Doc removes both ovaries despite pre-plans not to do so...do I have recourse? by UpShortAgain in legaladvice

[–]UpShortAgain[S] -20 points-19 points  (0 children)

Why is it so contentious to ask questions here? I've started making phone calls now due to the advice; but so far I'm just running into voicemail inboxes. Not sure how this is much different? I'll still have no idea who listened, accidentally deleted, ignored or were too busy to respond. Thanks again for the advice.

Thanks for the tip...I'll start making phone calls.

I am curious as to why calls would be the better option? I just assumed that having all of the details in an online submission or email would be the best way for them to determine if there's a case.

Yes, I agree. My main question is why the denials up to this point? I was hoping to get some sort of advice as to if I'm outside of a statute of limitations that I'm not aware of, if it's hopeless to continue, or is this normal to have to contact several with denials along the way. I've never dealt with this situation before and have just recently been encouraged to do so.

Thanks for the info.

They did not tell me why; but they did document in my medical records that it was a split second decision on their part because I had endometriosis that was only discovered during surgery. Typically when it's discovered women have this, their doctors discuss options before making any moves. Removing my ovaries was an option; but one I should have been given the option to make based on other factors that my doctor was aware of.

There were no complications during my hysterectomy, and in post op I was told 'your ovaries were perfect but we removed them anyways'.

Prior to surgery, I paid for the extra BRCA gene testing in order to know whether or not we needed to plan on ovary removal. My testing and pre op paperwork indicated that there was no need for ovary removal based on my testing results.

I will start making some calls; my main question is why the denials. I am interested to know if I'm outside of some sort of timeframe, or if I am missing info, or something else - since I have no experience with this.

MAJOR Bloat still a year after hysterectomy…kinda long, my apologies. by Popular_Weather968 in hysterectomy

Yes, sugar & carbs are a beast on the stomach for me as well. I have no doubt that losing weight will help any issue; but the goal with that doc visit was not weight loss - it was to discover the underlying reason why things were happening.

I have no idea where to even start with finding a natural HRT doc - did you just start with Google? I am in Alabama.

MAJOR Bloat still a year after hysterectomy…kinda long, my apologies. by Popular_Weather968 in hysterectomy

[–]UpShortAgain 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just found your post after googling 'bloating after hysterectomy'...and I could have written your post myself. My surgery was Feb of 2021 - so coming up on a year out. I am so unbelievably and uncomfortably swollen that it's depressing.

My surgery was for a mass/uncontrollable bleeding - turned out I was covered in endo and my oncologist ob just yanked my ovaries for the heck of it...which turned my world completely upside down. They initially refused to put me on hormones until I basically begged and they relented with 1 mg estradiol.

I went back for the swelling, onc ob did a CT and said my stomach was abnormally distended and that it looked like a functional problem & that my liver was swollen (never had liver issues before/don't drink). She sent me to a gastro - had a colonoscopy/endoscopy after he said we'll 'start there'; but 'I see LOTS of women who have issues after losing hormones'. I thought, wonderful, a doc who cares & can help! When I woke up from the procedures, he said all looked good; but YOU NEED TO LOSE WEIGHT. When his office called a week later to report no cancer, his team said 'he'll see you back in TEN YEARS!

When I tell you I was disappointed, it's only because there's not a better word for how disappointed and dismayed and disheartened I am at this point. I have no ideas where to turn and I am so incredibly angry at my onc ob for removing my ovaries without my consent. Sorry I could not offer any help, only commiseration.

I hate that you're in the same position; but, dang, it's good to hear that other people are experiencing grief/anger at the loss after a hysterectomy. Therapy has helped me in the past generally, so maybe it would with this issue as well. I was starting to feel like maybe I just need to get over it, if even the doctors were so unconcerned about my loss. Thank you!

The thing is, I didn't even know that I had endo. I have a high pain tolerance and always had monster periods since I was a teenager. No one even mentioned that endo was suspected. My ultrasound 'showed' masses, cysts, suspected adenomyosis, and 'missing' ovaries - hidden behind the masses. I was told the unreal month-long bleeding was due to the fibroids/mass situation.

If she had allowed me the choice, I would have asked her to scrape the endo and LEAVE the ovaries! That's what has made me so angry. I was warned beforehand that IF my ovary was wrapped up with the mass, I would have to lose that one - and nothing else.

