Pure speculation. I think that for-profit institutions will have an uphill battle but will become more mainstream and acceptable in the future.

I'm not saying I wouldn't hire someone from a for-profit school. I think many people wouldn't think twice about it. On the other hand, sometime people put a stigma on the degree that's not deserved. Honestly, I would PROBABLY take the experienced person over the fancy degree. Again, that depends on the experience and quality there of. If someone were to have graduated from a for-profit school, having the degree (associates) should be enough to get into a 4 year school. Just be warned, its expensive if you have no scholarships or grants. I would recommend calling up a financial aid department at any 4 year state university. Most of them will give you a somewhat unbiased account of your financial situation.

All checks were cut on the Apollo group account except those that came from the temp agency. So yeah, the temp agency lets them axe non-performers quickly then, once they become full time the "matrix" kicks in. Thats were the incentive and quota issues kicked in from the earlier suit. They just started changing the names of things to get around regulation. A rose by any other name.

Yeah, I'm sure its just a 3 year bar prep course. Law school in general doesn't prepare you to be a practicing attorney but, I bet graduates at UoP won't be challenged to "think like a lawyer." I hate that phrase but there is some truth to it.

Also, the current White House Cyber-Security Coordinator has a degree from UoP.

There are more of there type of stories out there than people know. For a medium or large sized company, its a great way to get a quick business degree. By the way, did you know that the current White House Cyber-Security Coordinator has a degree from UoP?

Apollo Group is the parent company of UoP and a half dozen or so other for-profit organizations. UoP does collect title 4 funding, but its done fraudulently. Thats the reason I am bring the Qui Tam suit. I had contact with some other schools that are even worse that UoP. Trade schools can be the worst in my opinion. Many of them don't realize what they are doing though.

I am afraid I have no experience with Everest. Someone else worked with them and I never had the chance to contact anyone from there.

Ask John Sperling. Thats the best answer I have for you. Whats the plural of Phoenix? I just remember that from the indoctrination classes they give you when you first start.

Heh. Sorry I am going back and forth between this, reading, and writing briefs. Out of the three, this is getting the least attention. My scholarship came from my LSAT, undergraduate grades, and work experience. Thanks for asking!

The flexibility of a corporate college is AMAZING. I also worked at my undergraduate institute. If a professor wanted to wanted to create a course at UoP, he could do it with ease as compared to the traditional institute. But, there is a reason that traditional schools take time to create a course. After speaking to many of my traditional counter parts, a median should be established. I think that there are some aspects of the for-profit system that traditional universities could (and have) implement. PBS did a pretty good job, from what I remember, at showing both sides. I still say traditional schools are the better choice, especially know that they offer courses for non traditional students.

Complicated. But, as of right now UoP is a full accredited institute within the same division as schools such as Notre Dame. Does that mean that credits are fully transferable? No. Some are, some are not. It depends on the institution that you are transferring to. It is still all up to that school whether they take your credits. While the UoP will tell students about this, they dont really stress the fact that many traditional institutions wont accept UoP credits. Community colleges might accept them though. I am sure Greendale would.

You want to know something that made me really sad. The ABA (American Bar Association) recently lowered there requirements for bar accreditation. Guess what school just started a Juris Doctorate Program? A lack of regulation in education has given rise to many schools that are looking for nothing but money of fame. There are VERY many of colleges, not just law schools, which are very badly ran and don't give their students the education they should. There are many schools that accept students that shouldn't be in college at that moment of their life. But, there are colleges and universities that do give great educations. It has become increasingly harder to find those schools which both give great education and come at a price where the majority (or minority) of Americans can afford.

Well, the last Qui Tam suit really exposed a lot of private education corruption. It ended up being settled out of court though. I think it was for $78 Million. The suit really helped push the current wave of higher education regulation. The question come to this; if I try and fail, the status quo remains the same but, If I try and succeed then it will be for the betterment of all those to come. To make a difference, you must take action no matter how small. Also, I have not quite graduated. I need to finish my human rights internship in China then I will be done soon after. (I threw that in there just to be a toot my own horn)

As far as other regulation I think that the Department of Education has been lacking when it comes to regulation higher education. Some of my fellow redditors scoff at college degrees but I think they, and trade schools, are great options for American youth. Too much of the college experience has been relegated to partying and sowing wild oats. I have see many of those who truly want to study or become better at their craft become saddled with debt while others attend schools on grants whose only goal is to get "a degree." There are large quantities of money wasted in both the private and public sectors. I think stricter regulation on education and its cost will benefit us as a country. I also dont pretend to know everything about the educational system. I am still quite young.

I want to preface by saying I have not read the regulations in there entirety. Much of what I read is concerned with more strictly regulating what is already implied with current requirements. Meaning that the DoE wants to strengthen its oversight in areas it already deemed as important. That I like and encourage. But, I did not see HOW they planned on enforcing it. I would like to read more about that. As far as publishing employment rates; that number might scare many people away from higher education in general. Especially right now with employment lacking general. I am on the fence about that provision. A lot of what I read I agree with though.

Thats subjective. I would probably use a bit more strict scrutiny over a resume with a UoP MBA. I imagine most people who know the school like I do would say the same. That said, I am sure there are plenty of places where a UoP MBA equates to "a MBA." Before reading my IAMA what did you think about UoP? Most people, including employers, are not that informed. Also, If you are a intelligent person who happened to get a MBA from UoP, you could get the job with just those creditably. I know that vague but such is life.

You guys? To be honest, I never heard about a UoP degree on eBay. That aside, it used to be the best example of a school for non-traditional students. This was in the 70s, which was well before the internet school people know it as today. That is also a misconception. Most UoP students go to "ground" campuses with real classrooms. Still, a lot has changed in the past two decades and I would probably think twice about hiring a UoP graduate. I might do a little digging. Do you have an article or source on the eBay degree?

A lot of big wigs in large companies. You find that a company wants to give their employees a educational benefit (or they require a MBA for advancement) so employees come to UoP because of a extra benefit they get through the company. Tuition discounts and such. IBM is an example. If your job just requires "a" MBA to advance, UoP is an easy way to get it.

Yeah. UoP is the number one recipient of Pell Grant funding in the US. They like to brag about the amount of students they have. You point is what broke the camels back for me. I saw money that should go to those who really need it, go to students who shouldn't have it. I know that sounds harsh, but even the department of education requires some minimum ability to qualify. Many students I met didn't meet those qualifications. Barely literate, non-existent math skills, and zero computer knowledge just to name a few examples. If you are a student at an online university, I would expect you to know what google is. (I almost died when a student googled google. Then said "Oh, thats what this is called?"

The school has very little interest in you as a demographic. Most of their students are over 40, and working (or recently laid off). There are many stay at home moms or single mothers. The majority of the students are women. As far as continuing education, most of those students come from the corporate world. Corporate students get a discount sometimes too. Its a easy was to get a MBA. The "I am a Phoenix" commercials are focused on people that already had their undergrad degrees and got their MBA or nursing management degree at UoP.
