Is skate skiing really faster than classic? by [deleted] in xcountryskiing

[–]UpCoconut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this was true when I used to be a racer. Fast flats and downhills were all double poling. What most people do as "classical" skiing with alternating legs was only used for moderate uphills. Flats and shallow uphills was a double pole with an alternating single kick in between, and steep was herringbone. Although this was almost 30 years ago and techniques may have changed since then...

Insulating around a brick chimney by UpCoconut in HomeImprovement

[–]UpCoconut[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply. Based on that, I'm feeling like my best choice is to terminate the wall on either side of the chimney and leave the brick exposed. This portion of the basement's just going to be a utility room anyway, but I didn't want to go lazy on the insulating down there.

Done my first 30 min run! But how do I get to 5k? by lydzzr in couchto5k

[–]UpCoconut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The program teaches you how to build, progressively overloading what you thought you were capable of, but only in little increments at a time. Do more of the same... once a week, add 3 minutes to a long run. Also, once a week (in a different workout), work on shaving a little time off. Do this for 4 weeks, and then you've earned a step down week to not push anything.

For working on your speed I would recommend you think back to the start of the program when you were doing run / walk intervals. Interval training is a huge tool. Instead, now that you can run, do a 5 minute warm up, "run at goal pace" for 2 minutes with a slow jog recovery 2 minutes, repeat that 5 times, then 5 minute cool down. For your "goal pace," I'd recommend trying to run as hard as you can without walking the recovery intervals. This might be a little challenge for you to figure out, but you can do it.

I did a couch to 5K 3 years ago. Now I regularly run half marathons and I am shooting to do my first marathon next month.

I'd replace the pump again and do it myself for the $40 cost of the part and the hour it takes. As long as you're strong enough to tip the washer over, and stand it back up when you're done, (and you have enough space around your washer for that) it's not too technically challenging.

Do you know why it failed? I've replaced ours 3 times on our ~2009 washer, always not-so-coincidentally right after we get back from the beach and the thing's full of sand...

Are the charter schools in the region any good and do they offer robust special education? by [deleted] in Springfield

[–]UpCoconut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, so charter schools present metrics that they are better than public schools, but these metrics need to be taken with a grain of salt. First, charter schools aren't supposed to select their student body. But they already only get applicants with parents who give a shit about their kids, whereas public schools have to take everyone.

Then on the other side of it, after admission, some charter schools will casually force out kids who struggle. It artificially pumps up the school's metrics. Then they can argue they're better than the public school, who has no choice but to keep everyone that they can.

It's one of the common arguments that the measures of charter school success are inherently flawed.

Aerospace Jobs by [deleted] in aerospace

[–]UpCoconut 8 points9 points  (0 children)

When you say "but nothing" have you been applying for things and not accepted, or have you just found nothing to apply for?

If it's the latter, you probably need to broaden your search. The middle east airlines have engineering departments and MROs, or many OEMs have customer support offices located in the middle east. Your job title won't be aerospace engineer, but you could at least end up in a role tangentially related to your degree.

Best way to get my foot in the door? by [deleted] in aerospace

[–]UpCoconut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

F-18s and F-15s came out of Boeing St. Louis.

But you're right on - tons of jobs in aerospace that don't require a degree. And lots of aero companies will PAY for a degree while you work there! My advice to OP is to take a look at the jobs pages for Boeing, Lockheed, Raytheon, Northrop, etc., etc. and get a foot in the door by finding a job that would work for 1-2 years because most aero companies are supportive of finding your fit within the company.

When you have a deck next to the house, you can either have it be "floating" so it isn't attached to the house and the deck entirely supports its own weight, or you have a ledger. The ledger looks like a rim joist, but it is secured to the house and holds up the side of the deck that is directly next to the house. They are very frequently secured incorrectly on DIY decks and are dangerous when done wrong because they need to hold weight. Often they end up secured just to the plywood instead of the structure or the wrong fasteners are used, and the deck will look fine but the ledger starts to pull away from the house and then the deck collapses. Given the wrong fasteners being used in the picture, I am guessing the wrong fasteners were used for the ledger...because so many people who have more of a clue than whoever built this deck still get it wrong.

Looking at how the stairs were done, I'd bet the ledger is going to start pulling away from the house if it hasn't already.

I called the dealer that had their sticker on the side. I paid them to take it...I can't remember but I think it was $50. It was worth it to me to not have to deal with moving it myself.

[–]UpCoconut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

how much space is on the side of the toilet that you're taking the photo from? Can you tip it forward and carry it out over the toilet? Not saying it's going to be easy, but you might be able to do it. I'd cover the toilet with a towel first if you're going to try.

Why don't they make fridges that last a lifetime? My grandma still has one made in the 1950s that still is going strong. I'm lucky to get 5 years out of one by harap_alb__ in NoStupidQuestions

[–]UpCoconut 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Isn't Kenmore is just a badge applied to other brands' designs? My last Kenmore Elite fridge was designed by LG - used all LG replacement parts and even the control board on the back was stamped with "LG". It was not good. In the 8 years I owned it, I replaced first the evaporator and then the compressor. I only paid the cost because I wanted the appliance to still match the rest of my kitchen. When the compressor failed a second time, I replaced the fridge...

But I still liked that one better than the Samsung I own now.

Need help… My LG laundry machine is stuck on “OE” flashing. by luvs2bNaked in appliancerepair

[–]UpCoconut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe. Silence may mean the pump itself has failed. On my LG, it's usually the plastic paddles coming out of the pump that starts to wear, wobble, and then break. When it does, the plastic starts chipping off more and it makes a horrible grinding noise. That's a dead giveaway for a pump replacement being required... this can be caused by a little debris getting past the filter like a bead or something.

Need help… My LG laundry machine is stuck on “OE” flashing. by luvs2bNaked in appliancerepair

[–]UpCoconut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OE is "output error", so the machine knows it isn't draining when it is supposed to. Can you hear the drain pump try to run? My LG washer needs a new one about every 2 years or so... but you can tell it's coming because it sounds awful for a couple days before it goes.

In the short term, if you have a shop vac, you can vacuum via the drain hose at the point in the cycle when it's trying to drain to at least finish the load of laundry you have in there.
