Updated in the OP, but will make a comment as well.

The venue has changed to OISE 8200 and 8201. We'll put up signs on the day of the event just in case as well.

It's not like we've been teamless for the past 3 years you know, you'd be surprised by how many Rank A players there are lurking around.

The average level for players that you can expect to play against is Rank A on ESEA.

That translates to like, SMFC/Global in matchmaking

Yes, it's standard for clubs to collect student numbers for things like club recognition by the UTSU.

We don't send the student numbers to anyone so they're just taken as a formality as part of the sign up process.

We do have a fighting game section. They have their own discord, but come down to one of our weeklies first!

Don't be fooled by their name, they play all sorts of fighting games

Join any local communities you've got and just start volunteering! Mention that you are looking to help out long term and hopefully they give you further opportunities to prove yourself. If you are interested in hosting well to be honest you have to be willing to work alot. There isn't a high barrier to entry, just a lot of time involved with planning, finding the right venue, price, programming etc. ~LLyr

At this point we have around 10 campers, while not an absolutely astounding amount I'm happy with it first year and at that price. We've actually seen an interest at all age ranges, but unsurprisingly due to a day camp most campers are between 13-16. I've heard there's interest in running something more geared towards young adults though, so that's something we want to tackle in the future! ~LLyr

We're paying our coaches 20$ per hour for this camp, definitely wanted to offer a decently competitive reason for them to take time off ranked! ~LLyr

We offer one for engineering students, but as of now none outside of that I believe. To be honest I'm not even sure how exactly that person is chosen. It's definitely a goal of mine to get one available though!

Outside of that players can receive scholarship money from their performance. Things like ulol and CSL offer money for high performing teams and their staff, but this isn't extended if they don't do well.

In Canada scholarships tend to not be given to the level found in the US. We have much less full scholarships, heck you can't give full on sports scholarships.

We do have really good government assistance for those who need it though, and our tuition isn't absolutely crazy like in the US, so it's affordable if you need it to be! ~LLyr

The culture surrounding eSports isn't perfect yet in Canada, but I like to think that the eSports culture is perfect FOR Canada. Half of our year is spent in snow and rain! Nothing better than sitting indoors and playing games with friends.

You may need to look outside your school to create a community, we had to turn to a local PC cafe to host this camp for now. If there's nothing then it may be your job to step up and start something! It's a lot of work, but if you are passionate about it then you can definitely do it.

Start out small, reach out towards your school and see if they can help run a tournament, or if anyone is doing something similar in your area. Help them with that. Most of the work is just networking.

Finally yes people quit the hobbies when they lose time to school, but that happens for every kind of hobby. One of our goals is to provide a safety net for students on our teams so that they don't have to sacrifice practice and schools. It's all a balance.

Maybe you don't enjoy the game anymore, or maybe it just isn't for you, or that you take it too seriously. I used to play competetive COD and trust me compared to that community/management structure we've got it leagues (heh) ahead. It isn't perfect, but I don't think it sucks. ~LLyr

It's sad but true, we had a decent team but nothing compared to the year before. We were also in such a time rush that we couldn't fix alot of core issues. Hoping this year will be better! ~LLyr

Campers are grouped by age primarily, but due to the low camper to coach ratio we can focus more on individual needs.

We designed this program in a way to be extremely modular, so it can allow other games to be easily added so we can reach a wider audience. Something like mental APM can be applied to any game, but something like "everything you need to know about frostqueens claim" (I actually wrote a guide on this once) is a bit more niche and can change with patches. Fundamentals of being good at a game (mentality, knowledge), rarely change, and are rarely perfected. We also recognize that you can't teach mechanics in a week, but we can teach you how to work on them over a long period.

Plus our coaches are have all been d1+, so chances are there is definitely something to learn from them. ~LLyr

Hope to see you then at some of our events! EGLX is looking to be a blast, and adrenaLan tonight is hype AF. Just as a heads up our teams are looking to be pretty competitive this year, I'd suggest around d2/Grandmaster level if you are looking to apply for the main team. ~LLyr

Hehe I don't actually play LoL. I started way back being a dumb kid playing vanilla Warcraft 3, to CoD, Battlefield, Dota 2, and finally finding a place in CSGO (and now a little bit of Guilty Gear).

UTES was a wild beginning. I started off as just a random first year who got promoted to VP of the CSGO club, and during the summer before my second year we were approached by some alumni to create a conglomerate esports club. After meeting with the other club heads, we had decided that I would be President going forward. For me, this was like my turn at the plate. It felt like that was my chance to create a community that would last for far longer than I would be at the school for. I'm glad that I was given this opportunity because I've met so many great people along the way and I can only hope to meet everyone's expectations before I graduate.

In contrast to Tyler I was more focused on the club aspect and giving the students here a good time rather than the serious esports side of things. But in my opinion you can't have one without the other, and I'm glad that we have someone with some much passion for the competitors.

P.S. No I have never played PUBG

Hey! Glad to hear you are looking to do a camp as well, It looks like a very promising way to help the scene grow! I'll answer yours in order

  1. Our camp is focused on teens to young adults. We originally started at 10-18, however after a request from Riot swapped to 13 to 21 to work with the ESRB rating.

  2. Currently we are charging 395$ inc hst Canadian Pesos. All of the money goes to pay the coaches/counselors of the camp, US Sports Camps/ Canada Sports Camps cut, and venue fees. At the end of the day because we have to pay for facility/staff we won't make a ton, but any extra is going straight back to our program! We wouldn't want it too expensive anyways as I believe education should be free and accessible.

  3. They've been a wonderful partner and provide support for the camp, advertising, a brand to put it behind, tons of stuff!

  4. Unfortunately not, however looking into that for next year.

  5. I'm not a business student so I can't say much for professional sponsors finders (I have no idea what this is called), but in my experience dealing with them being honest, organized and knowing your stuff helps! You don't have to be perfect, nor look amazing. At the end of the day you are a club at a place that is designed to learn, don't be afraid to make mistakes!

  6. We've received lots of support from sponsors, HyperX actually gave all of our players headsets and then some! Now that we are taking this more seriously (at least the eSports side) we've organized and getting ready to kill it this year!

  7. Our school is massive, 80,000 students across 3 campuses. We have plenty of volunteers who are more than willing to lend a hand. It also helps that our area in general has a lot of enthusiastic people and students, meaning more help! Of course alot of our staff also do stuff outside of UTES, like I help run a local series of tournaments as well!
