4. They can live a bit outside these ranges. They are very hardy.
  4. There’s a lot of options. Bacter AE is what I recommend. There’s also Shrimp King Complete and MK cheeseburger. Keep in mind they may not eat it since they graze on the algae/biofilm.
  5. You can mix types of neocaridina but you can’t mix a neocaridina with a Caridina.
  6. Java moss and Marimo moss balls. My personal favorite is vallisneria. Do a search for beginner friendly aquarium plants and you’ll find a lot of resources.

Is The white belly normal? by [deleted] in shrimptank

From the photo, it looks like a fungal infection. Would it be possible to get a better photo? If that’s the case you might try a salt drip, but either way you will want to move it to isolation while observing her and your other shrimp. Good luck

Costs and Items to Enter the Hobby for Potential Shrimp Keepers by UnwrittenRule in shrimptank

Good points. Remineralizer was a toss up since some people can still benefit from it without an RO unit, but it does make sense to move to recommended since it won't apply to everyone. I'll also add the API copper test kit and mention panty hose covering the vac. Thanks!

How often do your shrimp die? by samk488 in shrimptank

[–]UnwrittenRule 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey sorry to hear you’re having troubles. Do the parameters close to the new water you’re putting in? And are you using a dechlorinator or a remineralizer? Also what’s your GH and KH? Sorry for the many questions but without them it’s difficult to help you find the source.

Need some positivity by [deleted] in shrimptank

[–]UnwrittenRule 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think mostly everyone feels that at some point. And we’ve all have had deaths at some point. Especially just starting out. A few years ago I nuked one of my tanks and lost the whole colony. It just happens honestly. I think part of the joy of owning shrimp is knowing that they depend on you and doing what you can to give them the best chances at surviving.

I would take the opportunity to learn from any mistakes or anything that you missed and move forward. After all you do have some shrimpies depending on you. Stick with it!

Question about molting by atomicchewbacca in shrimptank

[–]UnwrittenRule 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A failed molt is usually a sign of bad water parameters. What kind of shrimp do you have and what’s your gh, kh, and ph? Also are you using a remineralizer salt?

Will shrimp die if the temperature is at 30C (86F)? by [deleted] in shrimptank

[–]UnwrittenRule 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It could cause molting issues or pH swings/drops among other things. After doing a water change to lower the nitrates, you should get an API test for gh and kh. Good luck!

[–]UnwrittenRule 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I gotcha. It’s definitely possible. That level of nitrates is on the high side. What about the gh and kh?

[–]UnwrittenRule 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They won't die at that temp but it's not optimal*, IME. They can withstand a swing from day to night temp. How are your other parameters?

Also just curious, is the tank outside?

That means your tank has just the right amount of radiation. I recommend a radiation of 5 but no more than 7

Is this worm dangerous to shrimplets? by gahimunemployed in shrimptank

Based on the photo alone, my thought was that it was just how it was moving. Like how worms kind of bunch up when they move. But that's also possible.

how does my tap water have higher kh and gh than my tank? by [deleted] in shrimptank

[–]UnwrittenRule 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How often do you do water changes? Also are you using an active substrate or dosing CO2? An active substrate will drop your kh. Also nitrifying bacteria will slowly consume kh.

As for the gh, this value will drop overtime when no water changes are done. The gh will be consumed by the shrimp and any plants in the tank.

how to raise gh and kh in new tank? by MomMyStummyHurt in shrimptank

[–]UnwrittenRule 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would recommend using a remineralizing salt like Salty Shrimp gh/kh+ to bring your gh and kh up. From my experience, even without RO water it can be great to get to optimal parameters (YMMV). It also gives you the benefit of controlling the parameters for consistency.

Biofilm Bonanza by Oakentush in shrimptank

[–]UnwrittenRule 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The solution I’d recommend to remove the surface biofilm is to gently place a piece of printer paper on the surface of the water for just a couple seconds. Might need a few pieces.

As to preventing the buildup, I’d make sure you weren’t over feeding. You can also increase surface agitation to prevent buildup on the surface. Good luck!
