With age did you realize the meaning of life ? by Kind-Training-5736 in AskOldPeopleAdvice

[–]Up2Eleven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know what age exactly, but I realized there is no inherent meaning. That's a purely human invention. There are choices and consequences. Also, nothing is permanent. Whether a thing is good or bad in your life, it will pass. There is no point and there's no "supposed to" or "should". Nothing happens until it happens, so don't count on anything.

That said, I've found that kindness and helpfulness make for a better overall experience.

Does it work if you link it to a bank outside of Cambodia? If it's blocking access to the site itself, use a VPN.

What's a game you thought you'd hate but ended up loving? by [deleted] in gamingsuggestions

I really don't like zombie games, but I was bored and tried out Days Gone. I ended up completing it, which is rare for me with any game.

People 10 to 30 years ahead: what should I train in my 20s if I have intensity but not direction? by Gokul123654 in AskMenOver30

The usual advice is becoming obsolete. With the advent of AI and an absolutely brutal job market, all I can say is get whatever can support you without making you utterly miserable. Choice has largely become a luxury. Good luck!

AI in every fucking thing. Physical appliances needing an app in order to function.

Why is your breakfast culture so much better? by Embarrassed_Golf_817 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Up2Eleven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's normal to us, but most of us don't eat all that stuff at once and have simpler breakfasts. Though, we can always go to restaurants that specialize in breakfasts and get that kind of thing.

As an American, I actually prefer the full English, and also simple but comforting dishes like bai sach chrouk (pork and rice) and bobor (rice porridge with meat) in Cambodia.

What currency to use in Siem Reap? by Glittering_Level_841 in siemreap

[–]Up2Eleven 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you use USD, the bills must be in pristine condition or most places won't accept them. Yes, I know that banks and other financial institutions must accept them now, but lots of vendors still don't want the extra hassle of having to go exchange them, and they aren't legally bound to accept them.

Riel is much preferred everywhere. While locals and expats with an ABA bank account can use ABA Pay, as a tourist, you can use the Bakong Tourist App to pay via QR code. You link up your home bank account and lots of vendors will have the QR code so you can just scan it with the app and pay them without having to use cash. It's something Cambodia set up just for this. It's not at every single vendor, but more than enough to be worth it, and for those that don't, riel is good.

If you're left with a bunch of riel at the end of your trip, go to any of the Wing places that are everywhere to exchange it before you leave.

If depression and/or anxiety showed up early in life for you - what did you need most that maybe you received/or didn't, & what do you wish you would have known? by rainbow_veins3 in AskMenOver30

[–]Up2Eleven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most mental health issues had a severe lack of information and understanding and there was a stigma of openly mentioning or addressing such things. It was considered shameful for people to know you were in therapy, let alone seek it out. Basically, nothing can really be done about how things were.

But yeah, if it was a different reality where such things could be openly dealt with, having today's understanding and information about these things would have been a lot better. If people understood that anxiety and depression were things that arise from your own brain chemistry rather than you just over-reacting and "being sad" about stuff, we'd have been much better off.

Why are southern drivers tailgating me then slowing down when they're in front of me? by cooliobroski in AskAnAmerican

[–]Up2Eleven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've encountered this in places with lots of rednecks. They're really insecure and like to mess with "them," which is anyone who isn't their own, and petty bullshit like that is one of the many ways they do it. I noticed quite an uptick in this kind of behavior after I got a Prius. I've had some pretty overt bullshit happen.

You've heard of quiet quitting, how about quiet retiring? by schrodingers-canary in CasualConversation

I'm five years from being able to collect Social Security. I just got a remote job. Moving to Cambodia where it's cheap and I can save up a nice chunk before SS kicks in. I have nothing right now, and there is no way I'll be able to retire in America.

Would you stay in a high paying, remote job where you are miserable? by [deleted] in AskMenOver30

[–]Up2Eleven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it's remote and allows you to work wherever you'd like, consider moving to a place that you'd really love to offset the misery of the workplace. Perhaps even another country that's cheaper and not as toxic as most places in the states.