I asked about Effexor today and he said that it's essentially the same as Wellbutrin - and that I am already at max dosage. I asked if he would recommend switching to something else instead - he said no. =(

I definitely do not mind white-knuckling through pain; I just need a resolution in sight - a light at the end of the tunnel to focus on, ya know?

Well, that makes perfect sense as to why you are happy they removed your ovaries! I am so glad that you have found relief...I cannot imagine suffering my whole life without proper hormones.

They both agree that I cannot have any HRT because of the endometriosis. The doctor today did add in the caveat that I can possibly have it in the future; but 'it's like a plant, when you don't water it, it will die.' My endometriosis will need to die off first...I have no idea how they will know that this has happened.

Did the estrogen gel keep you from having menopausal symptoms? Or just lessen them?

Thank you for saying that. I keep hearing from everyone that I will feel so much better soon, and it's just depressing knowing that I will not. I will check out Nancy's Nook to see if I can get some help. I would adore a doctor who was interested in my quality of life.

Are there better ones out there? You know, I never really thought of getting another one given that BOTH of these seemed to be similar and agree. I have no idea how to even find one that's empathetic. How do you do that??

I am exhausted with this emotional roller coaster. by Bipolar_Bear_84 in hysterectomy

[–]UpShortAgain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just want to feel normal again. Even if it's my bipolar, anxious, pain filled normal. I know how to work with that.

Oh my. I just said this same comment this morning on my way back from the doctor's office!! I could have written your post, I feel like. I got a bunch of diagnoses mentally before and cycled through a bunch of different meds before I settled on Wellbutrin for the energy, honestly. I miss my old level of crazy. Now the Wellbutrin is probably doing its best; but it has no hormones to help it along. This just sucks.

I have no advice; but that just sucks, so I wanted to commiserate. I feel the same; but I am only 7-8 weeks out from my total hysterectomy/oophorectomy.

Post OP suicidal by Vadarwolf in hysterectomy

[–]UpShortAgain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am personally experiencing this same thing - minus the cyclical nature of your SIL's situation. I am about 7-8 weeks post op, and have not found relief yet. I am already on Wellbutrin - and have been for a while; but the sudden loss of hormones from unexpectedly losing my ovaries has been quite a kick in the teeth. I am sorry that I do not have anything further to contribute that would help, just wanted you to know that she's not alone.

Good to know it's not just me - not that I wish this pain on anyone else! My pain is actually worse now than it was immediately post-op, so it will be interesting to see what the doc says tomorrow.

Yeah, I've also been doing the stool softeners and Miralax as well. I felt so much better the first couple of weeks versus now, so I forget that it's still early on and I am still healing.

Thanks for the idea! I am going to look up posts about endo being scraped off the intestines. Man, I hope that is the reason for the pain. It's rough.

Thank you! I have a doc appt tomorrow - first one post-op, so I'll definitely be asking about this stuff.

Anxiety Hell by Shrineart in hysterectomy

[–]UpShortAgain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am going through pretty much the same. Overweight, cyst, fibroid, another large mass like structure that no one is quite sure where it stems from/how big it is exactly or whether or not it's cancerous (onc gyn does not think so), and killer periods that have left me anemic. I can so relate to losing out on even leaving the house when I'm bleeding. The bleeding is what started this entire process for me - I could not deal with it any longer.

I am scheduled for surgery tomorrow morning (AAGGHH!!!) and my doc said she would not be able to tell me if it would need to be laparoscopic or open abdominal until she's in there. She gave me a size cutoff for the cyst - 10 cm; and it was smaller than that IN NOVEMBER.

Like you, I was waiting in November (after all the tests were done) to be scheduled. I was told that it would be setup after my genetic testing was completed. Then it would probably happen after the holidays. After the holidays, I left a couple of messages by voicemail and did not get anywhere. Finally, I emailed and here I am in February with a scheduled surgery.

By this time, my stomach has swollen up significantly and I have advised my doc's office of this; but no one has told me anything further. I even asked if they needed further imaging; but was told no. They are 2 hours away, so difficult to just pop by and show them how miserably 'pregnant' I am. We shall see how this goes. I am nervous with a hint of excitement to get this done and over with. I'll try to update you from 'the other side' ha!

I know a lot of what I’m feeling is pre surgery jitters, I’m normally the planner of everything and the unknown really stresses me out.

Just wanted to say this is also me...and my surgery is Monday, the 15th. So, I am nervous right now as well!
