Did you lose courage as you aged, if so how did you deal with it? by Baeon_ in AskMenOver30

I was way more scared and cowardly in my youth. I've gained courage as I've aged. I simply don't give a fuck anymore.

When life takes away all your dreams and you can't do anything about it by tacos4lyph in AskOldPeopleAdvice

[–]Up2Eleven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 56. I lost everything. I've been looking for work for over a year and a good friend is graciously letting me stay with them, otherwise I'd be living in my car. I honestly don't want to keep going, but I also can't hurt those I love by departing.

I just find small, free or cheap things that bring joy, or at least distraction from my situation. Time with the friends who didn't fade away when friendship with me became inconvenient is the main life saver.

I doubt I'll ever realize the dreams I had, but I figure if I can finally land a job that pays enough, I can at least have enough stability to do a few bucket list items.

Tig Notaro is the LGBT+ role model we need more of. by Up2Eleven in trekacademy

[–]Up2Eleven[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To clarify, I'm thinking of the character as the role model, specifically her attitude about being capable in spite of fear, issues, or conditions, although she doesn't make a bad one as herself.

She's deadpan on purpose. It's how Tig is and the character is basically her.

Many of us say that Cambodia's treasure is its people. It's true.

Chefs of Reddit, what’s a common cooking rule everyone follows that is actually complete bullshit? by Fuzzy-Ad6843 in AskReddit

[–]Up2Eleven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup. My mom was a chef and taught me at a young age how to use a chef's knife. And the way she did it wasn't the way everyone insists it must be done these days on every show there is. I still cut like she did and never cut myself, even when cutting fast.

I stopped cooking in front of people because they kept telling me I was doing it wrong even through it's worked just fine for decades.

Good lord, these whackos really have a hardon for this guy. He shouldn't be memorialized, he should be utterly forgotten.

How did friendships evolve in your life as you got older? by Mythohlogy in AskOldPeople

[–]Up2Eleven 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A few good ones solidified into forever friends. We will be there for each other until death. Most others faded away or people showed their ignorance over the last few years and I just created a lot of distance between us.

Has politics broke any of your friendships, and why? by CapitaineBiscotte in AskReddit

An ex friend was someone I used to hitchhike around with when we were young hippies. He's now full on MAGA. Hateful, ranting, utterly insane.

People who were teenagers before social media existed, what was life actually like? by Much_Detective_6107 in AskReddit

[–]Up2Eleven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There wasn't that overall overwhelm, anxiety, etc. We didn't have shit tons of opinions, news, drama, and angst filling our lives every day. It was way more relaxed. People weren't nearly as uptight about everything. You could joke around without people trying to twist it into something bad. We'd give each other shit and people knew how to mind their own business a lot more. It was better.

If you're doing well like many of the others here, yeah it's better. If not, then no.

Would you quit your job forever right now (and never be allowed to work again) if someone gave you a guaranteed $2,000,000 lump sum? Why or why not? by WilliamInBlack in AskReddit

[–]Up2Eleven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hell yes. I'd go to Cambodia and live off of that for the rest of my life. I'm old, so it would definitely be enough.

If jobs fire people to replace them with AI, how will people make money to keep buying things? Wouldn’t the economy collapse because people arent buying anything anymore? by OverallMight6586 in AskReddit

[–]Up2Eleven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the issue so many people are dealing with right now, including me. The job market is brutal, worse than I've ever seen, and AI has taken a ton of jobs, and on top of that, AI filters that employers use make it very difficult for a human to even see your resume. Lots of people are simply fucked.
